bloody nuts ....there are absolutely ZERO vehicle manuals, parts manuals, or any information on vehicles in maori....what a 100% waste of time, resources and money...and some daft business idea of having a maori speaking vehicle repair business would be the fastest failing business in New Zealand ....so few actually speak the lingo, and imagine them trying to ring Ford and order a part ....the first phone call would be back having to speak in Engish..

Nursing is already this way. You can be great at all the attributes and skills required to be a great nurse but the current NZ has government (Labour) has implemented Māori subjects you must pass to qualify as a nurse. Omg how many languages do we need to learn in, if I knew all the languages of all my ancestors I'd get nothing useful done. I'm spanish, Irish, basque, scottish, english,Swedish,Norwegian,German, welsh and Jewish but at least I actually know about my european background unlike a lot of other people unfortunately and just get called "pakeha" which is just "white" so well done on that front guys. So respectful. As a descendent of actual settlers I respect that these learning institutions are placed here by british NZers, some were even donated and built with their own bare hands, hammer and nails and saws, no glue guns and nail guns and skilsaws here, no aliexpress and click and collect, no hotels for isolation with free food, they were left stranded on islands with sickness, no doctors, people died of starvation. These are good people that had a hard time and a being punished for surviving and flourishing. They built these themselves, they experienced real poverty and I would give them more respect than that if you are constantly demanding respect considering all maori have british ancestors. These priorities are so out of whack and very unproductive and a total waste of money. Not everything that is british in NZ has to have a maori stamp on it because these are not the efforts of a maori culture. We used the land we were given even though a lot of tribes weren't communicated clearly with by maori chiefs setting up settlers in a really messed up way, some settlers were eaten through not being communicated with properly, its horrendous. So we do as we choose with the land "given" to us as we are now dumped here, like build hospitals, schools, roads, farms, houses that lasted 100 plus years, most sustainable houses ever, transportation, electricity, telephones with appropriately English titles and a lot of people benefit from that to this day. Television was a Scottish invention, so british culture that you're plastering maori language on english speaking NZ news channels is very bizarre without any context. Have respect as to where these efforts come from, you don't need to replace your own ancestors efforts and insult "colonials" by replacing them, these people were survivors and hard working. Stop looking at british institutions as maori. All maori at this point have british ancestors and should speak english if you respect all your ancestors through having british family and going to English cultural schools so stop wasting everyone's money with this ridiculous waste of everyone's time. Stop confusing all these kids and removing their ethnicities and ancestors efforts, its repulsive and racist and removes their ability of being proud of both their british and maori ancestors and in turn themselves.

Yes I agree with Sean Plunket on this craziness by the Christchurch Polytechnic in trying to use Maori in teaching the young motor mechanics the required trade skills, I was a panelbeating and welding tutor for around 20 years at the Otago Polytechnic, plus I also taught overseas. I did learn about a situation in 1991 where Wellington Polytechnic was running a full-time year course for guys who were wanting to learn Motorbody engineering skills on re-building vintage cars bodies. These students had paid big money to be in that course, some of them had taken time off for that year just to learn those metal work skills. The panelbeating tutor in charge of that course the late Harry Bode who was the Panebeating Course Supervisor, he told me that he and the tutor a Neville Alexander, had to beg the students to take a day off from their course in the 3rd term, to attend for the day to attend a Maori meeting house and have lunch with the Maori elders. The reason why this had to happen was that the NZ Education Department in Wellington would not pass over the Government funding to the Wellington Polytechnic for that course, unless that Vintage car course students attended the local Maori meeting house get together. Hence all this Maori blackmailing had been introduced by the NZ Government, as far back as that year in November 1991.

This concept is not new. As a senior teacher teaching Chemistry at The Correspendence School (TCS), where the teaching materials were in booklets and online, I was in sole charge of all Chemistry courses at Levels 2 and 3 NCEA. I was frequently implored to provide teaching materials in te reo Maori by principals of Maori immersion schools so that students from these schools and who were also enrolled in Chemistry courses at TCS could study Chemistry in te reo. It was crazy and I would explain the craziness of it to those people who were indignant about their students having to learn senior Chemistry in English. Translation of much of the Chemistry terms was either impossible as there were no Maori equivalents, or confusing, as any new term invented in te reo would have no meaning or significance to anyone who had not studied the course, in other words, the rest of the world including Chemistry professors. That was about 20 years ago. I'm amused that such craziness still exists in New Zealand today.

CHCH Polytech courses had mandatory Maori components in the '90s. I had to give an introduction of myself in te reo on a marae in order to pass my course. As this is a language I do not speak, I had neither understanding nor autonomy over what I was saying as we were given a script to insert our personal details into. I was also not given an option to not speak at the event. Effectively compelled speech with the added issue of not knowing what I was communicating.

Oh my goodness. Next we will have all airlines communication when entering NZ air space in Māori As a Kiwi having lived in and out of Western Australia over the last 20 years their and known many Maori people there. Very few that I met amongst the several hundred had any Maori speaking skills or wanted them so it could be inferred that speaking Maori is mostly confined in NZ. I feel the language is confined to NZ and sure keep it alive here but be sensible most NZers in my friend ship area have no desire to learn it. The sort of " Maori/ English "on the national program must confuse many visitors to NZ. Many will know English, almost none will know Maori . Must be very confusing for the very vital visitors to this lovely land. Anyway Be so well Den

My ancestors were Irish and Scottish Celtic speakers but the Language was smashed out of us by the English who conquered us and stole our lands and wealth. I would like the polytechnic to teach their subjects in Celtic and since we no longer speak it I would like them to provide Celtic language courses as well. Then the government can give me a grant to set up a buisness that operates exclusively in Celtic and their must be laws to protect us from discrimination should people be found to discriminate against our buisness in favor of English speaking businesses.

So we're going to end up with pigeon English. I realise that English has incorporated many foreign words into the language but this going well beyond that. I understand that teacher training colleges are embracing Tataiako - integrity, sincerity, respect towards Maori beliefs, language, culture when engaging with Maori learners, whanau, hapu, iwi, and communities. They also have to teach kids with disabilities, behavioural issues, toileting issues, English language issues etc. Many aspiring to be teachers have decided not to.

If our Teachers Colleges have to teach about Maori "beliefs", then we need to have them reintroduce religious studies into the curriculum. Every belief system (taoism, buddhism, hinduism, Judaism, Christianity) all need have sections of a course on beliefs. But somehow Maori "belief" systems are different, special, and have to be prothelitised???

This is why new zealand will never have an industry of high tech. whilst it is implemented as a language for the sake of pride it is not a technical language ,and things get more technical than a basic motor mechanic. nice dreams on the personal level ,and i can see your delight in the extra millions it will cost the polytech whatever the maori name is . the boy could show genuine innovation and respect by learning in english ,then translating everything correctly to do his dream ,thus creating some mana, and adding a large% onto the maori language . i suspect he is too lazy to do so and expects everyone else to do his work for him.

  • @annemoefaauo7055

Could be great for te Reo Maori speakers who wish to train as mechanics but also very limiting if they wish to work overseas. English is an international language. Perhaps it is not needed in spaces where only te Reo Maori is spoken but just as most ppl from non-English speaking nations around the world have found, having fluency in an international language such as English, opens the door to so many more opportunities. English and literacy were once valued as an opportunity for advancement by most first nation people. It is sad that some of their descendants do not have the same vision.
