Part 2: • Fixing Up An Old Chevy...
Last week I found myself in Jackson, Wyoming, with a pocket of cash and a handful of tools. I took the opportunity to purchase this 1978 Chevy C10 and drive it about 1,000 miles home. The video starts about 15 miles from where I purchased the truck in Ashton, Idaho, and where I pulled off to start a few repairs. While it ran and drove when I bought it, I don't think it moved off the property it was sitting at in over a year.
Chapters:
In Idaho
00:00 - Intro
01:00 - Oil change
03:59 - Clamping on a muffler
06:50 - Topping off fluids and hitting the road
Wyoming
10:37 - Checking a few more things before heading into the mountains
(Engine temp, torquing lug nuts, brake fluid, hoses, differential fluid)
16:23 - Replacing the power steering hose
(About 1.5 hours into the trip. This was the only hose in stock locally, not for a c10 but it has the right size fittings)
25:13 - Fixing the squeaking blower fan motor
29:08 - Replacing the temperature sensor
(Gauge didn't seem to be working)
34:01 - Greasing wheel bearings
(About 4 hours in. Cleaning out the old grease would've been best, but it looked pretty healthy so I just topped it off. I'll end up cleaning/re-greasing them at home.)
Nebraska
44:57 - Rear brakes started dragging/Greasing the other wheel bearing.
(About 8 hours in)
South Dakota
(About 11 hours in, 6 to go)
53:01 - Spark Plugs & Wires
55:27 - Replacing the thermostat
(After replacing the sensor, the gauge seemed to be correct that the engine wasn't reaching the correct operating temperature. This was the fix)
Minnesota
01:00:00 - Home
01:01:00 - Cat

@@christianb.3403 Absolutely, he's a great camera director.
How this channel doesn't have millions of views I don't know. Classic Americana, beautiful scenery, no obnoxious music or commentary, just the sights and sounds of a good old American road trip and some wrenching. Best one hour I've spent in a long time.

This is my favorite automotive channel. No obnoxious music or antics. Top notch filming. Absolutely fantastic!

This is like watching a Clint Eastwood western who drifts with an old truck instead of a horse. Visuals of situations and corrective actions.

Lol, I can think of three that completely fits your description. The fourth one I used to watch regularly until his tweaker girlfriend wrecked his vintage VW.
I`m a retired Florida State Trooper, and a bit of a motorhead. I watch a lot of KZread and have my own channel under John Wingrider. I love video`s of old trucks and cars, but most are just a lot of talking, yours however I think are the best videos on KZread, I love them. Please do more.

It's hard to find a good truck or car sub. They either play up to the camera, make their political bias known or parade their thirst trap no talent girlfriends around. I just want to watch stuff get fixed. Hopefully this one is a keeper.

The most peaceful lunch hour possible. Mountains, a scenic drive, a little wrenching, the sounds of each... also loving the filmography. Talented on many front. I hope your channel explodes.

Thats no joke, lots of talent on display.
Besides your mechanical abilities the filming is amazing. Every single frame works to tell the overall story and that is a something long needed in KZread. Have patience this channel is going to grow to it's true value, everybody sees and appreciates hard work and talent. Great job, again!
The filming was as good as the mechanical work. No BS, just adventure.
Anything can be done with simple hand tools Simon: yes
B-rolls from No Country for Old Men. Awesome.
This is what car channels should be like, perfection
Thanks Simon. I just saved $60 on a therapy session.😀
Talk about doing it with bare minimum tools!. Impressive, when you heated up the engine to get the temp sensor out. That little trick getting the inner bearing out was old school. Love this channel.
Came for the truck stayed for the cat
Always a good day when Simon posts
Parking next to the Tesla😂. But seriously, only a matter of time before this channel takes off!
Thanks for taking us along on the journey.

Now it looks like you're on Teton Pass, which is so steep. I once had to crawl over it in my VW bus in second year. Looks like you're headed towards Wilson if you're coming into Wyoming.

OK, my favorite part so far you park next to a stupid Tesla in that ruffled 78 absolutely love that only thing I would've liked more is if you would've backed into the Tesla and shoved it out of the way or into a ravine
There ain't nothing better that an old car or truck that you can actually work on yourself; one that while you're out on the road you can fix it and get going again or keep yourself going to make it to your destination. Just like this video - no talk, just do it! Bravo

