My late wife passed from cancer at age fifty-five in January 2019 after a three year fight. In May 2019 my daughter invited me to a music festival in the Santa Cruz mountains, as I hadn’t been to any live music since her passing. Was reluctant to go, but went at the last minute and the Main Squeeze was playing, didn’t know anything about them, but by the time they were done, I and my daughter had been blown away. That day their music cleansed my soul and I felt alive again. Saw them twice after that and always stunning. Fast forward to this video, and my wife’s favorite artist and song by John Mayer was gravity. During her fight she had tattooed on her shoulder “keep me were the light is, as her motto to beat her cancer, sadly it did not happen. I have watched too many Main Squeeze videos to count since then, and when I saw this video pop up, I had to watch it. As always truly stunning and was loving it. When Corey started to sing “keep me were the light is, and the way he and the others sang it I lost it, as those were my wife’s words of hope during her struggle. Rest In Peace my beautiful Julie, our time together was a beautiful journey. You are missed, but know you are at peace. Thank you Main Squeeze, the whole song by all was wonderful, you touched my soul.

Some of the covers they’ve done dont do well with that softer voice. The Rage song is a good example.

I feel like after this we have to start having a serious discussion about Max and his place among the all time great guitarists. Seriously absolutely blows me away every time.

I've seen a lot of squeeze and honestly, i've thought the same thing. i try and go back and forth and talk myself out of putting him as an all time great, because he's just one part of such musical excellence that are for some mystifying reason not one of the most known bands of this calibre, but i mean...the solos and overall commitment to the songs is so apparent, his phrasing and touch and tone are truly just....all time great. he's for real. max is up there, man

I don't even usually like electric guitar shredding but Max is seriously challenging the boundaries of what I listen to because of his skill - his technique and musicality is mesmerising. Each member of the band is very talented and I'm very glad a friend from church recommended these boys.

It's like, because Squeeze aren't a huge mainstream band, and they have this amazing sort of cult following, that maybe I'm missing something, and maybe there is something that the greats have that he doesn't, but the more of the videos that drop, the more I think the rest of the world is just absolutely sleeping on it. I'm hearing double stops, Mayer rakes and Gilmour bends, the guy has increased his arsenal of techniques and really should be getting the recognition he deserves. If Derek Trucks can get his name on those top lists, so can Max.

All I can say is that these guys have "it." I don't know their backstory, don't need to. What I know is that everything vibes. The rhythm section is so seamless and in the pocket which allows every individual part to express maximum soul. I've not heard a single piece by these guys that doesn't rock in it's own personal way. Love it!

These guys used to play at The Bluebird in Bloomington, Indiana on Wednesday nights with $0.15 beers on top. Fifteen cents. These guys have worked for a decade to get where they are, honing their craft all the while.

Before, like, 70s, 80s , 90s, good ones were the famous ones, but nowadays it's not. I think it's from 00s.

John Mayer would probably come over and sit in on this with them. I would LOVE to see Max and John Mayer trade off on some guitar greatness! And John Mayer loves jamming with people so..... maybe🤷‍♂️

Came back after 2 years to re watch this. Such a beautiful masterpiece.

Is it a staircase?

We used to cover this song in my band, kept it pretty much like the album version, it never got a ton of response but we kept playing it. A few years ago, I lead off into the outro solo, and for whatever reason, I turned to my brother (the drummer) and told him "Pick it up, let's go" and he did, and we did. Turned up the guitar and we ended it very much like theyre doing here. Huge reaction, and it instantly became a must play song.

That was literally the best cover I've ever heard. The vocal performances, the guitarist, the tightness of the band, absolute perfection.

Music wizards. I'm delighted.

Damn if I wasn't absolutely moved to tears, sobbing listing to that solo... Damn Max, that went straight into my soul!

I went to college "with" these guys and they were freakin' awesome back then. Somehow they're even light years past that now. Absolutely insane.

This IS better than the original. All of you, bravo. 😭

The soul/gospel style of singing adds so much to this song. Great effort!

I was never a huge Mayer guy but I've been obsessed with the Live in LA version of this song recently so it's cool / weird timing to see this pop up now haha. Rock in Rio 2013 is pretty stellar too. Along with his new album I'm kinda becoming a fan now.

Mayer’s best stuff is not the commercial stuff. Sometimes his best stuff doesn’t even get onto a studio album but only a live one. For instance check out “Covered in Rain” from Any Given Thursday. Thank me later.

The Continuum album is one of my desert island albums. I used to feel exactly like you and kinda took the same path. I discovered Mayer was awesome around 2009ish with his opening blues jam at Crossroads. He’s a hell of a guitar player and song writer. Anything else about him, I could care less because I don’t pay attention to it.

echoing previous comment: his best stuff is often harder to find. John Mayer Trio has some of my favorite songs--Another Kind of Green for example--and John's cover of "Small Worlds" by Mac Miller is arguably his best cover (which honestly is saying a lot because John's covers are fabulous).

