    Terry Pratchett's novel 'The Last Hero' has Cohen the Barbarian and his Silver Hoard., one of which has, what can best be described as a combat wheelchair.

    Was going to mention The Silver Horde; there's also one of Pratchett's wizards who has a wheelchair (admittedly, more a victorian bathtub on wheels) that's not as famous as the silver horde, but just as good.

    You just have to root for a man who lived a lifetime in his own legend, leading a mob of angry octogenarian adventurers to overthrow an empire (and the robe-soiling wizard who accidentally roused an army of terracotta soldiers). There is a lot of Discworld in my D&D games. It's my strange little way of honoring Pratchett's memory.

    I was pretty critical of playing as disabled when the core of fantasy gaming is to be or do things without limitations imposed by real life but the idea of wheelchair bound NPCs is a fantastic idea especially if the PCs are involved in how they got that way. A good story could actually benefit from those miniatures.

  • @secretlyaskrull

    @secretlyaskrull

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@kendallemory8455 I want to have the option to play as disabled because I'm proud of who I am, and people like me deserve to see ourselves as heroes in a fantasy setting (because everyone should have the opportunity to see themselves as a hero in media). My wheelchair doesn't limit me, it enables me to move freely and speed down hills and go places I want to go. To me, the limitations imposed by real life are things like lack of accessible parking, stairs, curbs, businesses that break accessibility laws, etc. The combat wheelchair is an awesome magical item that flies up stairs, so the limitations of real life are pretty much smashed right off the bat, and that's pretty core-fantasy. Danny totally nailed it on what it means to some wheelchair users to be able to have a mini, and have rulesets that let us play as a heroic dungeon-crawling version of ourselves. These minis would certainly make cool NPCs, but they were designed to be badass adventuring party members. Also, just so you know, most wheelchair users in English-speaking countries reject the term "wheelchair bound." The phrase implies that our wheelchairs are somehow making us disabled or holding us back, when in reality they represent our freedom and mobility. They're just an extension of our body. It's more respectful to say "wheelchair user." Plenty caretakers and medical professionals still say "wheelchair bound," but I've never met a single disabled person who doesn't cringe at the term.

    I'm just shocked they stopped at the wheelchair. I want legless minis, minis with crutches, armless minis, handless minis, footless minis, arm and legless minis, minis with prosthetic limbs, hands, feet, etc. I want all kinds. It's really not the far of a stretch if we already have peg leg hook hand pirate minis. I just don't think they should be forced to be pirates because of it. Lets get everyone included in there. That seems the most fair to me.

    My obligation as a DM is to my friends at the table way more than to the game itself. Even if the rulebook said it was absolutely not possible in the game world, I go with what my friends want because they matter way more to me. It's as easy as that.

So many of my friends are wheelchair bound, and knowing they just have the option if they wanted to is awesome. I understand some ppl don't like the idea or it may break their immersion, but what about the disabled players immersion? They may noy even choose to play as one as most of D&D is escapism...but a choice will mean alot.

    Is it? I've played an elven wizard, and a female barbarian bear rider-- neither of those have anything to do with me. In a game about creating a story, I think it's important to have character that are believable. These characters would be a great option for something similar to a Harry Potter adventure, or to just paint. They do not make sense to be sold as typical Pathfinder or D&D characters, as it would be unbelievable that they would survey the average monster encounter. Just like it would be unbelievable that the 5'7" morbidly obese, Cheeto eating D&D player would survive, which is why they still play athletic adventurers. Maybe some controversy could have been avoided if the intention was different than how it read.

