It’s tragic how such a great king had his life cut short, but regardless he used the time he did have to fight through all the turmoil and suffering to always be a strong leader and defender of the kingdom. Great video as always! As a lover of Crusader history and the High Middle Ages I’m so glad that there is an educational channel like this that doesn’t just tell it but brings it to life. I can tell you put a lot of work into your videos.

Baldwin is one of my absolute favorite medieval figures. So tragic his life cut short by debilitating illness.

Baldwin the Leper's tale really humbled me. When people question why God let's bad things happen to good people, they should read about this magnificent warrior who, even with a deadly disease, ruled with an iron fist.

Exactly God uses evil because he can not do any evil and turns it into good and we can draw inspiration off of that it is truly amazing 🙏🏻

This young man is truly the most fit and accurate depiction of what a king should be. Baldwin deserves all the recognition in the world. No joke I listen to these while lifting at the gym and every time I wanna give up I think about the leprosy plaguing King Baldwin and how challenging it must’ve been to push through all the body pain and aches, then I go into berserkers rage and start deadlifting heavy heavy heavy weights 😏this story gives us Christians strength 💪🏻

Yes he would have felt pain, physical, emotional and mental because of his body becoming useless, his illnesses, his blindness and his young age at this time. All would have contributed to his struggle

A most excellent conclusion. It has been said many times, but Baldwin IV was truly one of the greatest kings, and indeed leaders, that ever lived. He did what he could with what he had, he put the needs of his people before his own, and did it all at a very young age. Very sobering to think that, 25, I already outlived this great man by almost two years, yet in that time he defended a kingdom.

I thought after watching these series I would come to admire Saladin more but actually I have so much respect for this young king. What a wise and brave king, and in such young age with a terrible infection.

Saladin was a great leader and organizer...but he was always forced to watch his back.....his leadership was questioned but never really challenged as long as he promised ultimate victory....

As a greek i have some great heroes in our history to admire but the one i admire the most is the good lad baldwin iv , if i have a son i know the name.

King Baldwin IV is truly a Stoic King like Emperor Marcus Aurelius a Stoic Philosopher. Instead of focusing on his disability leprosy he focused on defending his Kingdom Jerusalem. God blessed him with the strength and wisdom of the mind! K

With such personalities of history, I always wonder what would have been possible if they had not ended up like this. Was he able to achieve all this only because he was ill and died young, or would he have achieved much more if he had been healthy and lived a long time?

Hahah man, thats cool. Do you know what castle it is since 10:02? The one in the fog? That is Bezděz Castle in north Bohemia, the Czech Republic. Built arround 1261, king Přemysl Otakar II., managed to finish whole castle within 2 years. The whole hill was basically fortified. What you see now is just upper citadel. There was also small castle with one tower on the lower, opossite hill. This king is the one who founded Královec - Königsberg, nowadays Kaliningrad and gave it to the Teutonic Order. There is even pergamen with his gift mentioned. He personaly led 2 crusades in to Lithuania, crushed his enemies during battle on Rudava fields. He favoured his personal retinue of arround 3000 knights, called "Iron lords". He was one of very hard-core warrior kings of Europe. Yet in your other video, about Hungarians vs. Mongols, you failed to even depict borders of our Kingdom. Rather dividing our kingdom between other states. But Přemysl Otakar II. in fact crushed Béla IV. several times, even mortaly wounding his son Stephen. For egsamble during battle of Kressenbrunn. Befoe he died today, on 26.8.1278 during the battle of Marchfeld. He was commonly known as king of Iron and Gold. He was offered Imperial crown and rejected it, claiming that he will take it on his own rather than beeing in debt to Kurfirsten. By which he made basicaly whole HRE angry and practicaly sealed his faith. This castle was his. Im there, every summer, last week in july till the beginning of august. You can meet me there.

people often don't realise that despite obvious drawbacks in many ways, the medieval knight really was unmatched in what he was meant to do, these were elite warriors trained since early childhood to be exactly that, elite warriors and horsemen kitted in the finest and heaviest armors, with the best weapons (it must in fact be noted here that due to the different techniques used to turn ore into steel the western weapons were in fact superiour, this is because whilst seemingly more crude of a method, europeans melted ore in such a way that the metal would drip directly onto the ground underneith the kiln, (in the middle east they used crucibles) due to this the sulphur mostly was seperated from the metal, in crucibles it would collect within the mass of molten metal and indeed there are sources noting how finely crafted muslim sabers shattered clashing against the swords of "the barbarians" and again the heavier armor and the fact that in most languages the term for knight directly translates to "rider" should indicate just how devastating these were in fact the first crusade was called due to a request for help by the byzantine emperor to the pope, the emperor did so because earlier the then count of Flanders who was returning along with a contingent of knights from a pilgrimage to jerusalem had happened upon the campaigning emperor trying to defend against his seljuk enemies and as a fellow christian he had offered his aid, the knights completely domminated the battlefield crushing the seljuk light cavalry who were ofcourse not expecting this type of foe. the emperor had also not expected a crusade, he had half heartedly sent a request for aid thinking little would come out of it but hoping for maybe a couple dozen or maybe even a couple hundred knights to be put in his service and payroll, that would have allready been a really expensive ask, a knight was worth a fortune in equipment and represented a lifelong of intense training. imagine his surprise when he first gets a massive horde of rabble that pilaged his own lands, which he then swiftly ferried into anatolia hoping they would at least give the turks some trouble and out of his hair for a while, (ofcourse this peasants crusade was swiftly crushed) and then not long after as he would have felt even less confident about getting usefull aid, an absolutely massive host of professional soldiers and knights arriving. talk about subverting expectations and indeed despite a falling out between the byzantines and franks, these guys did conquer back a massive amount of territory from powerfull entrenched states, they routinely broke professional armies with superiour numbers with a simple cav charge. this did also become their downfall in many ocassions ofcourse, one only needs to think about agincourt or the battle of the golden spurs, nicopolis, ... knights were aware of their martial prowess, they were ARROGANT and had a tendency to mistake caution for cowardice and foolishness for bravery, if used correctly medieval knights could be an allmost unstoppable force, but as muslim chroniclers soon noted, shoot the horse from under them and you just need to suround them, a lone horseless knight is a formidable fighter but even the most formidable fighters can't fight more than one oponent at once.
