The Monterey Bay Aquarium Has a Secret
There was so much I wasn't able to tell you. Like, for example, most of the jellyfish on display at the aquarium are born and bred at the aquarium. They do active research on jellyfish breeding, which is a finicky thing, and every species has completely different needs. They also don't just grow the jellyfish, they have huge tanks of algae that they feed to the tiny animals that the jellyfish eat. I guess I should have known that jellyfish are predators, but I don't think I did!
Also...Mola mola are WILD! I need to make a whole video about them. JAY! IT'S A BABY WHALE!

vlogbrothers The “most” qualifier is SO TRUE; even home aquarium hobbyists have to learn about a bunch of not-so-friendly organisms. Bristle worms are a pretty gnarly example - they get 10’+ (3m+) long and can bore through rock! Seeing their interactions with all the “good guys” too, like micro-crustaceans/invertebrates, isopods, copepods, etc. It’s like collecting Pokémon IRL! It’s such an amazing hobby, as it combines chemistry, biology, ecology, and so much more. Incredible learning experience!

This aquarium was right next to where I grew up, so I went there all the time as a kid. Had no idea that it was so unique in all these special ways! This makes all my memories from there as a child that much cooler. :)
Like many locals, we tend to take this place for granted. Heck we even get to go free during the off-season. BUT thanks Hank for making me appreciate how special this place truly is!
In middle school my science teacher showed us Monterey Bay’s kelp forest web cam as an example of a biome. I returned to that site repeatedly to watch and eventually found the otter cam as well! After haggling with my parents to let my computer time coincide with the otter and kelp forest feeding times I set alarms on my watch and basically spent the entirety of my summer tuning in to watch. While I have never physically been to Monterey Bay aquarium, it holds a tender place in my heart and this video was an awesome look at it. Thank you!

I am a member at this aquarium and have been attending it since I was a small child. So I really appreciate that you gave us some perspective regarding what goes on behind the scenes as this isn't something I had ever thought of nor would have known about.
During my time as a marine biology student, I got *very* familiar with the smell of dead barnacles. It's...if you take the smell of low tide and add funky overtones of decay, you're getting there.

Accredited zoos and aquariums take such pride in the care of their animals and to see someone with a platform like yours taking the time to talk about it makes my heart happy ❤️ so glad you had a good time!
I'm from Central California, so I went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium several times growing up through school field trips and birthdays, but I definitely never appreciated it as much as I should have. The aquarium tries to fund most of this through means other than the entrance fees. The money from ticket sales is only covers a small fraction of what's spent in a year to maintain everything. Sales from the cafeteria, gift shops, and donations make up most of the rest of it.
As someone who lives in Northern California, I have gone on so many school field trips to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and it is honestly one of the most magical places on earth. This video captured its beauty and complexity really well (while also making me hella nostalgic so thank you hank)

I lived in California as a child, I still have some old photographs from when I visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium! Oooh, this made me sooo happy!
So glad you were able to discover this incredible aquarium. It's long been my favorite and much like yourself one of my favorite places on Earth. Incredible video Hank. Thank you so much for this.
About every year, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has a Free Resident week, where people who live in the area can get in for free. My favorite thing to do, is go to the Open Ocean exhibit, take a seat on the second floor benches, and just chill for a while. I’ve been in that aquarium almost every year of my life, been all up and down the both floors and both buildings, and I still manage to take at least 30 photos every time I go. Because, no matter how jaded I might be about the rest of my life, I can always find something beautiful and incredible there, something that inspires wonder and intrigue. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve grinned like an idiot watching the penguins hop around, or inadvertently let my mouth drop open while craning my neck to see the very top of that kelp forest exhibit during a feeding. I’m glad you got to experience this place, and the rest of Monterey’s ocean, and I thank you for helping me enjoy it all over again through someone else’s eyes. That poster of the depressed-looking otter makes me laugh every time, though, lmao
That Barnacle solution is elegantly genius.
I love the Monterey Bay Aquarium so much. It's beautiful, educational, and genuinely one of the key factors that has created my love of nature and the sea. Also, their social media pages (instagram) are FIRE! This video has definitely helped me to better appreciate how much it takes to make such a magical place work.

I love that you're geeking out about their water supply systems. I'm a theatre nerd, and when I went on a tour of the Burgtheater in Vienna I was predictably geeky about the very cool stage tech they have (revolve + lift = amazing scene changes, and even bigger than the drum revolve at the National Theatre in London where I worked) but what surprised me was how much I geeked out about their air conditioning system. I love when something sparks your curiosity and you're able to marvel at it, even if it perhaps falls outside of the realm of your interests or passions.

Can we pause to have an open and honest discussion about the pros/cons of aquariums in general? I understand that many aquariums do great work in educating the public about the importance of marine preservation, and serve to inspire youth in particular. However, even aquariums of far higher quality than most are motivated by profit at the end of the day. I do not believe they always have the best interest of the animals in mind, as evidenced by the fact that the Monterey Bay Aquarium has kept and led to the death of at least one great white shark in the past - kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4GWqq5_j93dmtY.html
@herranton

Millions, if not billions of dogs have died in captivity. Same with cats. Recently, my shrimp tank crashed and all five shrimp died. GW sharks are notoriously difficult to keep in captivity. The MB aquarium kept one alive the longest. GW sharks are on the decline. Yes, it is due to humans, but not the MB aquarium. If we want these creatures to survive long term, it might be important that we keep know how to them in tanks. The world isn't perfect. Maybe it should be, but it isn't. If you want to complain about that, then do so. But there is no discussion about keeping endagered things to be had. We NEED figure it out. The people running/working at the aquarium share your concerns and are infinitely more knowledgeable than you about them. The fact that it is for profit just means there is more money. I wouldn't doubt that the for profit salt water aquarium industry has done more yo advance the understanding of reefs than the entire scientific community. Why? Sheer size. And once your car's exhausted, your hot water showers and your power to run the device you are on now cause the oceans to warm and the reefs to die, you will still be able to enjoy them at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
