Marvelous movie! This is one of those interesting films which can be seen from many different perspectives too.. One watching it, could see a fantasy-world adventure tale (with faeries n all) and delight in the unfolding of the story; Another one could see a pedagogic tale (with goblins, dog-knights n all) for kids, where the heroine and her companions inspire all the virtues needed to overcome the challenges they meet along their way to the goblin castle. And yet another (with some exposure to psychology) could see watching it, a symbolic representation of most of the archetypal/mental situations someone will face in their life. See each character of the movie as a symbol for the various "parts" of the human psyche (i.e.Toby being the inocence of the soul; Sarah being the dweler of each one's heart; the goblin king be the dominating/ negative aspect of the human mind; and each of the characters in the tale be aspects of the human personality, be mental and personality traits) note the trirteen hour clock (lunar/female number instead of sun's twelve) and how, entering the maze (i.e. any event/life itself) we may get exited and in a hurry, start running, missing the important details.. and how gradually we learn more and more; note how every time Sarah thinks "ah this is easy" and gets complacent, she gets in trouble (so do we) note how one can measure "what is fair" as a mental/arbitrary decision How she must overcome the swamp (inner swamp we all have), then break the crystal boubble of mental illusion (with all the masked mental archetypes) and right after that tear down the walls of material illusion/ attachement/comfort ; and ultimately (in escher's stairs) jump over the perception of illusion altoghether in order to face the goblin king at the center of the labirynth (consecutive effort to overcome the illusions of life) to reclame the child (innocence) of the House (the Human) That third/ adult watch can be most fascinating, recognizing in each scene some part of personality. Cherry on the pie are the intriguing architecture aeshtetics and the various styles of masonry found in this wonderful Jim Henson tale!

Synthesizes insanity more clearly than any other psychotic thriller out there.