The best video on KZread as of 5-27-2024. You took me back 30 years my friend working on my 78 Chevy big10. Today is call a wrecker, back then id fix it in the middle of no where ! I was thinking the steps out loud of every single work you did to this truck ! Awesome video, thanks.
Always a treat to spend time with Simon. Another great video. And what an awesome adventure. I feel like I have had a break and been away. Thanks for this!
Oh Simon, simply great!!! You made me watch the full video when I should have slept (it's 2 am just now), but every single second worth it. I enjoyed every sound, every movement, those beautiful sceneries making me feel as if I were present, taking home an exemplar of my always desired and loved Chevy C10 square body. Loved the way to film that cool trip. No doubt you must be a professional. You made me react to almost everything, that it only missed to make me smell the old oil once you removed the oil pan's bolt. I am now one more follower. Greetings from Mexico.
I need more of this quiet, rustic, fix-it-to-work content from you. The camera, the cuts, the settings, the ambiance, the truck choices, I love it. I’m a squarebody owner myself and I love watching you work with the basic tools to get these nice rigs back on the road. It proves to everyone who sees this that old trucks ARE reliable. Not to mention very easy to repair, given you know what you’re doing. I appreciate your videos, I really look forward to the next one!
Every time is pleasure when i look your videos! Thank you man! Back than when these trucks are made, the things are simple, no computers and every man whit some skills can repair his vehicle. Simple and reliable machines.

I bought a 97 ford aerostar the other day. I'd like to say it was under my own whim but after tuning in here for the last little bit you've started to rub off on me. Appreciate yah buddy.
Yt is so full of crap these days, and somehow i managed to find this gem of a video. A welcome change of pace and one of the best videos i’ve seen in years. Keep it coming. 👍🏻👍🏻
It's nice to watch this video, no talking needed. Excellent
Found this and ive been recommending it to all my pals at work. We all enjoy vice grip, junkyard digs stuff like that. But this is different. The shots are close up to the work and is a whole different vibe. Really enjoy your stuff buddy.
I am watching this from the U.K. and absolutely love the content. I grew up in the 70'S watching the great U.S. series and of course the fantastic U.S. trucks and cars. I have to say I am always amazed at your talent and ability to fix anything. Please keep the videos coming as from here in the U.K. I'm sure there are a lot of U.S. enthusiasts like me.
One of the best channels. I look forward to every video. No wasting time, great editing, and making things work.
Very good entertaining video. You should get an award. And the young feller is a very good mechanic.
finally, we have simon chevyman😁
Since 1971 when I was 11 years old I have been working on Old Chevy Trucks. I thought I was watching a video of myself and common sense wrench turning. The only thing that truck is missing is the rack for my 870. Great Video Thank You 🙏
the cinematography in this episode was outstanding
Oscar Award for Cinematography. And also for the best sound design! In the style of the Coen brothers
Thanks for all the work you put on your videos dude, we're aware that setting the camera makes the work three times longer.

Yeah ❤ 10:30 in the morning and I'm still watching your videos.
You have captured it! Your videos bring memories and joy. Thank you.
Using the tailgate catch to adjust the power steering pipe, very good 👍🇬🇧
Great video as always!! Those Chevy trucks just refuse to die!!
I bought (new) a 1974 C/10 Custom. I loved that truck. Easy to work on. Rebuilt carb, etc. Just wished it was 4x4. Great video!
"Simon's" favourite part of the trip was being able to dig his bare hands into the pot of grease XD Seriously though dude, what an insane adventure. I wonder what your plan was for becoming stranded at any point? You've seriously outdone yourself with this vid though, thank you so much for all your hard work and taking us along for the ride. Hope life is being good to you!
Another banger from SimonChevyman
You stopped at a Westco station for gas, I worked for them for 26 years. Thanks for your business! Love the videos!
I just love the way this is filmed. I can't put my finger on it, but there is something just so peaceful about watching your videos. Keep it up.🚙👍
Waw! What an adventure. Nothing like being alone with yourself to figure out the world. Very nicely done.
Как будто кино про авто посмотрел. Отлично получилось, с душой и всё понятно. Классный кот. Удачи, привет из России.
Я всё ждал, что он этот грузовик в полях переваривать начнёт))

