Honestly that was the first thing that popped into my mind considering the setting of papers please being a post break-up soviet union slav states scenario. It would be too gruesome and political to be mentioned in game tho so even if it did exsist it theory it would be left out as the game itself focuses on gritty reality, not overarching lore or plots. (Which still do exsist, just not effecting the player directly)

All things considered, it seems logical to me to assume that Kolechia and Arstotzka used to be the same country prior to the Six-Year War, but whether that one united country was Kolechia, Arstotzka, "Skoatia", or some other hypothetical fourth country, torn completely in half and dissolved by the two rebel groups that would become the governments of Arstotzka and Kolechia, seems to have been left up in the air for fan artists and fanfiction writers to decide.

Idea of Papers, Please 2 being in Obristan is great, it's like Lucas' other game "The Republia Times" where if you help rebels by having bad stories that damage public's loyalty on the front page the game repeats, but instead of Republia it's Democria, and then if you help rebels again, it goes back to Republia and it goes on and on switching between Republia and Democria every 10 days (unless you don't convert enough readers into rebels and you get killed)

I played a demo at a games exhibition in London many years back right around when the game released, I don't know why but we were playing on a pre-release build and I definitely remember a Skoatian passport with a date problem as one of my first 'incorrect' passports I found.

If there was to be a papers please sequel. It'd be cool if you played as the inspector's son from the first game. Knowing that the kid would need to grow to an adult first, The sequel should take place in the 2000's, more specifically in the somewhat modern days. There should also be more countries to deal with for world expanding. I do think the game should still take place in Arstotska but "MORDERN". The game mechanics would also change with the mechanics involving a lot more with todays technology. Qr codes, Phone number identification, Facial recognition, Criminal records you have to print out from a website, etc. Maybe the Inspector should also need to use a computer when on the job to make it more clear that this is in the modern times. Maybe even inspecting the luggage people bring through a scanner to see in the luggage and metal detectors. And if there were to be a EZIC kind of group, then they should also invest in more of the modern Technology. Hacking, Illegal websites etc. Anyways that's all I have to say. If I have time I'll try to make this into a full Papers please sequel concept and post it on the papers please steam community. On the site there are more concepts, old audio transcript for example. I can't find the full dev log by clicking on the link but I have it. I can't post the link here because of KZread. Can we contact somehow?

My guess is that the image with the skoatia passport is concept art, and may have been made available in a press kit or blog during early development. Skoatia is most likely a placeholder from before the map was conceptualized.

You're wrong about this one. The screenshot on the game review page is probably whats called a mock-up, something fictiously created by a game developer to demonstrate or showcase what they wanted or want a game to look like as an artistic guide to follow. This is the reason it's so off, everything on there is a placeholder, including the country name. Game websites and review organization are sent whats called press kits which detail things about an upcoming event or game and sometimes demos include screenshots or footage samples that are authorized to be shown publically. I think its extremely likely the press kit sent to that website lumped in the mock up screenshot whether that was by accident or on purpose or whatever. The question isn't whether Skoatia has any legitimate connection to the real Papers Please - it does, that screenshot on the review website proves it. The question here is whether it ever made it into a real Papers Please build whether pre Alpha or pre Beta or Beta have you.

Hi Vortex. I am the person who posted the map that you quickly debunked that included Skoatia and Semistan. Back when I found it, I didn't think much of it. I just posted it there as some "hey, this seems legit!" thing. I never checked the image myself. I've sinced abandoned that account due to off-platform drama and an email leak.

Well, in my mind Skoatia does exist in the Papers, Please universe. However given the fact it is on the eastern border from what so many false maps say. It would make sense that no Skoatians appear as they are on the such border.

@@sussusamogus3197 Well Obristan is very snowy, and maybe all the border whit Arstotzka is underdeveloped. If the inspector had to travel in train only to get to the norther border, this means that it's that norther Arstotzka has low or almost no population and is far for the main cities. In the real life, I can use my country, Peru, as an example of this. We have a border with Colombia, but that part is so underdeveloped that it's easier if you're going via car to just go through Ecuador. The same happens in Papers Please, It is easy and cheaper to Obristanians to go through Kolechia and the to Arstotzka than just going directly.

And people have reasons on their documents as to why they go to Arstotzka, one of which being transit. But where would they transit to? Arstotzka's close border neighbors, as far as the in game map says, are Kolechia and Obristan. That means that there is something east of Arstotzka that they are going to, and there's a chance it could be Skoatia.

Headcanon: Skoatia is the United Federation. the United Federation of Skoatia.

All games go through the concept stage. So, maybe sometime back then, maybe Skoatia was planned, but only existed as far as the drawing board, and either was recycled into another country and had all files alluding to it renamed, or was completely wiped off from the board.

