I read a stat last night like 50% of BYU law graduates end up leaving the church. Teaching mainstream critical thinking is a killer to Mormonism.

Also, saying that “the gay people I know are stronger than that” implies that the people who do die by suicide are somehow weak or just weren’t strong enough to not do it?? As someone who’s lost a queer loved one to suicide that makes me so angry. She was one of the strongest people I’ve ever met

I’m always almost surprised that so many people don’t know about the concept of logical fallacies, and then I remember that I didn’t know about it until I was completely out of the church. The concept itself goes so much deeper than religion, the more you think about it and apply it to other things like politics and morality, the more you are like whoa, I know nothing, it’s all a lie. Then you have to try to not get overwhelmed by all of it and that is the hardest part. It’s almost as if, and I’m really trying hard not to laugh myself off of my chair writing this, a veil has been lifted.

One of the only Mormon Stories interviews I've ever had to stop halfway through. Wouldn't have blamed Carah for fighting that man right there in the studio.

Logic gets thrown out with religious and cult manipulation, and that is a key concept. It’s a part of the process. To get somebody fully hooked, you have to get them to believe something absolutely unreasonable..

I love it when you troll the trolls. I'm sure it hurts you at some level, and I am sorry for all the ad hominem abuse thrown your way, but the way you take it head on and rise above it without throwing it back - a bit nuanced, sure, but totally awesome. You are a wonderful model for the rest of us.

That's the story of how I gained my testimony, so I'm having a hard time understanding how you can find any logical fallacies in Brother Alexander's story of how he found the true church.

Yeah me and John will always be bestest buds! But I have three little kids and like doing other types of content on my terms.

I read a book on logical fallacies about 20 years ago (yes, I can read). The author claimed he was an expert on logical fallacies, and admitted that even he used logical fallacies occasionally. I find it much easier to spot logical fallacies when others use them than when I use them myself. Perhaps, I don't spot my own use of fallacies because I never use them 😉.

Carah you nailed it honey! Right on girl! You remained calm, collected, articulate and spot on. Kwaku… shame on you for making a bad analogy. Black people were denied the priesthood, terrible, but not denied sexuality with someone you love, as a whole. That’s a fundamental human right. And if you have to stand on graves to make a point, so be it.

The very bottom line in the Mormon and JW religions as to why they will go to any length to defend the ridiculous beliefs, or just avoid confrontation at all, is that there are consequences for leaving. It's an emotional problem, not a logical one. You cannot produce any logic, no matter how sound, that will get through. They must want to see it for themselves. If a Mormon or JW can see that there is safety and love on the other side then they may take that first step of searching.

Saying that LGBT people are welcome at an LDS church. It's the minority of cases and the MMs are pretending it's the most typical experience. Is there a named fallacy where you switch the most common with the rare exceptions?

This was fantastic. What did it for me is during the pandemic I did a lot of study of ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Rome and Greece. and came to realize how fake the Bible was. That led to a domino effect of the Book of Mormon, God, Jesus etc. Another was a statement made is priesthood meeting once when someone asked "How do you know if something is a blessing or just a coincidence." The teachers answer, who was some high and mighty church scholar, said he chose to believe every good thing is a blessing and every bad thing is test. That statement resonated due to his absolute denial of reality. He refused to question anything. In his mind there is no evidence there is only faith and God would explain the contradictions in the after life. That was the last time I ever went to church. Since then I've come to see how absolutely wicked and deceptive all religions are.

I have watched the David Alexander videos and chatted with him. I then presented his pro-Mormon arguments to some missionaries.. LDS is the right church because everybody attacks it. I believe everything Joseph Smith says, because I am a simple man and Jesus says we should have the faith of a child....so, therefore I just believe in Mormonism because it feels good. They accepted these arguments with quiet and stoic repose. They did not dare refute anything pro-mormon, but probably could not believe the simple insanity of my arguments. That is where these boys lost credibility with me. If they were honest and true, then they should have encouraged me to believe for better reasons....but they don't have any better reasons. Done and done.