    Thing is, if you want to see yourself in that fantasy setting, you easily could, so branching out is easy. But for people with disabilities, or are PoC, where fantasy settings either treat you like you dont exist or that you have to fit a very narrow stereotype, it feels like its not "meant for you". Im a Black guy who grew up loving medieval aesthetic, rpgs, and table tops, but fact of the matter is that dark skin people in fantasy are treated like "woke pandering" or some nonsense unless its literally a current/former slave/criminal. I can only imagine how much worse it would be for those with physical disabilities. Why must suspension of disbelief allows for talking animals, spell slinging elves, and sentient robots infused with holy energy, but the idea of a guy or girl fighting from a wheelchair is treated like some far-fetched idea?@nstiles42

  • @merlin9863
    @merlin98633 жыл бұрын

    I 100% support this, and I'd love to see more especially from companies like Hero Forge. The fact they are still wheelchairs in a fantasy world is the most immersion breaking part to me like they could literally be floating or a mounted creature or a robot, so that you wouldn't have to work around how they actually get around in dungeons and stuff, but there are endless possibilities of how those obstacles can be overcome in a wheelchair using existing 5e mechanics and they might be interesting problem solving moments. You could entirely ignore the limitations, you could design accessible dungeons and even have it explained why it's like that based on the types of monsters that live in it, you could run your campaign in urban areas, you can punch traditional high fantasy elitists in the mouth like Griffin McElroy and put elevators in your game who cares it's your game. Not even Wizards of the Coast can tell you how to play your game because they put it in the rules that there are no fucking rules.

    I am legless and in a wheelchair and I think it's great! I've dealt with being an afterthought to "the real world" as well as dealing with doors that are too narrow. Did you know that exterior doors will fit 99% of wheelchairs but interior doors will only accommodate about 50%? It sucks when you gotta pee (find a bottle). So my next step is to figure out how to modify one of those to remove the legs. Fusion 360 will do it, but it's a lot of work.

    While a "battle wheelchairs" probably wouldn't be practical, or even usable in many combat scenarios, especially in a medieval setting, I can't help but think D&D is a game world where magic and inter-dimensional demons exist, so... get over it already. Anyway, I just can't help but think of Joe from Family Guy, particularly the early seasons. What might be more "immersive" for those who really just can't bear to have wheelchair minis would be have mobility steeds - a paraplegic hero riding a battle hog for example. D&D is about using one's imagination after all!

    Usually when people are discussing about players wanting to play a blind character. Like a blind monk. That is seen as cliche or even called edge lord and it is automatically assumed that adventuring for a blind character would be very hard if not impossible and at very least in combat they would have to act like they had blinded condition i.e. always attacking with a disadvantage. I don't see why wheelchairs are treated so much differently. In anycase you never needed any of these new homebrew rules, you could have just ruled that PC in a wheelchair works just like any other character if you wanted to hand wave it and that is what the PDF mostly is about coming up with excuses to hand wave any disadvantages a chair bound character might have.

    My little sister and I are huge DnD nerds, and I print all of our minis. She is disabled, with no functionality in her legs. I had been looking for wheelchair minis for literal years... and when these came out I immediately printed all 4, primed them up, and showed them to her as a surprise for our next session. She burst into tears. I had never seen my little sister so happy. She's playing with the Rogue next session, all painted to her liking.

    ... this is DnD, i have had people use magic to turn a landlocked desert village that had a problem with Giant Scorpions into thriving exporter of Whale Oil, Whale Meat, Gunpowder, and an extreme plethroa of fungi using only a few spells/items. Polymorph: Scorpions --> Killer Whale. Once the creature is polymorphed a trained and crack team comes in and butchers the creature alive. Since Polymorph means you can not kill the target no loss of the subject and sustainable source of Whale meat/oil. Healing Spell: The village used to be a mining town for sulfur. Once the Scorpions were moved to what amounted to holding pens (Ranches) the mine Reopened. Pigs were brought in and well, you can see how gunpowder became an export. Druid of Spores: By using some of the mined out branches and these druids in general we made fungal growth chambers and yo9u can imagine how much alchemists LOVED it. Decanter of endless water: The linchpin of half of this. By having a few of these set as both fountains AND a few later on with nozzels to act as water cutters... You can see the village has alot of water. Yeah. This was a simple thing and if i can start producing and exporting Whale Oil from the middle of the desert then there are solutions and ways around the width of a freaking door! Also wouldn't doors be wider for the larger races?

