Very cool video and a truly amazing vehicle! I’m guessing there are people in Jackson or Aspen (or someplace similar) who would own one and actually use it to its full capabilities. Honestly, even if you have a budget of $350K for vehicles, you’re much more likely to own a few and your off-roader would be just a slice of that budget. The person who buys one and actually uses it off-road probably has a vehicle budget in the millions. That’s a remarkably small slice of the world. Very cool to get the opportunity to see this thing in the wild, knowing I will never, ever, get to own one. I suspect MB would only trust a very few journalists as they have you, Roman. Well-deserved and I’m glad you so obviously enjoyed this chance and let us all join in vicariously.

In-hub gear reduction axles is what the original (split window) VW bus used to increase ground clearance and gain a torque advantage to keep the 36 HP motor usable as the rated weight capacity of those early vans was over 1500 lbs. Granted those original designs were Swing Axles rather than true independent suspension like on the Mercedes.

A BadAss Ride, Roman! One of my buddies has owned two late model G's, but I could never get him to take either of them off road to any extent at my place in northern Michigan. We always drove off road in my modified/lifted Jeep GC WK2 EcoDiesel 4x4 w/ lockers (which performed flawlessly!).

  • @zefram47
    @zefram47 Жыл бұрын

If you use the full bag of tricks (lockers, etc) and then get stuck, you don’t have any tricks left to get unstuck. Not to mention using lockers around turns is a good way to break things if you have a lot of grip. I’ll use low range all the time off-road, but save the traction aids for when they’re needed. Anyway, very cool to see the mighty G actually used off-road and not being challenged at all!

  • @einfelder8262

I have an off-roading mate just like you. Every time we go we have to recover him, because he won't use his locker till he's stuck, and then he just buries himself deeper. You won't break anything using a rear or centre locker. If you get stuck even when using all your aids, you do have a trick left - those travelling with you will recover you. If you get stuck not using your aids, you confirm to your mates that you're a d*ckhead, and eventually your mates will go without you.

@@einfelder8262 yeah, but not everyone has buddies. I don't. I don't have a car either, but let's just pretend I drive an Offroad Pro package X164 GL 320 CDI. That's my dream car, the most beautiful car IN HISTORY, and also a decent offroader. If I get stuck using just low range, it probably means I cought a diagonal, and one simple push of a button will help. If I lost traction in slippery snow or mud - again, there's a high chance that I can at least back up and choose another line without even getting out of a car. If rear locker doesn't work, well, I don't have a front locker, it's not a G-Klasse, but at least shoveling wouldn't take too long. If I use everything, like center and rear diff locks, max level suspension, and get stuck - that means I'M STUCK! Here in Ru... doesn't matter where we have that smart and very accurate saying: "the more bad*ss the rig, the farther you go for a tractor". When you can't rely on buddies, you really wanna get stuck early and, maybe, reconsider continuing the route... before it's too late.

Good vid! There’s good books on off-road methods including the mechanical why. As an off-roader or overlander, you want to avoid breakage and getting stranded. Using lockers inappropriately can increase your risk of breakage so you need to take that into account. I doubt this would break the G, but it’s something to think about, especially since fins doesn’t need lockers in that vehicle. On Fins, a better method if you truly wanted to use the lockers is to lock for the obstacles and unlock in between. However Fins can be done with simply low range and without lockers for most vehicles.

Saw the old G Squared in person once. It was used on the Lexus and Land Rover lot here in town. Don't remember exactly but it had less than 20,000 miles on it and they were asking more than $225,000. It looked like a grown man could sit upright underneath it the thing had so much clearance. Mercedes knows their audience though which is why this thing has the 22" wheels a chrome side exhaust tips. At more than 300K it is easily the most capable off roader that not a person who can afford it even used (unless they're a crazy Saudi prince) will ever even do as much as Roman did.

Roman being the boss. Filming, talking and driving a difficult trail all at same time and without a spotter. For those that are unaware, I'm not mocking Roman. Many high level auto journalists have mentioned how much more difficult it is to drive hard and talk at the same time. Usually they talk less and less the closer they get to the limit. That said I was a bit worried Roman would forget to put the G-wagon into park each time he got out to retrieve a camera.

Now let's see if you can get a Lamborghini LM002 to Moab! I'll go with you for that trip. I think the Jeep 392 Extreme Recon would be close to the class of that G-Wagon. However those axles with drop gears in the hubs are the holy grail to achieving ground clearance, especially ground clearance under the center differential section. Most areas of Moab you don't need lockers, just when you get onto the serious trails where you need to be able to pull over uneven obstacles with all wheels at the limit. If you can keep all of the tires planted then lockers don't help.

I do have my eye on the “plain” Jane version though. I have yet to hear from current owners of the current model G wagon of any such negative comments. The service manager and guys working on them that I have spoken with about my possible order, have nothing to gain by hiding any negatives. What I am hearing, they are very solid: Now if you have $350K you don’t need, then buy this one.

Wheel wise it looks like you could go down to a 18-19" depending on the size of the calipers. You would also need to lose the side exhausts and tuck them up and out of the rear end. Put on 37" Mickey Thompson Baja Boss ATs on it and get better rock rails. The rear bump also reduces clearance. Just move it up to where the faux bumper is currently. But yeah $360K means most will wipe it with a cloth diaper and use to get potting soil at the Depot.

Amazing vehicle. I can only imagine what I could build from a basic wrangler or Bronco with 350k. Of course it wouldn't have the "look at me factor" which is the point of the G wagon.

Off road wise I wonder about those exhaust pipes vs rock.

They would last five minutes on a tough trail. You need rock sliders, not side pipes. Same thing for the wheels, they're just too big.

MBRP does make high clearance catback exhaust system for the AMG G63, it completely solves the problem. But seriously who in their right mind buys such a pricey SUV for modifications.

Great video Roman! I love those G wagons! If they made one affordable,Jeep would have some competition. But for now I’ll stick with my cheapish Jeep.

I drove up to Big Bear last weekend to snowboard during a snowstorm and I saw 6 4matic G Wagons slammed against the guard rail / stuck. Im pretty sure its driver error and the inability to control a Bi Turbo V8 on ice/snow. Oh and all BMW X Drives were stuck! 4matic system is great on the snow but you need to know how to drive.

You should buy your Hero, then get some 17 - 20 inch rims with more off-road worthy tires! Then go back to MOAB for the tough stuff. Thanks for the content stay safe. :)

This is a very impressive machine. I guess money can buy you just about any thing. This MB is something else with its ground clearance & ( price ). When i look at Lite Bright channel, see what they do with there 392 rubicon ROCK Crawling, which jeeps are used for as well as camping, i wonder how it wood compare to Jeeps & other makes in real rock crawling.I really wouldn't want anyone to do that, but kudos to Roman for doing this all by himself, & where it showed the amazing ground clearance was very impressive. But, there was no really challenging rock climbing
