3d printing actually changed me from a wargamer to a figure painter. When i first bought my printer it was to print minis to use in dnd and maybe warhammer, but I've basically transitioned to printing and painting large figurines. I never considered this side of the hobby before and now i don't do anything else.

Just a few things GW “borrowed” from in order to create their “IP” includes: •Starship Troopers by Heinlein, 1959 (this is where Space Marines, power armor, jetpacks, deep strike, drop pods, Tyranids, and much more comes from) •Tolkien (Orcs, [dark] elves, magic spells as we know them) •Dungeons and Dragons (the entirety of Warhammer Fantasy and Space Hulk were a lift-and-shift from 80s DnD systems)

The Political system of the Imperium and it’s Galaxy travelling ways are basically Dune. Sly Marbo is basically dyslexic Rambo. Necrons are Egyptian Terminators. Tyranids - Alien(s) Tyranids - Enders Game. Genestealers - Aliens (face huggers) Prevalence of Flamer weapons - Aliens. Adeptus Arbites - Robo Cop. Rogue Traders - Han Solos. The saddest thing for me is how little love Chaos gets from GW because to my knowledge they are Original IP.

  • @argbot10

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Chaos, including the 8 pointed arrow symbol, are ripped straight from Michael Moorcock. This was something that was an open secret in early editions, as the original GW team were massive fans and did not hide it. In Warhammer fantasy the Elves (both high and dark) take a lot from the Melniboneans from Moorcock. The were an isolated former empire (ulthuan) filled with amoral sadists (Naggarond) who regularly enslaved people and treated other races with scorn. In a few stories his heroes have to fight creatures warped by the chaos gods to have the heads and appendages of beasts. D&D was also heavily inspired by Moorcock. The Law-Chaos axis from their alignment table is from Moorcock, as his stories were usually about those two cosmic forces colliding. The eye and hand of Vecna are a reference to the Corum books where the hero gets infused with the eye and the hand of destroyed elder gods. Moorcock gets a mention in the wonderful Appendix E of the 5th ed PHB, so credit to D&D for making that connection more explicit and encouraging people to read some of these influences, of which Moorcock is one of many. Malus Darkblade, Drizzt, and Geralt of Rivia are homages (if we are being charitable) to Elric of Melnibone, Moorcock's most famous character. One of his other series 'Hawkmoon' has a decrepit emperor installed in a machine throne that keeps him alive. His heavily armored soldiers are all organized into legions themed around certain animals. He's not the same as the emperor of mankind but the influence is definitely there. Anyway Moorcock a great pulpy author worth reading, your favourite fantasy author almost certainly has read him already!

@@cavemansam8400 He’s different from your post Tolkien writers, if that is what you are used to (Wheel of Time, Game of Thrones etc). That’s certainly what I was exposed to for most of my life anyway. His work is probably best filed under ‘Sword and Sorcery’ and so is closer to Conan, A Princess of Mars, Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, etc. His prose is fairly lean and pacey. He doesn’t do big florid descriptions and he largely eschews what most people would call ‘world building’ today. He tells you what you need to know, but doesn’t trouble with any of the minutiae of the world his characters inhabit unless it serves the story, or tone in some more immediate way. Moorcock’s heroes inhabit worlds that are thoroughly mythic and slightly unreal. His heroes are all epic and doomed to a man, each one striving to bring balance between order and chaos. While he went for a very different approach to Tolkien, Moorcock also had a good eye for the genre conventions of epic in Greek and Norse mythology, and peppered his own work with the tropes that make these ancient myths so vibrant. Magic is big, loud and in your face. Monsters and Gods are weird and unique. Demons are summoned and spells unleashed in combat at a moments notice. Lots of action sequences with heroes wielding enchanted weapons. It won't take long to notice the influence on fantasy games like Warhammer and D&D. His books are pretty short (which is a virtue in my opinion) and for the most part come in at under 200 pages. He’s got a story to tell and he wastes no time in telling it. His most famous works were often written for fantasy magazines of the 60s and 70s so were cranked out pretty fast, but despite the odd moment here and there the books read very well today. I would recommend ‘The Knight of Swords’ the first of the Corum books, which are divided into two separate trilogies. They are all about fighting chaos and some of the imagery is very evocative of Warhammer. There is also the first Elric book ‘Elric of Melnibone’ though it serves more as an introduction, and you get a better sense of the character (and the Warhammer influence) in later books where he is more enthralled to his demonic sword Stormbringer. So you could start it later with ‘Weird of the White Wolf’ if you wanted a more representative example of the effect it had on the genre. Elric is a great moody goth anti-hero and once you read it you will spot his shadow EVERYWHERE in fantasy stories that have come out since.