    used to have a welsh character in call of cthulhu he rolled such a bad dex that he ended up with a wheelchair. it was one of the most fun games we played imagine a group of characters breaking into a mansion and there first problem is getting a character in a wheelchair over a high wall. he saved the day though his chair was like an armory he had so many guns on it mostly shotguns and blunderbusses but we still remember the game was hilarious. having to carry him up stairs to each landing. he was a crazy character. shame we did not have characters like that. i used to always collect the strange metal figs.

    The wheel chair bound character from Alien Resurrection has got to be one of the best examples in media of a character in a wheel chair that is an integral part of their team's/party's combat capabilities. The "Do you want to check the chair?" security check point scene alone is gold. The later scene where the alarms go off and the entire party gathers around chair guy to gear up and reassemble all their guns is more than enough justification to include wheelchairs in all social encounters and most published campaigns. Let's be honest. The majority of published material for 5e is "big damn quest" style adventure paths with little to no dungeon delving, and a lot of one story buildings or one level dungeons. If you do come up to an obstacle the chair can't roll over just have the chair character mount the barbarian. Hell, if you're doing homebrew or dead set on exploring every level of dungeon of the mad mage there's one simple fix that no reasonable DM should have a problem with. Give the wheelchair character a pair of slippers of spider climbing and reflavor them as giant mechanical spider legs that attach to or replace the wheels. Make it an Artificer Infusion or whatever.

    I could see a great back story - A child, the only survivor of a raid on his wood elf village is left for dead with a broken back. but he survives. He is discovered by some acolytes and taken to a remote monastery to heal and recuperate. A local tinkerer makes him a wheelchair to get around, as there are no magical healers at the austere monastery. He studies deeply in the arcane books at his new home and discovers writings on the celestials, and learns how to use a mage hand to push himself around. One day one of the celestials notices him back with his talent for arcane magic and makes a deal with him to serve him and be empowered to get revenge. But the cost is that he will never walk again. Undeterred he l makes a pact and begins his life as a warlock, with a secret quest and revenge in his heart.

    In a couple of the Terry Pratchett Discworld novels, there's a band of really old adventurers called the Silver Horde. One of them is nearly deaf so they have to yell all the time. Hamish is in a wheelchair. This comes in handy because they can sneak their weapons into a temple under the blanket on his lap. There's also a wheelchair-bound wizard at the Unseen University. Those minis would be great for those two characters, who may just have to become NPCs in my campaign.

    I feel like, As a DM, you should not only be accepting of the fact someone wants to be empowered by their character, but openly WELCOME the challenge of making their story just as good as anyone else. I welcome that at my table and I don't know if I want to play with someone who doesn't.

    Well put Danny. It is often in the naming as we protest against the perceived limits of a category. We could re-name the class as continuously mounted characters, or just veterans? Ultimately we are talking back story as this is what forges the connection between player and character and surviving cannibalism is a lot more evoking and heroic than a car accident. Wheel chair, flying carpet, robotic walker, pants of levitation, especially if requiring a potion of flatulence to inflate, all seem pretty damn fine to me! Especially where this is consistent with the characters back story.

    character creation by mini choice is an awesome idea ! on another note in regards to the wheel chair controversy, i exclaimed this in another channel: If the physics of wheeled chairs in an inaccessible medieval style setting don't suit. simply modify to a 4 legged magic walking chair. a "spider chair". people emulate themselves and express muted desires through their PC's. playing a disabled character should be accommodated. and if a DM is to narrow minded to incorporate this, i question their imagination and skill as a DM. it can be as simple as a flavor choice, no advantage/disadvantage simply another means of basic movement.

