So the bird in the beginning was designed to look like Matt and Marisha’s bird. However, during the production process the bird passed away and they forgot about this scene until it was finished. They found it morbidly funny tho so they kept it

Not designed in terms of looks, but they used Dagon's chirping to give the fey bird its voice. :) (Dagon was a female cinnamon green-cheeked conure, if you want to look up what she looked like IRL. :) )

@@xilliaz Oh it was all laughter. He has a morbid sense of humor, so Dagon's passing was just an additional level.
For the record, Percy wasn't talking out his ass when it came to how time works in the Fae realm - it really does flow strangely compared to the regular material plane. When passing from the material to the Fae and back after, say, 3 days, as little as a day or as much as a week could've passed in the plan you crossed over from. The Fae realm like to screw with travelers even in terms of both time AND space, and it's hilariously fun because of it!
Another hint at the Scanlan and Pike relationship in season 1 was when Pike separated from the group. Scanlan seemed happy and relaxed when he waved goodbye, but once he turned away from Pike, he looked down and you could see him more sad than the others. He also sang a sweet song about her in the credits of one episode.

Thanks for reminding us about that moment as well ☺️
Regarding Grog and the sword in the campaign, it went quite a bit differently. The sword had a mechanic that it could increase Grog's strength stat when he dealt damage to something with it, but the boost reset when Grog took a rest so Grog (and to some degree Travis, the player) had been forgoing rest (which is pretty critical to restore your health and some of your limited use abilities) to see how far he could stack it. He actually reached the max it could during a fight with the male sphinx and the sword hulked out into a new form but then in the course of the fight he unintentionally wounded Pike (it was really just a random happenstance rather than any control the sword had over him, but it was still an "oh shit" moment nonetheless). After the fight, he finally rested and the sword, not wanting to let go of the strength it had absorbed, forced him to make a roll which Grog failed and instead of draining his strength like in the show, it outright sucked up his soul and killed him in front of the rest of the party. The party had an intervention, breaking the connection between Grog and the sword in order to revive him, and then banished the sword to a pocket dimension where it stayed (magic items, especially sentient ones, are notoriously hard to actually break in raw D&D mechanics).

Yes - they're wisely not making resurrection a common thing in the show as it would detract from any sense of danger, although they kept Vex's death and return as it had a big impact on Vax's story arc. So this was a good alternate way of dealing with Grog's issues with Craven Edge (although I would have liked it to have taken a little longer, they only have a limited amount of time to resolve these things in the series).

Percy's player mentioned that they explicitly wrote him in this episode as a Western manga fan who goes to Japan for the first time and thinks they know everything. Also that bird at the start was a reference to Matt and Marisha (DM and Keyleth) having a pet bird named Dagon, which they wrote in and then forgot about. In between, little Dagon passed away, and this absolute sickening butchery became the most unintentionally hilarious memorial to a chaotic birb that was ever put to screen.

They made a song out of one of their many many many inside jokes. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mn-TuqqSmJvRl9o.html For Grog and the sword, he straight up died there in the snow, failing a roll. Pike brought him back immediately thankfully. They died a lot in the campaign but it's becoming clear that they'll leave those parts out so that if there's a more impactful or permanent death, your first reaction won't just be "oh Pike will fix it w/e". D&D rules as written, after a certain level death is just a speedbump. Mercer do have a homebrew rule where all resurrection magic isn't just a cast but it does have a chance to fail. On average I'd say about a 25% failure chance, on this occasion, Pike succeeded with her ressurection.

At different points in the campaign, all the characters died, some more than once ... Grog's death was to Craven Edge, but the whole party was there to bring him back.
12:46 this intance is one they kinda changed up a little. indeed the Craven Edge did have a hold on Grog, and he ended up hurting Pike so after them meeting the second sphinx, he had a conversation with the sword, trying to break that connection. it ended up killing him and the gang had to revive him.

"Grog's going to need to get his strength back the hard way" I mean... you weren't wrong
Percy's electric gauntlet is called 'Diplomacy'.
12:55 - that was exactly it, being a cursed item Grog couldn't just drop it. Tabletop, he had actually tried to sheathe Craven Edge to use a different sword and couldn't. The scene this is replacing had him finally succeeding the Wisdom Save, but Craven Edge straight up killed him and then Keyleth opened a portal to nowhere and ditched Craven Edge there. (there was no split on tabletop they did these one after the other) Now that they know where the story is going, I prefer the animated series version, because 1. I think it would take away from the sunken tomb moment too much, 2. As you'll see they are going to use this loss of physical strength to tie into Grog's arc a lot more.

14:20 YES! Seeing a completely different side of Percy now that he has let go of his dark emotions (and the daemon) and also providing a moment, although Vax isn't quite ready to forgive, but a way for Percy to be a support for Vax, because he knows what darkness does to someone.
So regarding Pike's love life, iirc in the tabletop campaign, before they started streaming it, Pike used to hit the brothels with Grog and Scanlan. So it's unlikely she's a virgin.

