Heck Chopper using Monster point before the 2 year time skip was always a sort of self Sacrafice, destroying his body and loosing control to hopefully defeat or stall an opponent so the others could escape, it is a different sort of self scarafice since he wasn't exactly surrendering directly to his enemy, but more to the power his fruit had in order to desperately avoid surrendering to the enemy or to avoid surrendering as much as possible.

@@simonerz8248 Maybe because you couldn't life with their deaths on your conscience if they were to die? Don't get me wrong there are definitely DEGREES of selfishness. It's just reading Saiyuki made me think about things in a new way the friends there constantly risk life and limb for each other, but as THEY wanted to do. Also speaking of killing yourself to save someone, sometimes said people don't think about the people who get left behind. the people who are saved are often left behind to to grieving, while the dead are dead and have moved on. One Could argue that from the perspective of the living that the one who died was selfish act as it left their loved ones in pain while the dead are free. You don't have to agree with it. But it IS an argument to make. To come back to Saiyuki there was a line early on, that "anyone can become a Buddha, all you have to do is die, unfortunately we're still living." Basically it was interesting manga that challenged my perspective. Again I do agree that there are DEGREES of selfishness, and for me, PERSONALLY I think it comes back to a line I remember from Law & Order, That "your right to swing your fist, stops at the next person nose" It's basically used as a measuring stick in judicial case of how far individual rights and liberties go. Basically you can have your rights and liberties so long as they don't trample on the rights and liberties of someone else. I hope you don't mind me sharing my thoughts and philosophy with you. this has been really engaging. P.S. That being said. When I mentioned DEGREES of selfishness, what you talk about is GENERALLY, one of the least selfish kinds of selfishness. I do agree with you there. (Laying down one's life for a friend or a stranger is GENERALLY a noble thing, and I am sorry if it seems like I disagree with you on general principle when that isn't the case) Still I DO think it's always important to think about exceptions to the rule, and places where the norm may not apply. For if do not try to challenge our own own preconceptions, we rick becoming narrow minded. I always try to challenge my way of thinking, did I think X because I truly believe it, or did did I have some internal bias at work here. I do find that Despite my belief that there is no such thing as COMPLETE selflessness, people tend towards to be more giving then, not if only because, ironically, it's what benefits them more in the long run. Or maybe that's just the optimist in me. After all if you work with someone to hunt for game and then kill from your hunting partner you may have more meat in the short term but int the long term you will be out partners that can help you hunt and no one will be likely to help you hunt.

One Piece is the anime where people sacrifice themselves for others, leading to them needing someone else to protect them in turn. A cycle of sacrifices where at 1 point someone is bound to get hurt or even killed. But it's at that point where people start growing and caring about each other, the ones that were once weak become stronger, the strong ones have something to fight for because at one point, their protection would be the one to protect them in long run. Great video, made me really think of how many sacrifices there are in one piece.

Really interesting video. I used to always think that the crew's "We cant keep letting Luffy shoulder all the burden" moment in Thiller Bark ended up going no where, but I can see now that Oda continued to examine the flawed shonen trope of sacrificing oneself for power. It makes me wonder if its an element thats gonna result in some kind of tragedy worse than Ace's death, cause the characters dont quite seem to have learned from it yet.

If your dream is more valuable than the lose, then you accept the lose. If the lose is more valuable than your ambition, than you will sacrifice your goal for it. This is regardless of whether or not you succeed, for success is never guaranteed, no matter how much you need or want it. Unless it's fiction and then anything is possible at anytime.

Excellent work. I was wondering then someone would examine self sacrifice as it is something a lot of people romanticize without taking context in consideration. Even then I feel that were is a point in pointless sacrifice, if the people around can learn from there mistakes. It show how mature One Piece can be, and that under all the goofy antics lies something more profound.

However there is one thing i'm not sure in your video, you says that in the end it was Luffy who caused Ace's death because Ace needed to protect him, but if Luffy wasn't here, Ace would have died in the first place because Luffy fried him, and stopped his execution with Conqueror's Haki. So i'm not sure that Luffy not being here would have saved Ace anyway...

Well someone else might have been able to save him since we know that WB himself had Conqueror's haki too. Then again I don't know if they would have been able to get past Garp and it's hard to imagine how the war would have gone without big players like Crocodile and Ivankov (and Buggy-sama). I think Crafts' point still holds ground though. It's not that Luffy's self-sacrifice got Ace killed but rather that it was irrelevant because it changed nothing at the end of the day.

Great video, I like the points you made, however, I have to disagree with your statement that Ace died because of Luffy's weakness. Saying that the only reason Ace turned back to face Akainu is because Luffy was behind him, overlooks the significance of Whitebeard in Ace's life. Ace turned back because Akainu was mocking Whitebeard, his father and the man who saved his life, he would not stand for it hence why he turned back, not because of Luffy. People say, Akainu would have gotten to Luffy even if Ace didn't turn around, but honestly nobody knows what would have happened, Luffy was surrounded by Jinbe and others its possible one of them could have carried Luffy and escaped.