    Thanks for bringing this to my knowledge. I really appreciate that somebody really did some minis with a handicap like this. I love all the minis and the idea behind it. Really so much I'll print all of them and integrate the characters in one of my future adventures. I for myself do not have a disability that will put me in a wheelchair, but I have friends who appreciate this very much, since they don't think that they are forced in a wheelchair but it gives them freedom.

    It's been too long for me to remember what the early edition rules said, but in the current 5E rule books it says that these rules are guidelines. The encouragement is to use them as a base from which to refine your groups house rules if and when desired. Never, and I mean not even when I played the early editions back when they were first released, did I or any of my fellow RPGers feel that there was any kind of limits to whom or how we were allowed to portray any of the races, creatures, classes or the relative attributes or feature thereto, nor any items or devices to be discovered or engineered in the game. It's a fantasy game, and fantasy has always meant that the multiverse is the limit to the imagination, which have no boundaries, as far as I know. How in the world did this even become an issue? Yes, it's awesome that somebody finally made these minis and created these awesome wheelchairs with super cool features for wider availability, but why was it ever thought to be an issue? Back in the day, when my older brother wanted something that we couldn't find in the books, be it a creature to encounter, or a wondrous item to have our party find, he made it up, and if he wanted a mini to represent it, he had me sculpt it (granted, I always had some clay on hand because I have been sculpting since I was 5yrs old), but there was never any question as to whether it was allowed to exist in the game.

    It's a nice concept and can help include some people that thought they didn't feel they could join and I'm 100% for it it's nice to see and hopefully see more of. With games you can choose to include what ever you want and if there is a DM that doesn't want to include something then that's down to them. We are in a world where pretty much anything is possible and that for me is all that matters as it help fuel our imagination and lets us be what ever we want to be.

    I'd approach him personally first to see if he'd WANT this before presenting it to him at the table in front of the other players, especially if he's the newcomer to the group. You don't want him to feel patronized or pigeon-holed by it. He might love it, or he might feel like you are telling that because he is in a wheelchair you are assuming the only character he will play is one in a wheelchair...

    I like the idea of a wheelchair-bound character. Reminds me of Bran from Game of Thrones. Playing as Bran would be a perfectly valid option. I would just have it be, you know, a disadvantage to the adventurer, as it logically would be. They can't jump, they move slower, and some terrain is harder to traverse. I would see this disadvantage as another challenge to the game, which would make it more interesting. Of course, you could just circumvent all that by saying it's a magical flying chair or something, but then it wouldn't be a wheelchair.

Side note: my last character played till lvl10 was a battlesmith goblin who actually strapped himself onto his iron defender with climbing gear, and rarely got off it unless camping.. so he barely walked himself and some evening thought he couldn't.

    One of the arguements I heard once was why would they let themselves be left in a wheelchair when healing magic can repair severed limbs replace organs it could clearly fix what ever is going on with their legs. And even if thats not the case why a wheelchair when a spider walker would have a wider range of access. But thats the stuff Ive heard and honestly its certainly something to think about.

    To be entirely honest, when I first heard about these minis, I was on the fence. At first, I was caught up in thinking it might be unrealistic for a medieval fantasy setting, as well as potentially impractical. Then I remembered: We're playing make-believe in a world of magic wonder-wizards and uber-buffed barbarians. A combat wheelchair really shouldn't be such a big deal.

    I think it really depends on the campaigns tone (which, the criticism comes regardless of that fact, so not really warranted). If you are playing a light hearted, whimsical magical fantasy game-- it works great. If you are playing a Dungeon Classic, or something like Glen Cook's Black Company, it wouldn't work.

    My problem with them is the entire therapy theme. Why would you want to be wheelchair bound? You enjoy fantasy and sci-fi so much because it’s not you and your world. Bring your real world shit into the fantasy is just ruining fantasy. Also beyond that anybody bound to a wheel chair better not have any healers in the damn party.
