I could see it as a young girl infatuation for a pop star, so naive and foolish. But at the end the young girl knows she has to grow, to be resposible, to forget about the charming prince and to fight for her endangered little brother.

I've never seen a more gorgeous costume than Jennifer's in this scene. The jewels in her hair are just ethereal. All of the costumes are beautiful and so inventive and fantastical. The 80's were such a no-holds-barred decade for fantasy filmmaking! Labryinth, The Dark Crystal, Legend, The Neverending Story. I don't think we'll ever see their like again.

@alyssapinon9670

Funnily enough it does resemble a wedding dress. I like upcycling clothes so friends mom gave me her poofy sleeved wedding dress from the 80’s which had a permanent stain on the skirt. Fortunately I was able to salvage the bodice and am thinking of turning it into a top. And now that I rewatch the movie it does look like a tamer version of Sarah’s dress so when I get it done I might have to do a labyrinth photo shoot
My heart utterly melts whenever this enchanting scene begins… Just a single massive sigh from the furthermost depths of my being… A dose of pure breathtaking magic for a lover's soul. I miss him… Miss the sound of his voice and how I could drift away into it. Am planning to reenact this scene, the entire masquerade ball this year for Halloween with the help of many creative friends, like something from a dream and myself as the Goblin King. Music to melt too… Two different colored eyes… And someone, unknowing who that someone will be just yet as it’s said to be a surprise, that I will sing this very song too. Sigh… Just magic it will be…

@@Murkoph good comment, but there is a point. Falling in love for real and not just the usual crush means you will enter into real maturity because you’ll do things for the other and not just self. Sarah doesn’t even know herself yet, a very important component to real love, but through this encounter she learns quite a bit, especially when she chooses not to join the party, don a mask. It’s Gareth that actually has fallen in love with her-or is he even capable of love, we wonder? She reminds him of what he left behind, obviously with reckless abandon. He wants her to do the same. If she does, she will turn into one of them (goblins, or what we see here, dressed up goblins) and her power over him (and her power in self control) will be nil. She’ll be just another goblin whose affections ( like the one seen at 1:25) will be rejected for whatever else is his new whim and fancy. What’s possibly romantic about this is whether or not Gareth could be saved by her innocence/goodness/purity/power. It’s his intrigue, but it’s NOT his to take and he has no power over her if she refuses to succumb to his seductions, promises of meaningless pleasures. That’s his lesson. As goblin king, is he capable of changing and more so what could he possibly do now to deserve it? They are opposed. There is tension because her power creates almost a vacuum and a glimmer of hope for him, which in turn creates a glimmer of hope within her that this is real love. It’s basically her own reflection or we wonder, is there something truly real about this- even if it seems like nothing at all? In a bittersweet way, she does what she does as an act of love, but more so for self, not him..but the side effect of her self love/preservation is actual love for him also.
SARAH: Did you say Hello? WORM: No, I said Allo but that's close enough

Jareth and Sara are the only ones without masks.
@danielpujol8266
6 ай бұрын
He does have a mask. The very first time we see him here - then he lowers it, we see his face for a second, then he disappears.
The bone mask that was stalking her made me think he was the real Jareth, or the goblin side of him, watching to see if Sarah falls for his enchantment. At 0:16, 1:36, and 2:30 he's keeping his eyes on Sarah (even while dancing!) Then he's predatorily circling her at 2:38. Finally, when we get that closeup of him at 2:46 there's a notable warning chord, followed up with another ominous chord when it switches back to Jareth. The editing could imply that she was figuring out the bone mask and the man she's dancing with are the same person, and she's trapped in an illusion wasting precious time. Plus that mask kinda looks like an owl skull? Anyone else agree? XD

I've always wondered who that guy was meant to be, especially as he is seen circling her at 2:38. Obviously that was filmed for a reason. I think things may have been cut from this scene (possibly for timing or they just didn't work) and that shot is one of the remnants. I always thought all the people in this scene were just Jareth's goblins fooling around as they did in "Dance Magic" and other songs, but in her highly drugged state Sarah sees them as humans with grotesque masks at a fancy ball. They are possibly goblins who were previously humans and the one who is "stalking" Sarah could be a future version of what will become of Toby.

