The Martian Spacesuit Project Lives!
Ғылым және технология
It's finally time to resume work on The Martian spacesuit costume build! In the two years since we last checked in on the project, Frank Ippolito has moved into a new shop and has been chipping away on 3D printing crucial parts to the costume. Adam spends the day at Frank's shop to survey the pieces and start work on the helmet!
Shot and edited by Joey Fameli
Thanks to Frank and his team for keeping this project alive in the midst of their busy shop schedule! Check out more of Thingergy's projects at www.thingergyinc.com/

I think about this build every six months or so and come back to check. Cant wait for this to come around. Such an intricate suit and a serious feat, not sure if anything on this show has taken this long to complete.

cycoholic- spoiler alert .... that’s part of what I’ve been up to this past year.
Alot of people roast Norm because be asks questions and seems to not know what's going on but that's a weak criticism because his role is to ask questions for the viewers even if he knows the answer so people aren't left in the dark

+1. It actually behooves Norm to be (or act) genuinely uninformed, because it makes the specialists naturally want to explain their work in an accessible way, rather than being a bunch of unintelligible insider jargon speak (to the wider audience). In fact, getting this video-friendly communication out of a specialist can be difficult (my manager has to do this to me on occasion), and Norm makes it look like a natural talent, intentional or not. This is especially obvious when he works with Frank, IMO. You can frequently see Frank stop to rethink his words and phrasing, or come up with analogies, when he starts to go full geek and realizes he's talking to Norm, and not one of his shopmates. Here's to Norm, putting in the work and taking the knocks for us Normies.

Yep, I'm sure Norm knows 50 times as much as he acts like he does, and he does a good job of paraphrasing into mundane English.

sure, but a 19 minute video where most of it is talk, feels a bit overdone. I feel I saw nearly nothing of the build. I mean I didn't even see Adam milling the aluminium.

I think Norm is very likable. In this video though he asks about the support material in the 3D print right after Frank already explained it to Adam. That question from Norm should have been cut from the video IMHO, but it hardly took away from the joy of seeing people fabricate. I could watch people making props all damn day. I love fabrication.
Just got my Savage shirt and it is so soft! Love it and finally a Martian suit update! ❤️
Frank is my favorite tested member, apart from Adam of course.
Asking again one year from now. Where is the suit?!
Snapping all that support off looks highly satisfying.
omg I thought this was dead. Awesome work guys!
This video makes me so happy I could cry. The Martian is my favorite movie of all time, not exaggerating, and Adam Savage is basically my engineering hero. It makes me so happy to see my hero so invested and excited by what excites me as well. I can't wait to see the final product.
100% worth the wait . Looking forward to the next update immensely . Great job guys , everyone involved 👏👏👏

Brilliant, and love how excited they are for this build :) I could watch Adam & Frank making all day long and I'm learning so much!
Wow, it really has been three years! So glad to see an update on this!
HOLY SHIT!! What a Shop!!
I can't over emphasise how happy I am to have watch Frank's business take off, initially on Tested and then via Twitter. I really feel like I've had the privilege to watch a titan of the industry be born and follow them as they've exploded onto the scene. Give it a year or two, and Frank's props will be the ones everyone is trying copy, inspiring a whole new generation of makers and re-energising the existing one. I take my hat of you sir, it is extremely well deserved!
The original Martian suit build intro was what brought me to Tested, thank god it’s back!
I just love seeing these guys work! It's amazing how enthusiastic they are about what they do and how good they are at it - really cool! And seeing more of that Martian space suit is really wonderful! Can't wait to see more at some point :-D Thanks for sharing this!

I just started printing my helmet for my Mandalorian Mercs kit and I have had some ghosting and other artifacts show in my prints which has made me nervous about how my helmet will turn out after filling and sanding, but seeing that Franks prints have the same issues and still turn out as well as they do gives me so much hope.

That is so cool. That waste plastic can be recycled by the company that manufactures the raw extrusion. They regrind and add a percentage to a batch. You can work out a deal with them. Just keep it seperated by color and material. It saves them on cost and less landfill. win win.
@BallisticTech
5 жыл бұрын
From my understanding talking to a lot of filament companies at Mid-West Rep Rap Festival, East Coast Rep Rap Festival and Maker Faires, most don't produce recycled filament. Those that do it's more of a niche thing right now. Filamentive for example sources their plastic from "Material generated by households or by commercial, industrial and institutional facilities in their role as end-users of the product which can no longer be used for its intended purpose. This includes returns of material from the distribution chain." I think I've heard of a few companies that accept waste filament for recycling but it's the exception to the rule. Let me know if you know of any specific companies that do offer it.

FINALLY!!! Totally worth the wait for such an insane build!
It's so nice to see Frank again!
Frank has such an amazing shop. everything is great quality and is allowing for some really huge projects, super excited to see more work coming out of that shop.
Even if its a rare sight to behold now, i love to see Frank back in the videos. Hope to see more great things from the both of you together on the future. Wish you both the best in whatever your up to nowadays.
OMG did you see what just happened at 16:58 !!!! For an OCD like Adam if someone just walked up to my work space and rearranged it for no reason I’d lose it - I’d love to have seen Adams reaction lol.
Thank you!!! So excited to see the progress.
Totally been waiting for this. Thank you!

Adam, Norm and The Martian? Ugh. Perfect. 😍
This is stunning, when orange hits that helmet wow
Frank!!! It is always good to see him on the channel.
Wow! I didn't think that we'd ever see this again...
Oh my goodness I have literally waited YEARS for this! AHHHHH!!!
So i was driving trough germany 5 minutes ago and I litteraly stopped and swiyched seats with my friend so I can watch this!!!
WHY DIS I EVER LEAVE THIS CHANNEL I LOVE THIS
YAY!!!!!! It's FRANK!!!!!!! I wish he'd upload to his own channel, miss his videos. (wish I could work for him and learn from him) Fun fact, all the cameras that were on those suits in the movie were sourced from the actual action camera market. There's 2 Sony Action Cameras on the sides of the helmet and a GoPro on the shoulder boom. No clue why you'd need 3 forward facing cameras but that's what they did.
9:03 Woah, those helmets have major ghosting/ringing artifacts in them. You guys should tune your 3d printers, or even better, have a 3d printer tech that makes sure you get the best prints to save time and money doing post processing.
Norm taking a dremel to a print that good... Oh lawd have mercy
Such a cool space suite they developed for The Martian.
Please can we have an update soon , I’d rather we didn’t have to wait another 3 years !!!!!
IT'S ALIIIIIIIIIIVE! That helmet print is absolutely beautiful.
Finally updated
Adams definitely going to want his cooling vest under this one. Have appropriate measures been taken?

Please tell us this project isn’t canceled
It's been 2+ years since this video! Are there any new ones coming? I'm not on many social media platforms, has it been mentioned elsewhere? Hopefully the project hasn't been abandoned.
FINALLY!!!! Been waiting for this.
I have been waiting for this for so loooong
10:22 Did anyone else question the decision of letting Norm loose with a rotary tool on the helmet that took 70 hours to print?......don't get me wrong,I love the guy and all but sheeesh......I've seen what he's capable of with an airbrush.
Did some digging and the material and applicator for polyurea is stupid expensive and highly specialized. Too good to be true...
