El Cid and the First Crusade - full documentary
A documentary presenting parallel histories of El Cid and the First Crusade. July 10, 1099. Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, the man known as El Cid, lays dying. He is one of the most remarkable warriors of the Middle Ages. Having begun life as an ordinary knight, he dies as conqueror of the magnificent city of Valencia. Five days later, July 15, 1099 - far away, a small army of crusaders storms Jerusalem. These men have traveled across continents to the Holy Sepulcher. This is the culmination of the First Crusade, and like El Cid, it defines the Latin West’s remarkable era of growth, adventure and expansion in the 11th century.

My name is Roderick, and I'd really like to thank you. When I was a child I read in a large dictionary that included definitions of both given and surnames, that book said that my given name meant 'Famous Ruler'. Throughout my school years (before the web) I never forgot, but could really never find any more information. I now, at age 45, finally understand what that old dictionary was referring to. Thankyou immensely @Real Crusades History. Keep up this Crusade of Information you are on, it's great work.
The passion you put into these videos really shines through in your voice as you tell the tales!
The narration was amazing Plus the graphics, the paintings, and drawings by Doré, felt the action the whole time ! 👏👏

On the subject of Urban II, i think one of the motives for calling the crusades was to curb the french and english conflict that would eventually become the 100 years war.
@RealCrusadesHistory
Жыл бұрын
That might be projecting forward too much. At the time of Urban's speech that wasn't really the big issue.
@mattgambill5543

@@RealCrusadesHistory i agree. It was always just an unprovable hypothesis I've had about the situation. The situation between france and england was very tense from william onward and is supported by the historical evidence which occured after William's conquest. As you say, urban was very much in favor of christian unity. My hypothesis may be a bit of stretch without concrete evidence that urban wanted to curb the french and english conflict but it's definitely a logical inference to make in lieu of such evidence.
@RealCrusadesHistory
Жыл бұрын
Definitely Urban wanted Christian unity. But There wasn't much indication there would be all out war between France and England at that point. For one thing, the King of France was all but powerless to prosecute such a war at the end of the 11th century. Urban was more concerned about general infighting among the powerful rulers of France at the time.

@Real Crusades History Hi, I really love this channel. I know you don't use to do thise types of videos, but it would be interesting to see what you think the historical mistakes in the Amazon's Cid are. I' m Spanish and here in Spain the series is been sold out as "the real non-romanticed story of el Cid". We all know that the Cantar del Mio Cid is an epic poem full of myths and fictional events, that the real character was different, but some historians think that, in its atempt to demystify the character, the series isn't doing justice to the historical person either, incurring in presentism and decontextualization among other things. It would be very interesting if you made a video commenting on the mistakes and half-trues of the series. In any case, does someone know any article or analysis of this series that tackles its historical precision?

I’ve watched it. I’m actually pretty impressed by it. Sure, there are liberties taken by the writers, but they nailed the feel of the kingdoms and taifas imo. I was very pleasantly surprised when they referenced historical battles like when Fernando defeated his brother in 1054, or 1063 Graus, shown in the show. Even the siege of Zamora where (spoiler alert) Sancho dies. They did the women in the show dirty. And I don’t love the El Cid actor. But all in all, I thought they really stuck to the history well.
