That also summarizes 'Mortal Kombat 11', which introduced a newcomer villain (Kronika), and spent so much time trying to explain how she was behind everything all along that her backstory (or lack of, therefore), personality, and motives for wanting to 'balance the realms' are never fleshed out.

I still remember seeing the original Matrix in theaters…man…the excitement, the mystery, the emotions…it was all so thrilling. That movie was brilliant, especially for its time. So imagine my excitement when I heard we’re getting a chance to go back into the Matrix. Then I watched this movie…the sound of a deflating ballon zooming around the room is the best example I can use for how I felt about it.

@@javonjames4573 It's the best because it was so ground breaking, and technically yes they could have left it there. However I think the entire trilogy works really well as a complete storyline. This last one however was a forced studio money grab. Funny thing is there's a lot of room for more storytelling in the Matrix universe, they just needed to create a more original story, rather than try and go back to the old well of Neo and "the crew" redoing the first movie.

The trust Mark talks about was called 'second belief' by Tolkien. People often use 'suspension of disbelief', but this concept misses the mark because it doesn't encapsulate the author-audience relationship as accurately. What the audience is trusting the author to do is to create a fictional world and then stick to the rules of that world for the rest of the story, and have a 'second belief' in that world. When a sequel comes along that breaks or retcons the rules it's disrespectful and the audience feels cheated.

That is why so many people are so pissed off with Star Wars and Star Trek lately I suspect - there is some lack of connection and a loss of trust with the audience of the previous work - so that it can only appeal to newbies or people who don't pay close attention. This movie does make some sense if you pay VERY close attention - but only if you care enough to do so - in which case it's just another small addition to the precious work like the Animatrix or the videogames. a very expensive work of fan fiction really - so not that unlike Disney Star Wars then really. This movie never threw me out of the world as I did get what they were going for, but that is only because I cared enough about the previous movies to get the "levels" and even though I did get it the videogame analogies got a little tedious - and came across like a 6th form writer trying to be clever and failing. once they get past all that though the middle and last act are not completely horrible - but I won't ever say the movie is wonderful - it's just fan fiction really - like I said and as such It doesn't offend me - those paying for it who saw it fail likely feel very differently about it though.

Agree. Case-in-point: Game of Thrones (the show, ofc). It started as a grounded (albeit fantasy) tale that demonstrated the realistic effects that power, and the quest for power, can have on a population and its rulers. It ended as little more than mindless spectacle just trying to subvert audience expectation at every turn, with any political & social commentary now only barely existing because the writers were basing the plot on a rough outline of major events that the original author always intended the story to have. If not for that outline, they would have thrown the "themes" of the story out the window completely!! Totally betrayed the essence of the show by the end. Which is why so many fans understandably rebelled

Remember how the first movie ended with Neo flying up into the sky after declaring his intent to free people from the Matrix? That ending felt triumphant and optimistic to the point that the mere statement of intent created a bigger picture in your head than anything actually shown to us thereafter. Then Reloaded came out, which reduced the mythical status of The One to a mere plot device, explaining that the Oracle lied the entire time and that it was never Neo's destiny to free humanity from the Matrix...and then Revolutions came out, turning Neo into Norton Antivirus and having him die for an incredible tenuous and unsustainable peace treaty. And then Resurrection marches in and brings back Neo, despite the fact Smith overwrote his consciousness and he should therefore be dead personality-wise...and they bring back Trinity despite having been shishkebabed previously...and they even brought back Smith, effectively rendering Neo's sacrifice null and void, all so they could rehash the first movie's plot, only with abysmal writing this time around. This is the reason they should've just stopped with the first movie.