I love all cars, new and old, but I will admit sometimes I feel my 2004 Nissan Frontier is getting a little old, but when I watch your videos of you giving TLC to cars way older than 2004, you give me motivation keep the old girl on the road. As always, great video.
Spielberg, watch out... Simon is just starting. Epic. I watch tons of car revival videos... yours are the best. Don't change your style. Art-meets-mechanic. The road trip revival format... can you to bring it home (?) adds drama; risk and vision-quest like challenge which draws in the viewers. Do more like this trip to Jackson. You likely can't find cars with star-power (like V8 muscle cars) .... those are taken or overpriced. But find family cars, little 4-doors or station wagons from the 50s to 70s... budget cars with simple 6 cylinders are worth saving and growing in value.
Came for the rust and the grease, stayed for the kitty
Love your videos. Thanks for the boot shots💪
As soon as I saw the thumbnail for this video…I knew I had to watch. This is a truck from my youth. My dad had this very same truck when I was ten years old. Chevy Big 10…350 V8 and big aggressive off road tires. God I miss those days and I miss my dad..!!
I felt so amazing watching that Fram get removed!
So I'm not the only one who dumps oil everywhere! Good stuff man
You should open your own company specializing in creative filmography. I’ve never seen any you tubers hold my interest the way you have. No words spoken…..I would not have believed it but none were needed.
Overcast day, early Spring, high winds, and a grain elevator? Sounds like a dream to me!
This video was a joy to watch and some of the best editing I've ever seen. I really like it.
Sent to my Brother. Best movie ever he said...
I don’t know if you’re a better mechanic or filmmaker. Regardless, another excellent video!
I was so excited to watch this, and it did not dissapoint at all. What an adventure. Thank you Simon for sharing.
Its so refreshing to watch a video that is well put together. You really capture many things to appreciate. Keep making them, I’ll keep watching.
You just earned another subscriber 😊
I've never seen anyone driving a truck and at the same time hanging on the bumper video taping man you're cool.❤
😂the way he grabbed that ticket got me..
“ get me a 9/16” and a pair of vise grips” Brian Edison
Great video quality. It looks like it could be a movie.
Love your work, from simple tools all the way from the camera work, makes me realize I can do it too with a little know how and common knowledge, I look forward to more content in the future, keep up the great work 👍🏻
That’s such an awesome format for a video. No talking, just pure content. You have a new subscriber❤
Gracias 🙏🙏

Y LA CHEYENNE APÁ.???????
I love the way these videos are filmed. Also. America is absolutely stunning to look at. I love how there's no pretentious nonsense about torque settings and paid sponsorship for some garbage. Just fixing the thing. I want to drive across that continent slowly while stopping to fix a cool old truck........
The simple way to do it I’m 71 been there and done it c30 c10 f150 4/4 wagoner pickup years of fun and more to come thanks 🙏 😅
Absolutely loved this video!!
My 78 GMC & I thank you for this extremely relevant masterpiece.
Sweet drivetrain, beautiful scenery, a rusty pickup, a few tools, a little of life's knowledge and enough bucks for gas and a few parts - what more could you possibly ask for? And Rotella is the good stuff, too... I bet that in 46 years from now, we won't see anyone doing a similar trip in a Tesla of that vintage. Or anything made in the last 10-20 years of our time. I'll donate my 2005 Nissan Tiida/Versa to the cause, if anyone's keen... I won't be around to be proven wrong or right, but I'd say I'm correct. I really enjoy your videography skills. Thank you.
Wow, man! Absolutely enjoyed this video. I don't think I have ever been so engaged in a KZread video like this one. And on top of it all, the video is over an hour long. I don't watch long videos, but this was unique and different, I couldn't stop. You had me. I guess it's because I am also technical and mechanical. More content like this. Love all the way from South Africa.
Another great video. I didn’t think a video could make me actually feel cold, but that one did. Was grateful you found your gloves.
Your photography is professional. I experienced a wonderful atmosphere, as if it were a terrifying movie
doing this trip with vice grips and an adjustable wrench is CRAZY. thanks for bringing us along this awesome journey.
I love your cat 🥰 . Thanks for all .
As an old chevy truck man myself, I really enjoyed this video.
Very well done video. I was just up there a couple of weeks ago to help my daughter with her car issues, so enjoyed the scenery. I love the old methods and hacks demonstrated of fixing things and the simplicity of the older vehicles.
This video brings back lots of memories......we changed our own oil and filter with a cold beer by side and did all of the mechanics gadgets ourselves.....custom work and all......
Some of the finest content I’ve seen on KZread.
Pulling the drain plug with the watch in is psycho. Respect
through your videos I started to repair my car myself
Absolutely fantastic video. I’ve watched them all…multiple times. They are so interesting. Please keep them coming.
These videos are absolutely outstanding. I hope you’re making some money from KZread because you deserve it. This truck needs an episode 2 with door bushings, polishing the wheels, and some more fixing. No matter what I’ll be here though.

Well! Very refreshing video. I felt I was traveling and fixing right next to you. I just happened to checkout your channel. Now that I have I am going to share with a bunch of my family and friends. I love the content and the style. It’s over the top!!!!! Can’t wait for the next one.
You just might have patronized every auto parts store in Wyoming. 🙂
Great filmography, like always. A pleasure to see and relax....THX Simon!!!
Thank you for making me enjoy more than Hollywood movies. You are amazing and real
Tell cat I've said Hi! Nice truck Simon.
Nice journey. That's the advantage of skilled mechanic.
Always watch your videos, you remind me of myself. I enjoy all the effort you put into your videos and your work. I recently drove 2700 mile round trip for a 79 F-100, I took my 95 Chevy. Definitely an experience. Also love the cat, I’m a cat lover myself as we have 4 of them. Just wanna say thank you for the entertainment and keep the videos coming. Definitely got talent.
Great short film! Imaginative road trip / rolling resto theme. As always, framing was terrific, as were all the cutaway shots. Thanks and keep 'em coming!
Great video.. i cant wait to see the restoration of this truck now...