@2:30 even though on judgement of game you are correct, the notion that a lake cannot have a border because another doesn't doesn't hold up, in real life theres many lakes with a border, but also without such as between zwitserland austria and germany , this depends on the relation and history of the respective nations where obristan kolecha and antegria may have decided to see the lake as a collective dominion where for example they administer in turns , semistan and obristan may have much less amicable relations .. its not relevant to the game analysis but A therefore B does not fly here

This video's vibe somehow convinced me that Skoatia seems to be a country that was once populated but had been scorched and decimated after a war with Arstotzka many years ago that's why anyone ; perhaps Arstotzka commited a lot of atrocities there as well which is why they are quite strict in border passage, screening any journalists daring to uncover the sins committed during that war. But that's just imaginative stuff.

The image with the Skoatian passport is probably just a mock-up or concept art of the game given to the earlier reviewer as a promo image if you think about it (possible removed documents, non-existent country, non-existent person, earlier version of inspection desk, etc). EDIT: and holy shit I already found an old development blog with that screenshot, where its directly said to be a mock-up!

I would like a fangame about a paper please before the event of the main game ! And it would be cool to make Jorji Costava as the officer of investigation like M. I bet Arstotzka and Kolechia are Slavic versions of East and west Germany. Arstotzka is East because they had a lot of Soviet characteristics and Grestin sounds similar to Berlin, and is also split. Republia, Antegria, and impor are all the Baltic states, and the United federation is the UK, and obristan is Russia.

What if Skoatia was the mainland similar to the Soviet Union and through a civil war or a dissolution of Skoatia became the countries we know today.

Perhaps Skoatia should be real, it would be fun for it to be the country you are playing as a person from when the sequel to Papers Please comes out, if ever one does.

also maybe make it that skoatia isnt a recognized country in arstotzka which makes the reason why the country isnt on the map in the first game

Its absolutely insane that my country saw your video and recreated the place we call it Nova Scotia.

I think as the newspaper in the ‘sequel’ concept was dated about 1 month after the end of the first game, and mentions immigration, it would likely follow the same story, this time showing the aftermath of the first game in Orbistran, where Jorji became an inspector

This is a good video, but I feel like you only scratched the surface of Skoatia and it led you to make assumptions that could be true or could be false. Are you sure that you have investigated every lead you have? Is there maybe a stone you didn't look at close enough? Given my belief that you do sincerely want to know the truth, I believe that I could offer a hint towards what you should do next. After all, you came all this way in search of the truth. You even tore apart the game to find what was used and what was unused in your search for Skoatia. I don't think it is my right to outright spoil such a search. Why not go back to that article you found? Maybe there was another thing you could look at that would give you the truth? Maybe you could examine the article from another angle? Perhaps a more specific hint would do better than just a cryptic hint. Exactly 146 days after the review you found, there was at least one more that was published for Papers, Please. Seek it out. You will be able to tell the oddity with this later review once you see it. From there, you can seek out the shared problem to get your result. I am willing to be more blunt or more cryptic at your request. Regardless, I look forward to your next video. :)

I don't think it's that deep you can just tell us if you want. it's not exactly fun to try and search through every review made for a moderately popular game in the year in came out Edit: yeah I've not no idea. of the reviews that fall exactly on your date I only going the GameRant one, which does use the same fake image but obviously isn't the origin (since it comes after) and it otherwise used real screenshots from the game. If you've got a point make it because it's not obvious to anyone else.

I searched for the date (assuming it’s September 2nd) but I haven’t found anything that stands out. Could you be a bit more blunt with the date, or am I missing something?

Insane how a seemingly innocent game about stamping passports and being a customs officer is THIS deep in lore. Glory to Skoatia!

You know, i kinda like to think Skoatia, DID exist, but during the many wars between the Papers Please countries it was annexed, or invaded partially, and then, got erased from the history books-

Skoatia is actually on the in game map but it’s such a small little country that the name tag will cover up the arstotzka tag so they didn’t bother adding it

Then, if skoatia never existed Why do so many people know about it, and talk about it??

This reminds me of that 1 seemingly imaginary country had a passport for. fella was trying to enter japan but was denied, passport seemed like that of a real country but it was never heard of; logo was that of a flower, & it was purple. it had kingdom in the name.

I’m still hoping one day someone would make a sequel (with Lucas Pope’s permission) of Paper’s, Please with more issuing cities countries and continuing from the end of the first game maybe you could choose which ending you should start with

I hope that if Lucas Pope decides to develop a "Papers, Please II", he decides to add some of these fan-made countries into the game...
