I was thinking it should have been used in place of the First Order dreadnaught at the start of Ep 8, they could have even had one or two in the fleet chasing the Rebels in that moronic slow speed chase, that way they could have killed everyone near the very beginning and saved the franchise from the rest of Ep 8 and all of Ep 9.

@@sschuster2180 well, you don’t even need thousands of ships. This has always been one of my pet peeves with Star Wars, is that we rarely see a battle how it would actually play out. For example in TCW we regularly see 3-5 Venators confront various sized CIS fleets, and each Venator is supposed to be able to be carry over 400 Star fighters, but you never see more than 8-12 launched at a time. It’s the same with the turbolasers of the various ships, each ship has from a dozen, to a few dozen turbolasers of various sizes, but you’ll arely if ever see more than a couple shots from any specific ship at anything close to the same time. The battle at the start of ROTS is about the only time we see anything close to what it would look like, and I understand why it’s toned down, as if battles weren’t, they would all be a giant fur all that would be tough to follow, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t give us more examples of massive waves of fighters/bombers and huge barrages of turbolasers fire!

I would love to see this in the fleet that Thrawn is building for his return in the Ashoka series, this would be really interesting to see him use it.

I really like the design, I remember when the images were released for Armada! Definitely wouldn't mind seeing this beast in action but I could see it working like a glass cannon, for sure. Keep it in the back and have it unload on capital ships or, as it's intended, let it bombard some stubborn enemy out of hiding.

I think I might have found a solution for the Xyston: The insane power requirements to fire a superlaser powerful enough to destroy a planet from a star destroyer, were so costly that it drained all other functions of the ship except for life support. This is why the Xyston completely lacked even simple necessities such as shields and navigation, with faulty electronics even leading to that when the ion cannons were fired, the turbolasers would fire instead. All of this resulted in a powerful, but extremely impractical and vulnerable ship. Obviously it's not a perfect solution, and it's still a stupid ship, but it's more of an explanation than Disney has given us

Or even the Excalibur class- fires, but everything is offline for X time while the power cycle back up.

If you want a good chuckle look at the Zysten SD scene again. Only one of the red helmet crew on the bridge is doing anything, the rest are just standing there. Which makes you wonder, if no one on the bridge is working who is moving the ship and targeting the gun?

So clearly the Oneger class Star Destroyers reminds me so much of the sniper ships found in the game Dreadnought and the Aggressor-class Destroyer from the Zann Consortium formerly an Imperial design. I must admit... that looks pretty nice. However... I would prefer upgrade the Aggressor-class Destroyer that fires charged Ion cannon shot and charged Plasma shot... to fire the actual shots from the Xyston-class Star Destroyer. Or maybe strip down the Xyston-class and formulate it/intergrate it to the creation of the Onager-class... Idk... all bets are on the table on my end.

@@fluffaduck6206 I mean they're pretty sluggish when it comes to ship to ship combat. Hence why you got the Keldabe-class Battleships as the main ship of the line for the Zann Consortium. That's why the Aggressor is in fact the first sniper ship in Star Wars in my opinion... though they can do heavy damage to ships from medium to space stations... so yeah. Of course when it comes to ground assaults, the Aggressor class Destroyer in orbit can bombard an enemy position or an entire base... in theory that is. The only downside is the black market tech self destruct that really overheats the engines/the main power cells that charge the two guns. Again... all bets are on the table

A 3D Model of the MC140 Scythe-Class Main Battle Cruiser from Legacy Era would be cool to see.

I'd love to see the Onager in live-action. Maybe with this climactic event with the Mandalorian and related shows. And I'd love to see the Arc Hammer in there somewhere too. Gotta make Dark Troopers somewhere, and remnant in the shadows needs to be mobile.

Fun fact: an onager irl was a Roman siege-breaking catapult which could destroy the walls of enemy cities, which is probably why these two share the name, which is actually Latin for ‘Wild ass’

Reminds me of the Midway.

The Onager is an "okay" ship in Star Wars Armada, I still prefer the Starhawk, the Onager is a ship that can not fly solo.

Yeah, everyone always talks about how it's "op" in the Rebellion in the Rim campaign, but whenever I see it in smaller battles it gets absolutely shredded. Starhawk is so far one of my top favorite ships in Armada, too.

Easily my favorite star destroyer design to come out of the Disney era and one of my favorites overall. Very unique yet distinctly imperial.

I like the hammerhead look and I'm a sucker for spinal mounts...

When Boba Fett mentioned that the Imperial remnant turned Mandalore 'to glass' in the final episode of season 2 of the Mandalorian, do you think perhaps Gideon's naval force could have included at least one Onager? If so I would really love to see a live-action appearance of the ship in season 3.

I WAS RIGHT! I posted a comment on the last video like this, guessing that the next ship coming up was the Onager Class Star Destroyer. All I needed to hear was that was Imperial, Canon, and that not much was known about it in order to make my guess. (unfortunately, my comment is no longer there, which is strange, because I honestly remember posting it...)

Been watching this channel for a awhile, never knew Eck’s name was Justin. When I heard it in the intro I was like “woah”

While visually signatory, splitting the bow in two leaves the ship vulnerable by increasing its target profile and decreasing hull integrity. It's not the smartest design choice to place hangar bays inside the cause of it's increased target profile.