Not that last commenter at the end of the video (you put on the screen, that Samantha replied to) calling Samantha weak 😂 They don't know how fucking hard it is to dismantle your whole fucking LIFE. Leaving the church is a brave thing to do. It's like transphobic comments I've seen Jammidodger cover on his channel, ones that say we're trying to make children trans and get gender affirming care when they're "too young to even know their gender" (though gender affirming care is not the phrase they use, and cisgender kids are never "too young" to know their gender). Jamie always says that trans people are never trying to force other people to be trans. Because, of course the whole gay and trans "agenda" is to make people have less rights, experience discrimination from all around them, and potentially be disowned from family and friends, right? We're all just over here trying to exponentially raise your kiddo's chances of suicidality, bad mental health (bc of things like not being accepted for who you are), and a generally more difficult life. *To clarify - not saying queer ppl can't have full lives. I'm queer myself (though I'm cis, not trans, so I'm just speaking from a point of observation and not from personal experience about that). I'm just saying that, statistically speaking, it's a lot more difficult, there's less acceptance for who we are, we have less rights, we face discrimination, and it's a whole fucking journey for most people to get to the point of accepting and loving who they are because they/we are taught to be ashamed of ourselves. Because our mere existence as our true selves is taught as wrong, immoral.* I'm waffling on here. But there's one more thing I want to say. One of my favorite comments I've ever heard on Mormon Stories was from you, Carah. No idea which episode, and I could be butchering it. But I remember you saying something along the lines of: You'd never want someone to go through a faith crisis if they don't have to. I've seen that sentiment reflected more on Mormon Stories ever since I listened to whichever episode that was. John and the interviewees often stress that they're sharing their stories not to make the church go away, not to attack it unwarranted, but to try and make it change for the better. To make those changes happen - changes that have already started happening. Like you said in this video - changes brought about that members are often grateful for, not knowing they come at the cost of excommunicating people like John Dehlin for speaking those truths and pushing for that change. Because we know the church isn't going to go away. And because faith crises can be traumatic. Like yeah I'd love it if the church just doesn't exist. But that's not realistic, and there are people I love who are in it who would be so so so destroyed by not having it. Even though it's harmful as fuck. So that's why people like you and John and Samantha and Tanner are sharing your voices: there needs to be change. So, anyway. Yeah. I've thought of that sentiment a lot lately - of not wanting to make people go thru a faith crisis if they don't have to. Especially with my little brother on a mission. So instead of shoving things like the CES letter in his face, I'm quietly supportive, and keep gently but firmly reminding him that he's loved, and that I'm here for him if he needs anything. (I gave him my phone number in case he needs it for an emergency. He probably doesn't have it memorized - I don't have his memorized lol.) He's more of a Jesus oriented guy, and seems to be focused on serving and loving ppl, and seeing the nuance in things, instead of going for straight numbers. But it's rough out there. I wouldn't make this case to try to prove something but rather opposition presents an opportunity to weigh evidence and make a choice. Your take on the church doesn't disprove it, it I were to make my case I wouldn't be proving anything either just presenting cases for consideration. After weighing evidence I come to a different conclusion than you have.

Being exmo, I'm not taking Meldrum's position, but I do understand what he was trying to say, which is basically: God alone determines what is and is not a sin. So although homosexuality is nothing like pedophilia (few things are worse than victimizing a child), God nonetheless told us that it is a sin. To label them both a sin is not making them equivalent in degree. If I fall short of perfection by 1% (by being homosexual) or by 100% (by abusing a child), either way I fall short. It seems to me then, that the only effective way to present an argument against what folks like Meldrum believe is to question whether or not God actually did define same sex relationships as sinful. And in that, there is little evidence, aside from a few misunderstood scriptures from the Bible. Outside of the Bible, their evidence is to just quote each other and past leaders in a spate of circular "reasoning". I hope this made sense. Keep up the good work Carah.

