Adam Savage Builds a Hero's Engine Sweet Cream Pourer!
Ғылым және технология
Adam decided to make an aeolipile -- or Hero's engine -- powered by liquid nitrogen as part of a video for Starbucks. The idea was that the engine would drive a pulley system that would pour sweet cream into Adam's glass of Nitro Cold Brew. His build, however, was not without complication. Here's how it turned out.

I got a feeling the reason that you had to spin it is that the container was cooling down so much that the liquid nitrogen was no longer boiling, and when you made the Hero's engine spin, it was pushing the liquid up into the warmer parts of the engine where it boiled off rapidly. If you added a small heater or something to the bottom I imagine your engine would work just fine!
@robertgoff6479

Actually, the spinning brought the liquid up to the outlet ports which got enough reaction mass to the jets to produce thrust. Believe it or not, there's not as much energy in boiling N2 as there is in boiling H2O.

Handling liquid nitrogen without safety goggles or gloves makes me wince. Don't you dare hurt Mr Savage, Liquid Nitrogen!
@RobertBarton86

Most professionals who work with liquid nitrogen recommend not wearing gloves. It is actually safe to pour liquid nitrogen directly on your skin, because the Leidenfrost effect prevents the liquid from effectively transferring heat. In retrospect, gloves can soak up the liquid nitrogen and hold it against your skin, causing severe cold burns. Goggles may have been a good choice though.

Should have used an archimedes's screw directly attached to the hero's engine to lift the cream out of a container and slowly drizzle it into the cold brew. A particularly long Archimedes screw enclosed in glass with the a spout and the hero's engine spinning with smoke on top would have been nice. This was good to, but it would be nice to have the hero's engine more closely related to the act it is supposed to be a part of.

It looks like it had to be spinning fast enough for the centrifugal forces to cause liquid nitrogen to rise up to the circumference of the sphere, so that the liquid would enter the nozzles, before significant thrust was developed.

@@timbr33 my thought too... Some % of the steel sphere surface had to be in contact with liquid nitrogen in order to transfer enough heat to generate enough gas... I walked into a Starbucks and saw the picture on the wall, looked exactly like fresh poured Guiness, love Guinness so much, have to try this coffee out, thx Adam, you rock brother...
I think it was due to the Leidenfrost effect that it took some time to speed up. When you started the wall was too hot and it got isolated by this effect.

Great concept Adam, glad to see you got your result. The nitrogen just sitting in the engine, could not absorb enough heat through the sphere's surface to produce enough gas. When you spun it up, the liquid, due to centrifugal force, moved up the walls of the sphere Now covering a larger surface and being thinner in layer of fluid, it was able to absorb the needed amount of heat an generate the gas. The spinning would also ventilate the outside of the sphere so it would keep relatively "warm". Pouring a jug of warm water over the sphere may have got it going without having to manually start it.
This is why I love Adam. Such nonsense thing and yet he has enthusiasm and it ends up being just amazing and fun.

I was always taught not to wear gloves when working with LN2 because that waythe leydenfrost effect protects your skin from actual contact with the fluid. Wearing the wrong kind of gloves might do more harm than good if the LN2 soaks into them and you get prolonged ski contact. Then again, there are special globes designed for the handling of cryogenic fluids, he could habe worn those, but they are expensive and really only important if you start to get into substances which have a higher boiling point and don't simply evaporate on contact with an ambient-temperatured object. Acetone is a perfect Example for this
