The New Matrix Was Bad On Purpose

Комедия

Is The Matrix Resurrections a cashgrab sequel that shouldn't have been made? Or is it a misunderstood masterpiece? In this video I'll try to find the truth, and explain my theory on why The Matrix Resurrections was bad on purpose.

    I don't know. I still think they were set out making a serious movie, and went overboard with all the self-jokes and meta points. Besides the above is "just a theory". Another strong theory is that the Wichowski's have lost the plot themselves. Anyone changing their gender identity must be undergoing big mental changes, and there is a certainty that it affects your thinking (ie Creativity, Decision Making, Consistency, etc etc).

    So, the studio wants to remake your hit movie from the 90s with or without you. What do you do? A) Turn down the job and let someone else ruin your legacy. B) Accept the job and ruin your own legacy to spite the studio and the audience. C) Accept the job and make a great movie, if you still have the chops. They didn't choose Option C because they didn't have the talent anymore. The Waschowski brothers were a one-hit-wonder. They made one great movie, two lukewarm sequels, chopped their dicks off and then disappeared into the sad world of Hollywood has-beens.

    The theory makes perfect sense. In fact when Steven Spielberg made ET he immediately wrote a sequel. It was so awful that it was scrapped right away. It eventually came out that this was done on purpose because Spielbergs contract called for a sequel idea. He did not want this movie to be made so he purposely wrote such a bad story that no producer would green light the idea.

    What shocks me the most about Matrix 4 is that the WB execs didn't see this flaming pile of garbage coming from a mile away. The whole film is Lana giving WB the middle finger and (rightfully) killing off any potential reboot of the franchise, but over the months and years that it was in production, they continued to fund it and somehow didn't know that it was going to turn out so awful???

    Capitalism is always willing to make money off media calling out capitalism for being evil. This is just a variant of that. They don't care whether it's good or bad, just whether they can get people to watch something off the (still very strong) brand recognition. That's it.

  • @daniellegales

    @daniellegales

    Ай бұрын

    It makes much more sense when you realise that studio execs do not care at all if their movies are good. I recall an anecdote about Alien 3, where David Fincher was at his wits end trying to convince the studio execs that the changes that they were insisting on would hurt the film, and they responded that they didn't care. They didn't give a shit that they were hurting the fim, because a good film is never their goal, only a profitable one. Great films bomb all the time, and terrible ones routinely make bank. I imagine Warner Bros thought that the brand recognition and attached talent would be enough for this film.

    I think the conflicting view comes from the conflict of what the movie really is. Those expecting a serious sequel to the series are gonna be massively disappointed. But when you realize it's a giant FU to the studio who wanted them to bring back all the characters for a cash grab it's brilliant, as it's just enough to make stupid studio executives think it will be good because it checks off all the boxes and they have no sense of taste so they green light it.

    I absolutely hate it when brands these days try that whole "We're self aware and able to poke fun at ourselves too just like you guys do! Aren't we super relatable and hilarious now!? Who would have expected us, WB, to make a film where we totally make fun of ourselves! Aren't we so hip and 2024 now?"... No... When it comes to brands that whole self aware / self deprecating style of humor is never funny nor relatable, and it simply doesn't work for consumer brands like it works for comedians and individuals making fun of themselves. I literally want my time back and thank God I didn't end up having to pay a dime to watch this dumpster fire. If you must make a 5th Matrix film... and we all pray that you don't... We'd rather the franchise end finally and age like a fine wine and not like milk... But if you must make a 5th entry, please at least do a more serious prequel that follows the story of one of the 5 previous "ones" who came before Neo like the architect mentioned. Either try that or maybe a prequel that shows the beginning of the human/machine war as it's just breaking out with mankind using nukes and scorching the skies etc. Don't use Keanu any longer at this point, please just make a prequel (NOT a reboot!) which follows the storyline of one of the previous "anomalies" or "Neos".

