Regarding the planet, I agree that we are destroying it by needlessly and selfishly emitting approximately 40 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year and are reaping the destructive results in the form of horrific climate change. Want the v8 get a 4th generation (03-09) 4runner (same engine is used in tundra, land cruiser, Lexus GX460/470, and sequoia) or a Lexus GX 460/470 If you want more luxury than a 4runner. Just as capable off-road. Landcruiser is better overall though. World's strongest frame and comes with all the lockers, like the G wagon does. But they're expensive though. So out of the 3, for the money, the 4runner is the best. Most versatile, and most capable in multiple categories. Not just focused on one thing only.

It includes higher profile BFG All Terrain tyres, smaller wheels (with a nice off-roady design), and more underbody protection. I think the reason most G-Wagens come with those all season tyres is, like you said, almost none of their owners will ever take them off road. For 4wd vehicles, only toyotas and nissans made in Japan can travel in the Australian outback without falling apart. Jeep and Land Rovers compete for last place but surprisingly the G wagon also shake apart on the corrugations. However, Mercedes and many other types of trucks handle the roads pretty well with some daily maintenance. I have ordered toyota prados straight from the dealer with BF Goodrich tyres, you just have to think about your purchase. If you plan to play on sand frequently however stick with the factory standard 'soft roader' A/T tyres. Also,any slightly serious 4w driver would be adjusting tyre pressure to suit the conditions.

  • @roungsmate

    @roungsmate

    5 жыл бұрын

    @rabblerouser After a few hundred kilometres of corrugated dirt roads, mine work or rocky deserts the bolts, welds, screws etc on jeeps, land rovers etc just come apart. Also many of the suspension components are not robust enough and break when placed under strain on river crossings. Toyota test all of their vehicles in Australia to be able to handle this punishment. Toyota has chosen a different position on the trade offs between cost, weight savings and strength. American toyotas are cheaper than elsewhere so it is possible that they are constructed with inferior components. In the US you don't need to drive thousands of kilometres on rough roads in temperatures up to 50 degrees celsius (122 degrees fahrenheit). Even on highways fuel may only be available every 300 kilometres or so and we have cattle stations bigger than many of your states. Australia has plenty of mountains near the coast but they have been worn down from being taller than the himalayas to not much more than 3,000 metres. More than 90% of the population lives in 0.22% of the country. Aftermarket high powered turbo and super charged wranglers with modified suspensions do well on sand dunes but generally they have to stick to bitchumen to survive.

    @@withintheglass2170 No, they test them as they got them from the dealer. If they had ordered the cars themselves from the factory, they would have some options on tires as well as all the other stuff that brought the price up to a 140k. Someone else had configured the cars, and the G-wagon was clearly meant for dry roads in this configuration. Personally I think it's a crime to put those tires on a G-Wagon, but there seems to be no actual laws on the matter :) Now the Jeep may well be a better off road car than the the others here, but this test only proves that you need the right tires for the conditions you drive in. That said, I have only driven older G-wagons in military configurations, and they seemed unstoppable, so I have no real base for comparison.

    I agree to a point. I have a set of GT Altimax r43 all season for my Rav4 and they are better in the snow than Hankook dedicated winter tire. And even with max performance summer tires I can still drive in snow. Just dont want to but yes there is a big difference. I just dont understand how those Nitos were so bad.

Colorado is amazing state! My opinion about this test. Obviously, it isn't off-road test. Maybe it's light off-road. But in Russian off-road really harder. Anyway, thank you for this test! Why no score for suspension travel or articulation? Seems far more important than something like air suspension (that has never been successful in any off road competition I'm aware of when competing with springs - linear long travel springs seem to always provide better performance than highly progressive air springs). Also it would be worth having some scoring based on shocks - bypass vs non, and shock cooling capacity. One other pretty important factor for off road is the tire sidewall height. If you can't air down - you can't really do much off road travel.

    @@hesher866 I don't even consider tires a modification if they are on the stock wheels. Anyone off-roading is going to put some kind of AT tires on the vehicle. To test the actual vehicle performance, they should all have the same tires. The major negative for the G-class are those huge wheels. Frankly, I'd rather have 15 inch wheels on any of them. More rubber is always better.