You are right, because if people payed close enough attention to what they say, Jareth explains at the end about how he dropped everything and was so "generous" to her. I mean it might not seem very generous in our eyes however he is stuck there with the Goblins so imagine being lonely in the Labyrinth with basically only Goblins who accept you. He did not know any better and his love for sara is portrayed so well by David Bowie. in this particular scene, the masks are showing how cruel people can be as adults and how cruel the world can be. The reason why Jareth only holds the mask to his face at times is because he is trying to protect himself from getting hurt or rejected by Sara. For the majority of the scene Jareth and Sara do not wear masks to represent how real their love for each other is. At the end of the film you learn that it's not all about her saving her brother but that it's also about her wishing her life away so soon and being prepared for all of the responsibilities in life that you have as an adult.

@@elliefitzgerald9207 I absolutely love your explanation to this. It makes me pay attention to this scene in a very different way. Yeah - but all bubbles have to burst sooner or later. And that's only one of the clever metaphors going on in this whole sequence.
My favorite scenes 😍🥰 0:30 the mask reveal *heart clutch* 0:50-0:58- the fact that he only chasing his eyes after her even when he’s dancing with another girl, even ignoring a few 1:16-that wicked grin😈 1:56- that god-like pose 2:22- especially when he was singing to her 😍 And my favorite line in the song he sings to her: *i’ll be there for you... as the world falls doooown, we’re falling...as the world we’re falling too, falling in love* Thats like saying if “judgment day” has come (if her world or majority his world is ending ) he’ll be there for her Even when she rejects him... he’ll be there for her Kinda like that 80s song one of my personal favorites(“every breath you take” by the police...even tho its kinda a chiller😬..in the lyrics) (I have Another theory) What if the second verse 0:51- “A such a fool heart, beating so fast, in search of new dreams, a love that could last, within your heart... was referring to himself expressing his new dreams, his sudden new feelings that he dont know to formally address for sarah Because ..aside from him being a pompous irrational hostile king He know what passion love is..its just been awhile he’ve felt it for someone...and experiencing the feeling again Delivers an sudden change of emotions (“a fool heart beating so fast”) corresponds with his irrational behavior which makes him act as a conflicted teenage girl with mood swings and insecurities and these mood swing corresponds that he’ll do anything in his power to get her to only choose him (over toby... to elaborate in jareth language, “forget the child and be with me” ) The irrational side of him gave her the peach that put her in dream land and a trance...separating her from her friends and forgetting the mission ; the opposing romantic side is blowing her bubble dreams towards her at the window top(if anyone remember that scene) Teleporting her to the ball Dancing and singing to her 2:57 it kinda look like he was proposing/claiming her in a group “faerie ring” while they circling around them Anyways “I’ll be there for you” touches my heart the most because its like he saying whenever you are sad or alone or in pain...or in despair(hopeless) He’ll be there for her ...no matter what Even if the world is falling apart (Or ending, as if they in a apocalypse, he will be there for her ) And it seems like jareth is mostly expressive through songs Which makes him a poetic renaissance fae ♥️ Sure he was irrational in the beginning but feelings But love.. can make you irrational.🥴🤷🏽♀️ and it can be a twist with your persona Years of being alone (especially with goblins) probably cause him to be more impatient and easily annoyed And he’s a king ..he’s probably use to getting what he want and was taught that giving ppl things is a way to impress or get ppl attentions or affections But he also has a soft side ...as we witness here and he probably learn to express his feeling through poetry 😭im looking too deep into it but im just expressing my theory

Gods this scene is so beautiful.
She definitely was a kid out of her depth in this scene. You ever been in a social situation you felt you were out of your depth?? Sarah was getting a crash course of the adult world surrounding her and it's written on her face. Adolescents see things in black and white. It's the age between a children and adult children. Definitely one of the best movies of all time when I was a kid. Now that I'm an adult child myself you understand the movie's subtleties and overtness
The scene has so much meaning for a kid's film. Beautiful.
I have tears of happiness every time I listen to this song his voice, him, everything about it is just so mesmerizing and amazing I wish I had met him.❤️
Fun fact - the woman you see on the left who laughs when the snake pops out of the box is Jim Hensons daughter Cheryl, who not only worked on the movie with him but was also the inspiration for Sarah's character (eg being into theatre, being kind of dramatic etc)
Jennifer Connelly was truly perfect for this movie. She was tall, slender, and could easily look anywhere between 15 and 20 honestly. An innocent, girlish quality but also graceful and mature. Such spot-on casting.

That was so beautiful in every way,;I could watch this scene over and over again! Jennifer Connelly's hair, the ballroom, the music, all of it was gorgeous!
Can't believe David Bowie was 39 when he did this movie, he looks amazing :)
It’s so romantic and tragic and beautiful all at the same time.

He's just the most attractive man in the world honestly. I get why she saves her brother but dear God the amount of self control you have to have to say no to that man is just otherworldly