    It was a dogshit movie that I could write essays on. For starters it's fucking criminal that it didn't get a Premium Large Format release, nevermind the fact that matrix 4 wasn't in 4d. The budget? Omfg where did it go??? Last I checked it had double the budget of Titanic. The core principles and ideology? Completely abandoned. There was one singular cool moment in the movie and it was the reveal of Io/new Zion. Apart from that it legit felt like a made for TV remake in the same vein as the Rush Hour TV show. I believe it was bad on purpose, but not to stick it to the studio. It was bad on purpose to shit on all the people who loved the movie, to spite the fans - because the creators hate the fact that their best work was something they stole. Its crazy the movie was so bad it made me question everything, which lead me to find out the wachowskis were sued and lost in court over IP theft. The Matrix was heaaaavily lifted from The Invisibles.

    You have to know Bhuddishm, Numerology and the basics of Zoroastrian dualism to say you even watched matrix Resurrections. A genius level event so alienating to its audience it won’t be seen as a masterpiece that it is for years to come. Absolutely loved matrix resurrections. I got no qualms with it whatsoever. As the worlds biggest matrix fan I have watched the original 78 times (yes I counted) it changed my life, it forced me to question my own reality and it made me love movies as my favourite personal interest. This movie is so sincere and exquisite in writing, subtext, allegories, performances etc. I love it for what it is. Any matrix film requires the viewer to upgrade their mindset and to watch it with clarity and vigilance. This film is no different. Like the original it gave me that feeling of reawakening. Rediscovering something for the first time like love or reuniting with an old friend. The film is a beautiful experience and one of the best sci-fi love stories ever committed to film. The visual storytelling on display here is excellent. The biggest irony for me is that the original changed the game, it’s influence on technology, media, culture, etc,it was a critical and commercial success. The pedigree of the original is unparalleled. What’s interesting is that over twenty years later the next instalment is ridiculed, panned, dismissed as nothing more then a sleazy cheap cash grab right? Everyone who didn’t like the film are all saying the exact same thing. Financially the film flopped too. If there’s one thing I know about this franchise is that every film was made with precision, meticulously crafted, it’s no accident or mistake that resurrections is considered a flop. That was the whole point! However if you take the red pill, adjust your mindset and rewatch this film again, you’ll see how deep rabbit

    We're getting to the point where creators are being forced to continue their beloved franchises against their will either from the producers or the fans. The whole story of Dark Soul 3 was Miyazaki saying "this franchise is 100% out of ideas, we need to move on!" and so was Phantom Pain for Hideo Kojima. Marvel keeps pumping out bullshit and the main actors are sick of it. Don't even get me started on starwars.

    I agree, as far as the corporate greed part goes, it's an interesting "meta" take on it. How many movies are poking fun at the very studio that's responsible for its creation? Plus, although I'm a huge Matrix fan, I felt like the series started jumping the shark midway through Reloaded. The series was already getting bogged down in commercial appeal, actiony "rule of cool" more than intrigue. The Animatrix had fresher ideas than anything in the last half of the trilogy. The Wachowskis were clearly running out of steam by the end. The franchise was already getting "milked" by that point. And Matrix 4 came out at a time when we'd already had so many half-hearted reboots and remakes.

    I was an extra on set of the gym, during the gym bits in the pitch meeting, and I'm back there behind Keanu. Oddly enough, that part of the scene was actually filmed in a real San Francisco gym, that they obviously had to have paid a lot to rent out for the day. Don't think they even changed the layout of the aerobic machines, just made sure we were in exercise clothes, covered my arm tattoo with a crappy hoodie from wardrobe, and shot a bunch of takes. One whole scenario we did clearly hit the cutting room floor, and it was the later stuff that made it in. ANYWAY, you totally reminded me of that with your Lana and Hugo call bit. During the first 20 to 30 minutes of this movie I was mesmerized completely convinced it was a *prequel* to the original trilogy. I imagined the matrix was unintentionally created by Neo as a consequence of the AI he created for the games. I imagined Neo uploaded his consciousness to the matrix and that he, as the creator, had admin / world building privileges. I imagined he created the allies and the villains in this world taking people from his own life (including Trinity). I imagined the matrix had to stop Neo for some reason but it couldn't take any of his privileges, so it made him forget everything instead. And I imagined Morpheus was the first consciousness to emerge from this AI and that he would start a friendship with Neo that would lead to the never ending loop that eventually brought us to the original trilogy. It was an amazing movie in my head for a little while. Until it wasn't.

