    SPOILERS: Note: Even with all the cards I covered, I managed to leave a couple off of the honorable mentions -- Blazing Shoal, which is banned in Modern, and Dreadhorde Arcanist, which is banned in Legacy. the Shoal got banned because it was too good with infect, and the Arcanist got banned because it was too good at recurring powerful cheap spells.

    Shoal is like Neoform combo. It was inconsistent and didn't do great in tournaments when it was legal. It was banned because they didn't want decks that could win on turn 1 and almost never won after turn 2.

    Heartless hidetsugu was not banned "just because they thought he was too good". He was banned because, at the time, all damage dealt by commanders counted as commander damage, so one activation of Hidetsugu could kill the whole table. He was unbanned because they changed the rules such that only combat damage dealt by commanders counted as commander damage.

    IIRC, Ali from Cairo was never banned. It was on the original restricted list in January 1994 and was unrestricted in 1996. It was "banned" in Extended, but not because of the card itself: cards from the older sets that hadn't been reprinted in a more recent set were simply not legal in the format.

    (10:53) Since Fury's banning in Modern caused its price to drop significantly, I decided to buy one for about $5 recently. I figured it would be a good inclusion in a Shadowfax deck I'm working on. (12:00) I plan to include a few blink cards like Ephemerate in the deck, so I might be able to do a "Boros scam" with it. :P (15:43) Funnily enough, now Goblin Oriflamme exists, which works exactly the same as Orcish Oriflamme, but with the Alpha version's 1R cost. (16:50) Gotta emphasize that he actually remained banned for a few years. :P

    The LSV Top 50 cube list is a bit out of date, they've added a number of busted red creatures in recent supplementary products that are tearing up the scene. Broadside bombardiers is probably the best red card in the cube now, it just deals too much damage while also acting as repeated removal on a stick, but it's too new to feature in a top 10 like this.

So it didn't get banned late it got banned before the next set got released and it was only a nerf ban because that card wasn't even maindecked.

    Fury probably wouldn't be banned if it was to a single target. The fact that it can kill up to 8 creatures/planeswalkers for the low cost of 1 mana is bonkers. Low toughness creatures are basically unplayable unless they bring equally insane value Wrenn and Six at least can only kill a single x/1 per turn

    It's more the synergy it has with the graveyard recursion card as the reason for being banned. Dealing 8 divided as you choose is pretty nuts even if it was a plain 4/4 without doublestrike. You wouldn't ban pyrokinesis for example it's just a strong card at most.

    I honestly think Wheel of Fortune, while very strong, really shouldn't get the number one slot over Underworld Breach. Wheel of Fortune works extremely well in Breach decks, and even then it's not played in Vintage Breach decks. It's a card that's only really good in Commander and even then it's not an automatic 1-of in decks that run red. Overall, large agree with the list, but the 1 and 2 spots should be swapped. Especially since Breach can even be played in fair decks. All that said, I take a very controversial stance and believe that Wheel of Fortune is stronger than Timetwister, simply because most decks that abuse wheel effects would prefer to have a stocked graveyard.

  • @dstreetz91

    @dstreetz91

    Twister I wouldn't play underworld breach in a fair deck, what is the point it's like playing maybe a restock or regrowth like effect depending on how many cards you have in the bin for it. It's no more useful in a fair deck than yawgmoth's will in a deck without fast mana.

    @@dstreetz91 I also thought Underworld Breach sounded silly played fairly, but it is played as a fair card in Modern decks, weirdly enough. It’s just an insanely stupidly good card. Commander banlist is stupid anyways. It has never made sense especially when they say "you don't HAVE to follow this list if you don't want to" it's like if the legacy banlist was optional. If someone wants to play a wish card they can discuss it with their playgroup and I'm sure it would spice up some games depending on limitations imposed since access to the entire collection is a bit much.

    @@dstreetz91 To a degree I agree for some cards there needs to be a hard fast ban no exceptions, the problem is unlike Standard, Modern,Legacy and etc there really are no recognized competitive series of events, not even with Cedh ( which is more an off shoot than a format of it's own) and is played mainly casually which makes policing games impossible and as such leaving it to individual groups to decide how strictly to follow the ban list is the only option. Mind some LGSes do impose some rules themselves.