after curing properly, Resin is non-toxic. But you are right with the byproducts, doesn't matter if its water-washable, the stuff you clean it with is also considered hazardous waste in most countries around the world and may not enter the drain. With alcohol, you can at least let it evaporate when it is saturated as a cleaning agent, and then just have a bit of goo to bring to the hazmat recycling place, much cheaper volume-wise (we pay by weight). Good ventilation and a controlled temperature is a must for reproducable prints. But for both we have enclosures now that work really well (with filters). Still wouldn't print stuff in a living room, but in the attic? No problem. Actually, printing ABS on a FDM printer gives off nastier fumes :D

I forgot that it was really expensive to buy stl and nearly 80-90% of them never get printed. The subscription model is that way for a reason, to make you think " wow, so many models, it's a bargain " when in the end, just wanted to print 1 or 2 of the 10+ some companies give you.

I wanna see a competition that allows any 3d printed model. My mini factory would be a great organiser for that and you could paint any model available on their platform. Without question 3d printing is our future of the hobby; the issue is we don't have anything other than one page rules as a major miniature agnostic game. I mean they've tried, we've had a few games from Vince, Titan Forge made an "ehhh" skirmish game, loot studios has their game coming out...but no major corporation seems to want to create or promote a miniature agnostic game other than maybe Frostgrave? I have millions literal millions of STL files that I find amazing but can't really find a reason for them other than OPR or proxy models for board games.

What you really mean is there are too many gatekeeper types that won't accept playing with proxies. There is no need for a rules system to be explicitly mini agnostic, the only thing that matters in most rulebooks is that the base size and shape is correct so the rules work properly.

One thing I’d love to see for 3D printing? A primer to give out so people can learn the difference between copyright, trademark, and intellectual property. Learning to 3D model is also free with software like blender and tutorials on youtube. The barrier to entry is very low. There are millions of 3D models on the internet you can download as a base and then just modify them in blender until they match what you envisioned. And you don't have to worry about topology, rigging, animation, all the complicated stuff that game devs and VFX artists have to worry about. As soon as you're done sculpting and it looks nice it's done.

My wife paints. I appreciate figures too much to torture them with my poor abilities. But it's good to see someone recognizing how many options you get from 3d printing. It wasn't until I got a resin printer - which my wife surprised me with at Christmas 16 months ago so I could print board game figures for her to paint - that I realized JUST how great the models can be. It's very difficult to print a good figure on FDM, even on my best printer. I mean, before I had resin, even that idea was amazing. I could download a free STL. Cut it and move it around in a simple cad program like Tinkercad, and print out what I wanted. But resin starts to look like injection molded stuff. And you can't personalize injecting molding. My oldest daughter and her friends play D&D regularly and I had already figured out how to scan in their heads (second life for Kinect scanner) and put them on D&D figures. But the models are SO much better with resin than I could do before. I continue to be surprised at the level of detail I get. Thanks for promoting the 3D hobby/avocation to more people.

What we're going to see is a shift from product focus to lore, IP, and system focus. You're already seeing this with the rise again of the old Specialist Games and 100% print and play games like Full Spectrum Dominance. This is the future. It's good. It's putting fun back in your hands and not in that of the... ahem, shareholders.

As to the hate, most of it is over bad rules (unbalanced, poorly written) and prices for the miniatures. GW in the 90s made fairly balanced rules and their prices were very competitive in the market. Future GW: it all depends on what the stockholders want and how the stockholders can get the best return on their investment (stocks).