    I was thinking that before I even reached the theater. I knew that both Wachowski's hated the idea of a new sequel as the story is complete, and the "Warner Bros is making this with or without you" line was in the trailer, so it was obvious that this movie was made out of spite. • @LucidSim

    @LucidSim

    Bugs indeed sports a tattoo that serves as a visual homage to Bugs Bunny, the iconic cartoon character. This choice is deeply intentional, reflecting both her namesake and the spirit of her character. Bugs Bunny is known for his cleverness, wit, and ability to outsmart his adversaries, traits that Bugs in the film embodies as she navigates the complex realities of the Matrix. Additionally, the reference to Bugs Bunny plays into the larger tradition within the Matrix franchise of using names and symbols that carry deeper meanings and connections to cultural touchstones. Her character, much like her animated counterpart, is resourceful, rebellious, and plays a critical role in challenging the status quo within the Matrix, making the tattoo a fitting symbol of her identity and role within the narrative

    One important piece of context for understanding this movie: Lana Wachowski has explicitly stated she knew going in everyone would be comparing this to the original film and demanding it be just like it to play on nostalgia. They purposefully did not try to create the same kind of scenes or action concepts. This is why the opening in the modal recreation of The Matrix opening duplicates it with actors meant to create dissonance - so it didn't feel right with everyone looking slightly wrong, such as Trinity. It was a big message that trying to duplicate The Matrix would never work. I don't think the movie is trying to actually be a "bad film" on purpose. It has a lot of emotional meaning for Lana, because its story was inspired by the Wachowski's parents passing away. She did not wish to make a mockery of her parents' deaths. Rather, it is a movie about why the corporate media industry is bad for human beings and how it tries to manipulate their feelings and self-image. It's a serious thesis - it's not just a big joke or a troll. If the movie makes a mistake, it is in trying to include the mid-point action scene vs the Merovingian goons. It was a poorly executed scene that didn't do anything for the film. The movie would have been better as a think piece that moved almost entirely away from action - the "zombie attack" finale would have been good enough as a disaster-style pursuit scene. So for myself I can see how one might view it as bad on purpose; but I think what the movie is doing is a little more subtle than that. It ABSOLUTELY is a prank on Warner Bros. The Matrix franchise exploitation plot in the first half makes that obvious. But it is meant to be a legitimate film in other ways, not just a joke.

    The whole thing about the original Matrix being a video game was to deceive the characters themselves. Wiping their memories completely would have only set off a whole another Rebellion inevitably. But whipping some memories and leaving False memories of around the truth along with a different identity helps keep them where the Matrix wants them. Still being drained any used by robots in the real world

    I moooooostly agree with this. Yes it was made in such a way that it shut the door for more movies. Yes it's clear that no one involved was at all invested in making a good action movie. But I would add: -There's even more meta commentary than you've identified. Like, Bugs very directly represents the company Warner Bros. She dives into far off lands to resurrect Neo, and when she brings him back, everyone just asks why she bothered. His friends are happy to see him kinda, but the world is getting on fine without him. Even the world that the story takes place in wonders why this is a story that needs to be told. I'd say that very little in this movie was written without purpose or thought, at least in the first half. -That whole chunk after Neo is out of the Matrix but before he goes back in for Trinity is straight exposition for a world that does not matter for the conflict Neo is confronting. It always felt to me like it was hinting at a continuing Matrix world so that if anyone did want to make a comic book, or a TV show, or a video game, here are things you can do that evolve the relationship between humans and machines instead of just retreading the same conflict from the original trilogy. It's been two years and no one's tried, which I think is a shame. Ultimately I think it rules that Lana took $190 million of Warner Bros's money to make a hideously self indulgent film that does not seem to care one bit if it's liked or even makes sense, so long as it could provide some catharsis for the people involved in its creation. Incredibly interesting and captivating. Dogshit action. 11/10

    I don't really think it's a theory. Emplemon did a video on this exact thing a while back and drew comparisons to Freddy Got Fingered which was a movie that did the exact same thing. Ultimately the studio was going to push a new Matrix movie regardless so the original director(s) just elected to make a movie so bad that the studio wouldn't wager on future sequels. The "Leave my baby alone" gesture of film directors.
