@mauricemzwinila8041Ill tell you something Maurice those Jamaican's were far more dependable and great to be around, I worked with five on the railways when I started in 1973, I was eighteen years old and cocky but they beat that cockiness out of me with the friendship they shared with me. I'm 69 now and remember them fondly, they are one of the reasons I'd love to do it all again. Unfortunately some have now passed but I still see one of them now and again and he's in his 90s, and he can still show me a few moves in the dancing department 😁, great friends from a great era.

Psalms 137:1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. Psalms 137:3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. Psalms 137:4 How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land? Psalms 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

I discovered the original only some years ago as well. And I remember the Saturday afternoon back in 1978 when I heard this for the first time like it is yesterday. I was totally smashed that day. The next week I waited for the top-40 on the radio to grab in on my (reel-to-reel) tape deck. I was surprised it was copied/covered/stolen (cross out what does not apply) from this original. But then again, the original did not become that popular and Frank Farian arranged a version which did and is still played on the radio today. Because the Boney M arrangement is simply more appealing than the original. That is not a lie, that is a more gifted artist. By the way, I was living in the Caribbean at that time and heard a lot of regional music. This original -while a great composition in itself- did just not make the hit.

It has something to do with Christianity as well. But also Buddhism. “Let the words of our mouth and the meditations of our heart be acceptable in Thy sight from now on.“ This is a prayer to the Lord of the Bible. But It could also easily be a request of the Great Spirit of many native peoples beliefs. In fact, look how similar this is and yet presages quite closely the meaning of what will become famously known as “The First Agreement” from Don Miguel Ruiz book, THE FOUR AGREEMENTS. “Be Impeccable With Your Word” which, according to the book, is THE most important agreement to learn. “Let the words of our mouth and the meditations of our heart be acceptable in thy sight from now on”

@@bm_locks the song was for the first time recorded by The Melodiens with using 2 psalms as basic. Because the song was older than 30 years are there no people who have the owner rights. And probably are they even unknown. But for sure didn't The Melodiens wrote the lyrics themselves. So the producer of Boney M. thought he could do the same but his version was too much based on The Melodiens version. So the producer had to add 2 members of The Melodiens for the song too and not only his name. The Melodiens released their Rivers of Babylon in Boney M.'s hit time, summer 1978, but it failed,no succes and only a little in 1969/1970. But they became sleepy rich by Boney M. who sold 20.000.000 copies of Rivers of Babylon. And also the song on their third album and many compilation albums.

The Melodiens were the first ones who killed 2 traddition Bible Psalms into an own song. They ended the tradditional status of it. Boney M. had finally to add the writers of The Melodiens too for their version. It was too much based on their version. Not on only the psalms.

Lyrics: By the rivers of Babylon Where he sat down And there he wept When he remembered Zion But the wicked carried us away in captivity Required from us a song How can we sing King Alpha song in a strange land? 'Cause the wicked carried us away in captivity Required from us a song How can we sing King Alpha song in a strange land? Sing it out loud Sing a song of freedom, sister Sing a song of freedom, brother We gotta sing and shout it We gotta jump and shout it Shout the song of freedom now So let the words of our mouth And the meditation of our heart Be acceptable in Thy sight, oh Far I So let the words of our mouth And the meditation of our heart Be acceptable in Thy sight, oh Far I Sing it again! We've got to sing it together We've got to shout it together By the rivers of Babylon Where we sat down And there we wept When we remembered Zion Oh, the wicked carried us away in captivity Required from us a song How can we sing King Alpha's song in a strange land? 'Cause the wicked carried us away in captivity Required from us a song How can we sing King Alpha's song in a strange land? Sing it, sing it, sing it We've got to sing it, brother We've got to sing it, sister

At eight pm tonight let's not be silent. Let out your soul, your grief, your joy, your pain, the song in your heart. And if that is in silent meditation let your silence roar and be the voice of millions. If you wish not to be silent then at exactly eight pm tonight play this song as quietly or as loudly as you may, and silent or not we shall have a moment of reflection never to be forgot. Rise brothers and sisters Rise, and shine.