I did like Heartbreak Warfare when it came out, then I really didn't listen to anything he made until New Light and that sent me backward through his other records. I like a lot of the Born and Raised stuff.

I've just gotten into the habit of liking first and enjoying second. Hasn't steered me wrong yet.

Wait, who the fuck are these guys?! Clicked on it randomly from my recommended vids and was absolutely BLOWN AWAY! You fellas killed it! Automatic sub immediately!

The way his solos build is incredible. Every one starts as a soft skillful serenade, then builds more and more until finally hitting the point that pulls me to a place that’s filled with emotion, goosebumps and intensity.

Every part of this group is fantastic, but, being a guitarist, I notice that Max brings touch dynamics to a whole new realm every single time.

Oh FUCK YEAH! This is FINALLY what I've been talking about! You truly hit that mark and bridged the gap between the singer and the band and turned it into a cohesive substance! AND IT SOUNDS AMAZING!! Congratulations, and credit where it's due!

Max “what guitar what used on the recording? Interesting, SG it is”. To me he’s literally the best example of why it doesn’t matter if you have the licks and soul and should stop chasing gear and practice.

Max proving that giving notes in a solo enough time to breath is far better than a 100 notes a second any day of the week .

I get chills every time that man has a guitar solo.

John Mayer should be honored and feel blessed. What a cover.

Never thought somebody could play a solo over Gravity and get to Mayer´s level...but you my friend, you did it!!

I love the band as a whole - but I’d be lying if I didn’t acknowledge this Max fella. Props to his band mates for creating the space for him to do his thing. Gotta be some of the best guitar work you will hear today. That said - awesome cover. Best i’ve heard and it isn’t close.

there is simply no better thing happening to the artist than Main Squeeze covering his or her song such a privilege to be able to listen to you

Of course the rest of the band is amazing as always, but Maximillian simultaneously honors the original while putting his own creativity and style into it stands out to me as particularly special. Man - I recently transcribed the original Mayer solo and this version is hitting on many different levels now. Max's solo artfully weaves in and out of references to the original and his own improvised lines. It's truly next level. I am going to transcribe both to understand those departure points in depth. Question for Max - do you do anything specific on the SG to get that glassy single-coil tone at the beginning? Split coil or roll back tone/volume?

I'm crying, just discovered The Main squeeze for myself, great performance of legendary song, great sound, and soulful, Thank you! You guys touched my soul!

This song got me through Summer 2021. Only a couple of days after this song premiered, I had to admit to myself that I was falling for a woman that I know was falling for me. There was mutual attraction - gravity. But I was already deeply invested on many levels and for many years with another woman, my other half. Here I was dreaming of ways of throwing it all away, and starting something with the new woman. Luckily it all remained just a dream, and didn't become reality or a nightmare. I am still in the light with my lady, and I never allowed myself and the other woman to get close enough to be anything but acquaintances, we're not even friends. When I hear this song, I think of the other woman, but all she is is just another beautiful woman to me that provided me a beautiful dream, not reality.

John Mayer is one of my favorite musicians from the past 30 years. His performance of this song with John Legend at the 2006 Grammys is what pulled me away from angsty 00s teenager standbys and into the world of R&B. And despite my loving of The Main Squeeze's entire discography (that I've heard), I somehow thought this cover would try to depart from the original in a way that I didn't enjoy. Mainly because I thought "this song is such a vibe that if you stick to it, you won't sound meaningfully original. But if you depart from it, you'll ruin in." I stand chastened and rebuked.

Hearing this song with that SG fullness… especially when the dude can absolutely slay on that thing… bliss.

That SG has a remarkable Telecaster tone to it in this song. I dare say some very nice EQ analysis has been done on those humbuckers to get that tone. It sounds beautiful.

My god. I’m a HUGE John Mayer fan. He’s the reason I started playing guitar many moons ago. And I swear, I closed my eyes and if I didn’t know any better I would have thought they was the man himself. Apart from the humbuckers ☺️. Incredible job Max!

I’ve seen a lot of Gravity covers.. from the guitar solo having a personal touch but remaining in tune with the original, to the background vocals you put on the where the light is part, this cover does the original justice. That guitarist transcends here, and I’m impressed he got this close to a Strat tone on an SG! Fire all around. Seriously.

From a small town in Gosport in England, I grew up on Clapton, dire straits, Queen and now I can add these to my favourite bands. Clapton and knophler are the only guitarist to give me the goosebumps and now so does this guy!!! This band is a amazing!!! While my guitar cover blew my mind!!!

God I get a little “Prince vibe” during that guitar solo…goosebumps

I love the shots where Max and Corey are jumping around and Rob is solidly rooted to the ground, just as into it.

It being live doesn't make a difference to the ability to mix it, they'll be recording loads of different tracks during this performance.