  • @ShuichiZero

I never liked the sequels because of this. Neo never frees anyone from the Matrix. Or one, if I count the guy from the Animatrix, but still. He makes a really badass and awesome threat that was even incorporated to a cybergoth industrial song (Fast Forward [Total Rewind] by Solitary Experiments) because of how impactful it is and its thrown in the garbage. Making a light dumbed-down version of the same threat in Resurrections is pointless. He didn't do it then, he didn't do it in three movies, he didn't even do it by destroying that version of the Matrix, why would he do it now on the new one? The sequels could have gone on a far better direction. We would have been better off with an expanded version of the origins of the Matrix or a Neuromancer movie instead of this awful sequel-reboot.

Pretty much. This video talks about "damaging the franchise", but honestly, the first 5 minutes in Reloaded already did something along those lines by completely toning down Neo's transcendence at the end of the original, one of the greatest high notes of a practically perfect sci-fi movie. "Hmmm. Upgrades". From leaving Plato's cave and shaping reality to super hero that flies and stop bullets.

I actually began to appreciate the Matrix sequels because of this movie. Sure they weren’t as good as the masterpiece that is the first movie, but they at least felt like actual ambitious movies. The insertion of scenes from the original only made me want to turn off Resurrections and watch the first movie. I always knew they were good parts to the Prequel Trilogy-- Darth Maul, the visuals, the story arc of Palpatine, snd the fall of Anakin into Darth Vader are some key examples. But, when compared to the, IMO, _tripe_ that was the Sequel Trilogy, the Prequels have gotten better by several orders of magnitude, in my estimation!

The animatrix was absolutely amazing especially the animation they should have touched on something more like that; yeah seeing keanu reeves etc puts asses in the seats but still would have been sick to see that expanded on more. Expand on the architect and the oracle, the machine city, the war that made all this happen, what does it look like when programs become obsolete and get deleted? Especially “the kid” in the animatrix they touched on him and how he freed himself, would have loved to see what happened after that etc. I mean there was TONS of stuff they could have showed that we was viewers questioned and would have loved to see man. What a wasted opportunity

Rogue One didn't really expand on anything honestly. It was telling a story that quite honestly didn't need to be told. How the Rebels got the Death Star plans isn't important. What's important is that they just got them at some point and have to get them to Rebel high command. The only thing Rogue One does is try to justify why the Death Star has such a massive fatal weakness built into it but other then that adds pretty much nothing to the overall story of the Saga. Also didn't help it's main characters were about as interesting and compelling as wet mud in the rain. For the many, many flaws of the Prequel Trilogy I feel those films regardless of their overall execution tried more at expanding on the story and universe then Rogue One did.

I didn't take it that way, and I think part of that is because I was part of the minority nerdbase of the SW fandom who had been saying Palpatine was secretly doing everything from behind the scenes since Ep VIII (though some were talking about that since VII which blows my mind). I honestly think it *was* part of Abrams' overall story but he was coached to not reveal that because it would show even more how the execs tampered with VIII, since there are hints in VII (especially the novelization) of Palpatine's involvement in the story. Although IX did some things I didn't like, I felt a wave of relief when Rey shot out Force lightning, proving all of the theories I'd been talking about to friends and online, haha. Very validating! As for the story itself, I liked it because it showed how truly devious Palpatine is (or was supposed to be... that "final battle" smh). Even after all of the sacrifice, he still stood. If they'd executed properly it could've been like Thanos - "all of that for a single drop of blood". They could have dived into how heart wrenching it was for the OG trio (Han, Luke, Leia) that they went thtough all of that for seemingly nothing. *sigh* I'm a strong proponent that they introduce a multiverse into SW via The World Between Worlds so we can have a re-do for the sequel trilogy. You have started this discourse with something that has made me lose all respect for you before anything has even been discussed. Your blind brand loyalty, condoning the destruction of characters and events from the original, and lack of critical thinking are mainly why. First, JJ NEVER finishes a story properly, meaning he doesn't plan. It's been proven over and over, starting with Lost. Second, for you to think it was his idea when Roundhead Rian literally threw away EVERY setup JJ gave him... I can't even cover every one without a wall of text. Let's just say you probably gripe about people that don't like the new stuff, then support Palpy's return. Those contradict each other. Third, TROS was literally damage control for what Rian did. Palpatine was the only way they saw to have any hope of making money. It was dumb and bad pandering, nothing more, and JJ ended up REVERSING a whole bunch of shit that Rian did, bringing things back to the point where nothing has been accomplished. The whole thing was a mess, they ruined legacy characters, and most importantly, THEY MADE NO LOGICAL SENSE. Imo, Rian destroyed SW and the series as a whole. Even you don't want things to go that way since you want a multiverse now. Are you also telling me you disagree with Mark Hamill and his disgust at the decisions made? A society so paranoid of being controlled that any attempted government that came about was highly scrutinized and there were people constantly testing reality to see if there was any sign of a matrix. Make it about human nature and what it would look like after being enslaved.