I feel like it gets away with that issue by being a siege weapon. You send the fleet in to secure the "airspace," then the Onager comes in to hammer down the defenses, safely protected by the surrounding ships and fighters (and it's own air group, depending on how many TIEs it actually carries). Alternately, it was intended as a test bed (perhaps for some element of Death Star superlaser related tech?) rather than a production ship, and ended up somewhat pressed into the latter service (with the design modified to include additional weapon systems for defense) to clean up remnants of the Clone Wars and overly 'noisy' rebel cells (because Palpatine loves him some superweapons). Then, of course, since they already have it, swap out the weapon system on some of them to test another one (that'd end on the Mandator IV in a different form).

@@nekophhtI get that being a siege weapon means it deploys behind cover, but that also means it automatically becomes the highest priority target for a defending force. So the additional target profile makes it all the more easier for a defending force to take out their most prioritized target. The Onager's own design profile hinders it from performing its mission. The main armament of the Onager ordinarily fires solid projectiles.

I would love to see a breakdown of the Hapan Nova Class Cruiser. Such an artistic looking vessel.

Looks a lot like the Midway-class mega carrier from the Wing Commander universe. Without the giant "crotch" placed command tower since it looks like a big pair of pants.

Advanced in Star Wars doesn’t really carry much merit considering everything is normally blown up by a handful of smaller ships.

the Onager is really good looking ship. The ship seems so modular and useable in so many different roles with so many different variants of the ship, while it was built as an artillery ship; I can really see the empire taking the central artillery out and replacing that space with hangers like a gladiator class with more capacity. It would probably fit the role of a fleet carrier that way. The power conduits could even be hollowed out and replaced with hangers if the main gun was taken out and replaced with hangers.

I've got to be honest out of the three sniper star destroyer designs the Onager, Aggressor and Peltast; the Onager is definitely my least favourite mainly because of the bridge section which I think is absolutely hideous and in general I just think the other two do a better job of conveying being related to mainline star destroyers while having a unique design that is fitting for the specialist role they fill

Smarter than the Death Star

A great ship and another hit to the Tarkin Doctrine that all the Empire needed was more big scary Star Destroyers.

"Onager" means donkey and such Roman siege weapons were named onagers because they kick like donkeys on the recoil. So this ship is basically the Donkey-class Star Destroyer.

So, deploy the Onager with a few Corellian corvettes and Lancer frigates (say, 3 of each) far behind your regular battle line as a way to snipe at large enemy targets mid-battle? Might be the best way to use them in large fleet-to-fleet combat, which wouldn't have been very practical during the Rebellion. Would've been far more useful during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, since they had some downright monstrous big capital ships to hit.

I like how the Onager looks like a Crossbow if you think about it. Helps give it a Sniper/artillery ship look.

Always liked this ship, the design, name, role, are all just awesome. Reminds me of the Peltast from Legends. I really hope we can see this ship more in future media.

For my perfect fleet I had a modified Maleficent to carry one of these in the front. As well as my Dreadnoughts Viscounts able to hold one.

I have been wondering for 40 years... how the hell to people get in and out of those bridge pits?

I just watched a Onager WRECK the Starhawk MK II in 1v1 TWICE due to its range advantage, Starhawk couldn't get close on its own from the front and tried to get around from the side using an asteroid for cover but the Onager turned really quickly due to its smaller size before the Starhawk could pin it in palce with its tractor beams. Also i would think a ship like this would be perfect for Hit and Run strikes like Thrawn Used, but you could instead use it to hit vital infrastructure and bases. Jump in fire its main weapon while its protected by an escort screen and then bug out. be a great way to sow chaos and confusion.

I love the look of the Onager. Wish it would have been shown onscreen at some point.

What program do you use for the top view schematics where you discuss tactics?

I was so sad in the Rise of Skywalker when they talked about a fleet of planet destroying ships and it turned out to just be a bunch of ISDs with big guns strapped to them rather than a bunch of Onagers. Especially considering Star Wars Armada had just released the Onager a few months before, I thought it was supposed to act as foreshadowing. Especially since Armada's release of the Starhawk came out right before Squadrons and keyed in the official Starhawk design.

This is what the final order SHOULD have used.

One or two of these would work perfectly with an Interdictor Class ship. Interdictor in the middle and the 'sniper ships' on each side with 1-2 Star Destroyers or 1-2 Lancer Class anti-starfighter ships flanking.

I would argue that this setup is much better than the Mandator IV. Apart from the aesthetics (where the Onager wins effortlessly), if you're going to mount The Biggest Gun You Can, making it turreted is less than useful. It adds extra moving parts and doesn't elevate much faster than the ship would be able to turn anyway (we even see in TLJ that it only rotates vertically, which means some of your aiming will still be done with the ship in any case). You go from a smaller SD with a spinal cannon to something wildly oversized that carries basically the same gun. You could have had an Onager plus a Star Destroyer or two for way more tactical flexibility and probably more firepower overall.

If anything, THIS should have been the big threat in rise of Skywalker, maybe much bigger and the group having to destroy the design first THEN boarding and destroying it

Now we can just hope these pop up in thrawns revenge.

This wouldn't been a better pick than the Mandator-IV for TLJ; have to turret (instead of the entire ship) makes the "super cannon" feel smaller than it should. Also, from a story perspective, having the entire ship have to line up instead of yet another "powering up" countdown wouldn't make more sense. Hell, could've had the B117s going for the engines (given the weaker shields, and if it can't bring its siege cannon to bear, the fleet can escape- heck, the ship was close enough to Atmo that it couldn't been lost (see: Executor), which would've given a weak point that makes sense instead of a giant reactor that is as exposed as it was... Plus, would expose how foolish it was to target the base BEFORE the capital ships, (no ships to leave, base and its personnel/material aren't going anywhere and can be blasted at leisure).