I dont see how hard this is to graps for people. Ace is BOTH protecting WB name and sacrifice and protections luffy. He did the exact same thing when protecting luffy from bluejam Dadan: "Why didn't you run away?" Ace: "Luffy was behind me." Regarless of the fact. Ace would have had to protect luffy in either case even if he didnt stop and continued to run. Luffys sacrifices to make up for his weakness, overuse of G2nd, overusing ivankovs drugs. The negative sideffects would have caught up to him either way while akainu was chasing them. Ace would have to still protect luffy anyway.

Also Luffy wouldn't have to be protected in the critical moment if Ace hadn't let Akainu get to him. I mean, he probably would've collapsed anyway, but in a less critical moment and with more than just Ace to protect and jump in front of him. Also he was fully ready to sacrifice himself for his brother.

Akemi Homura I think it’s less that Luffy failed to save Ace but that Luffy saving Ace resulted in failure. He himself may not have caused that failure but the fact of the matter is that Ace died (regardless of the reason). It just supports the vid’s idea that the type of self sacrifice Luffy was doing is not ideal in the story

To add on wat crow said. Luffy failed regardless his continuing path of self sacrifice is what made him be in the position to be saved in the first place. Gear 2nd, life span drug are negative choice luffy had to make because he believe that he needs to bear the burden on himself.

Why does everyone pretend that Ace got a hole through his chest the second he turned around to Akainu's taunts? Yeah, he got overpowered from their clash, but that confrontation isn't what got him killed. What got him killed was when Akainu shifted his target over to Luffy , who at that point started to become fatigued after everything that he did.

Vivi's another good example. I mean there's nothing too deep about her motivations but the show spent so long reminding us Vivi wanted to save her country on her own that I feel like its a topic that could be explored. Also I still don't get why Luffy punched her, it struck me as uncharacteristic.

  • @SchrollShepard

    @SchrollShepard

He punched her, very basically, because he was mad at her for sacrificing herself alone, instead of sacrificing herself *alongside* him and the crew, since she was, as he put it, one of them, a nakama. This is also why he kept going after Robin in Ennies Lobby, she was doing the same thing, and Nami in Arlong Park, and Sanji in WCI. Of course, he dealt with each situation differently, since each situation was under a different context, as dumb as he his, Luffy is also very perceptive of these "under the surface" feelings and reasonings of other people. That's what I think at least, maybe I'm wrong.

@@SchrollShepardJust as you say he handles each situation differently but the punch just seemed very unnecessary to me. Like it's only purpose was to pull a bait and switch on the situation for a cheap emotional twist. He never even got mad at nami, Robin or Sanji. He never once raised a hand at any of them. Luffys temperament is silly tho for instance in Jaya island he was ready to fight Blackbeard over a pie yet wouldn't raise a hand to Bellamy who was being a huge piece of shit. cheers for the reply and sharing your point of view :)

@@jamz8729 Of course it was unnecessary, like I said he was mad at her in that moment, unlike with the others. Also, I forgot to mention, part of the reason he was mad at her was because she was being stupidly naive, not wanting *anyone* to die in the war, Luffy was like "bitch, it's a war, people *will* die", obviously didn't say it like that lol, but you get what I mean. v v About the Bellamy situation, either you forgot, or you didn't understand it, Luffy didn't fight back at Bellamy because Bellamy was nothing to him, a man of no dreams who ridiculed those who dared to have aspirations in life, he was quite literally not worth the effort, it was more of a symbolic win for Luffy, like Blackbeard said right after they left the bar, Luffy and Zoro won that battle, it was about beliefs and convictions, not about the physical hits. v v Sorry for the long comment, hope this helps you see these things in a new light. If not, well, you do you, I'm not gonna try to force you to agree with me, nor do I want to. v v Cheers.

@@SchrollShepard i remember why they didn't fight Bellamy. But he was literally about to fight Blackbeard over the taste of cherry pie. It was mainly a little joke but it felt odd to place those two scenes so close to each other. Why didn't Luffy silently allow Blackbeard to enjoy the pie the same way he allowed Bellamy to make fun of him? It's basically the same thing, Bellamy mocked Luffys ambitions and Blackbeard mocked Luffys taste buds. To me it was just a way to build up the eventually "you can mock me all you want but don't you dare go after my friends" I guess you could argue it shows the extreme opposites of luffys character hence making the Vivi punch *in character* . The bellemy scene was basically a rerun of shanks and the bandit but it felt so natural with shanks. Seemed odd for luffy. Again cheers for the discussion but yh I'm still set on calling the punch silly. Cordial debates are nice to have. Don't get many on YT.