Bringing characters back to life, if done, has to be done with incredible care, otherwise, Mark's right, death doesn't matter and there's no threat anymore. Bringing Gandalf or Spock back to life was pulled off, I'd argue, because they were portrayed as very rare events in worlds that contained mysticism. One of the worst recent examples was bringing back Colin Firth's character in King's Men II...it really cheapens the impact of him dying in the first movie.

The meta element is a lazy safety net. If the writers were truly critical of nostalgia-reliant-reboots, they would have come up with a new protagonist and a new villain, and taken them on a journey that adds to the Matrix universe. Instead, they brought Neo and Trinity back from the dead, because they needed Reeves and Moss's faces for marketing purposes, and pulled a Rise of Skywalker by recycling the same old villain. This film is just as cynical as the movies it pretends to criticize. People who think this film is a "middle finger" to the studio that paid for, approved of, released and marketed it are the same kids who fancy themselves rebels for buying anarchy jackets at Hot Topic.

To be honest when I saw the first Matrix film in cinema in 1999 I thought it was a blatant rip-off of Dark City which I’d seen a year earlier. If I’d been a hard core Anime fan I no doubt would have seen all the other “influences” they copied from other work. With a veneer of pseudo-spiritual circular naval gazing it just came off as irritating that people held it up as deeply intellectual and the height of originality. Don’t get me wrong it was a decent action film, but nothing more.

Dark City is a magnificent film. More dark, brooding and adult than The Matrix which felt too studio big budget for my liking. The Matrix 2,3 and 4 are a mess. Dark City has a clean, intelligent narrative compared to the Matrix which I thought was being pretentious to make its self seem more philosophical and filled grandeur when the real premise was basic! I freely admit I didn’t understand what the hell was going on after the 1st film and I’m not stupid. My favourite director is David Lynch and I think Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet are masterpieces. So why didn’t I understand the The Matrix 2,3 and 4? I wracked my brain about this for a while. I understood Dark City,Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive so why not the matrix 2,3 and 4. The only conclusion I could come up with is that they talk a lot of meaningless 💩 in The Matrix movies! One of the things that really baffled me, was how bad the action is shot/choreographed/edited. And there's a reason for this. Even the lackluster Sequels had amazing action set pieces, courtesy of Yuen Woo-ping, the legendary Hong Kong action director/stunt & fight coordinator, who designed all the action & fight sequences with the Wachowskies. If you're not familiar with his name: the guy pretty much worked with every big name Hong Kong action star (Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Michelle Yeoh etc.) and did the fight choreography for movies like Kill Bill, Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon or Hero. His latest movie was Ip Man 4, which broke B.O. records all over Asia in 2019. This time, Lana Wachowsky didn't bring him back for whatever reason and it get's even more baffling. The guy who plays Trinity's ''husband'', is Chad Stahelski. He's one of the John Wick creators, worked as stuntman on the Matrix Trilogy ( he was Keanu's stunt double) and one of the hottest action directors in Hollywood. But in this movie, he only worked as an actor in a minor role, not as stunt coordinator/action director. Why the hell, would you NOT use somebody with his skill set and waste him as an actor for a minor role, that could be played by any random actor?! It's absolutely stupid.