Isn’t an apology the opposite of a judgment? Only you can know your own intentions. Sometimes you apologize for something no one else noticed but you know it was wrong because of your intentions, and you want to be honest and get it off your chest. And sometimes you might have to apologize for something where you acted with good intentions but accidentally caused something bad to happen, in which case it’s not your “fault” in the same way but apologizing makes you seem nicer and helps with social cohesion. It also lets people know you’ve learned better if it was some kind of mistake due to ignorance (if the only reason you did the thing was because you didn’t know a certain piece of information, people will trust you more if they know that you’ve figured out the missing information so you’re unlikely to make the same mistake). If it was just a totally random accident and not a mistake on your part at all, apologizing is just a social thing to make you seem nice and to make people trust you. Imagine if someone accidentally stepped on your foot or spilled their drink on you or your stuff but didn’t apologize because it was an accident and they didn’t mean to do it… it would seem weird and you’d think that person wasn’t as nice or trustworthy as someone who did apologize for those things. That kind of apology is about showing concern for the person who was affected, not about judging yourself as “guilty”.

Not sure I agree with this fallacy bingo. Trying to figure out logic based on fallacies is relatively inefficient in my opinion. To give just one example, the religious people in the clip are saying, "You're saying, either we change this ritual, or a bunch of lgbt people will suislide. And that's a bad argument." The comeback is, this is a false dichotomy. I suppose you could shoehorn that in. A much more effective response would be, "there are hundreds of thousands -- no -- millions of lgbt people. If you don't change your ritual, only seven of them will _ill themselves. Max. Guaranteed. Don't worry about it... There'll still be plenty of lgbt people around." You might want to add, "you should consider the other negative consequences instead." To fully digest the logic of an argument, you only need to acknowledge two fallacies. The does not follow fallacy, and arguments that end in contradiction. You do a little math on that, and you know the validity of any argument. This will prevent you from falling into a trap of assuming an argument is bad simply because you don't like the conclusion, and then force fitting a fallacy in, without understanding why it is a fallacy. Afterwards, you can open up more response possibilities by looking at moral and emotional arguments. When these Christian apologists are talking on the job, they are attempting to say three things at once. Reading the logic and responding in kind is a simple matter of some math. Next you want to read connotation. "x happened, and that's good." "x happened and that's bad." A moral argument. And respond in kind. Finally, you want to look at the energy of the conversation. In this particular case, these commentators are going with upbeat and friendly. You can start with a wet towel, and say, your energy is inappropriate for the seriousness of the situation. Then you need to replace it with a different energy.

Understanding Logical Fallacies are great and all but they’re limited to discerning truth in the physical world, only. Jesus prescribed a simple pattern to know the truth of Spiritual Things. If any man do His will, he will know of the doctrine whether it be of God… He blessed Peter because he received a witness not by flesh and blood, but by revelation. Faith, the Holy Ghost, none of these concepts are verifiable by logic and science. Remember, you can only perceive spiritual truth thru spiritual means.😊

50:52 Slippery slope is something to be mindful of but we are allowed to consider how a decision or action will turn out in the future. The slow accumulation of heavy snow leads to an avalanche. One example with trans stuff. There were reports of an increase in the UK of children being referred to the transgender clinic by 4000%. Now if someone said "it is possible to consider that by normalising and rapidly spreading this idea that a child can be born in the wrong body we may see an increase in cases. This is especially true when there is a profit motive behind it all." Would that person be wrong and committing a logical fallacy of slippery slope? No fault divorce laws have led to an astronomical increase in the number of divorces in places where it has been passed and family courts in many countries are an absolute shambles. In debates on this issue before it was passed would you dismiss them of making a logical fallacy and to just shut up and sit down?

The best way to defend the beliefs of the Church is to testify. Not only through words but actions and character and conduct. (I can feel the heat already.) 4 But blessed be the name of God, that he hath given me to know, yea, hath given unto me the exceedingly great joy of knowing that they are established again in the way of his righteousness.

This whole video is to get you to intellectualise yourself out of your faith. At the end should I be happy and say to myself "I'm glad my faith is gone and I am now not guilty of committing any logical fallacies Nuance has discouraged me to use." These logical fallacies have their place and the more sound we are in our logic and reasoning the better im most cases. But it doesn't mean there can or should not be any faith in ones life. Athiests and other content creators present these as some kind of new doctrine and they espouse them as ways not to think or argue. I frankly don't make my cases in these ways but rather weigh evidence and make a choice for me. Part of the whole problem of all this believer and non believer debate is we are trying to prove or disprove things on a scientific level. Faith doesn't work on that level. It's all quite sad to see former believers so hell bent on destroying the faith of others that many people perhaps struggled with greatly to attain.