She's definitely not. 😂 She's kept up with Grog most of their time together.
Scanlan has probably my favorite arc in the show. Sam Regal, his player, really knocked it out of the park and I love that the animated show has been adding more foreshadowing to it. As for Vax, he's going through a lot. I will say I love both of your perspectives on his journey. His story is probably the most complex in the campaign and is one of the more interesting and long reaching ones. I really can't wait to see your reaction to where it goes. As for the Fey Ralm guide.... he's helpful but should never be trusted. Put a pin on his character because it's important.
So, just a Sidenote, the Garmelie character is not a gnome, he’s a satyr, a type of Fae creature

A cursed weapon requires a wisdom saving throw (roll a D20 and add you wisdom modifier) to break the curse and let the weapon go. As a barbarian Grog has a wisdom of 10 so he had a 0 modifier. That’s the danger of cursed weapons they usually end up with the lowest wisdom characters.
@Drocksas
Жыл бұрын
That save is only some cursed weapons, though. Some of them can't be saved against at all and actually need someone to magically remove the curse through various means. But final point still partially stands - cursed weapons are not to be trifled with!
How Grog and the group dealt with Craven Edge in the stream was quite different, but it did indeed involve a saving throw. Two actually. Travis rolled high enough to save on the first roll, then Matt remembered that he had a level (or two, I forget) of Exhaustion, meaning you have disadvantage (roll a d20 twice, take the lower number) on all your saving throws. Travis rolled again and got a natural 1. If you want to know what that resulted in I can elaborate, or you can look up one of those "stream to screen" clips. I think there's one of Grog and Craven Edge. :) That said, I don't mind the change to the Grog/Craven Edge situation. It makes for a better story in the animated format this way, as you will see in the next few episodes. Percy is indeed a nerd. Here we see a bit of what he could have been without the Briarwoods and loosing all of his family. And him trying to regain some trust from the group in general, and Vex'ahlia and Vax'ildan in particular, is starting to bear some fruit. Really have to take my hat off in respect for the animators, concept artists, SFX/lighting people at Titmouse and Neal Acree's score - the Fey realm looks amazing. Bright and colorful, with both pleasures, joys and dangers galore. And yes, the Fey realm and many of its denizens have an instinctual aversion to Vax'ildan because the Deathwalker's ward. It, and he by extension, it tied to the Shadowfell, the Matron of Raven's domain - which is the antithesis of the Fey realm. Not evil, but grey, dreary and accentuating sadness, sorrow and melancholy in both its environment and denizens. I don't know exactly how they are playing Pike's character and backstory in regards to the animation, but in the stream she was not a virgin. She just wasn't as prolific in collecting lovers as Scanlan was, but then again none of them were.
Sidenote in the campaign Grog actually died because of the sword. Percy had threatened the cursed blade to release Grogs soul and had a stare down with the enitity inside. Then Pike had to bring Grog back with rivivify and break the connection with greater restoration.
Fun fact Trinket was voiced by Cheech Marin.

Can't believe we didn't recognize that voice. Such a perfect choice for that scene 😁
14:00 ooh yeah, for sure. If the Briarwoods had never come to Whitestone he'd still be spending most of his day locked in the library or his workshop, tinkering or making clocks or something. And he'd be soooooooo awkward😂 He would be even worse at interacting with people than he is now. In a genuine way at least, he'd still be perfectly capable of being polite and civil. Hard to make friends that way though. Edit: Spoilers for later in the campaign (and presumably the show). I have a feeling you're gonna like Tary.
@ShadowyFox_86
Жыл бұрын
You're right about the clocks part. Taliesin was asked what Percy would do if the bad stuff had never happened, and that's what he came up with.
Back in the original campaign, Grog would need to roll Wisdom Saving Throws to see if he was able to put down Craven Edge at all, fairly standard cursed weapon stuff. The difference though is that back then, he didn't lose his strength... he just ... died. Pike revived him after removing the curse and Keyleth sent the blade to another dimension. They improve on this in the show because, not only do these events happen soon after Vex's death (1 or 2 weeks later at most), but death wouldn't really trigger personal growth for Grog the same way. His strength being sapped entirely is something that affects him much more in ways that target him the best.
(At 9:12) Oh Come On! Cheech Marin?
The grass was getting fed up with them walking through it, turning from green to violet, then red when Keyleth went and insulted it. Percy had to flirt with it so it would chill out. "You are majestic! You are windswept! You are everything I could hope for in a beautiful view." As Merry's actor voiced Archie, Pippin's actor voices Garmelie; I wonder if they'll get the other two hobbits for seasons 3 and 4! Garm's drawing of Grog involved bugged out eyes, buck teeth and a tiny penis. Of *course* they got Cheech to voice Trinket for the trip scene! Craven Edge resets when its bearer sleeps. Grog went without sleep for days to max it out, but there's a chance it will kill its bearer when it resets... which it did, because going without sleep means rolling at disadvantage (rolling two dice and using the lowest result). Travis rolled high enough to resist it, then remembered he had to roll again... natural one. Grog's death (among others) isn't integral to the story, and they need to make player character death a bigger deal for the show, so I get why they skipped it. Enchanted weapons are not so easily destroyed. Pike revived Grog, and Keyleth shifted Cravey to an island floating in the astral plane, where the chances of it ever being found (or fed) ever again are, literally, astronomically remote. Grog never lost his muscles, but it's used for comedic effect (and an excuse to hear Ashley sing). It's just blatently obvious when he's going to get them back... the very fight Grog wanted Craven Edge for...
Funfact: How they got rid of Craven Edge was a bit different in the live game. Rather when destroy it after hurting Pike, Grog failed a will save and Craven Edge ate his soul. Grog then dropped dead in the snow, and the rest of Vox Machina decided then and there to banish the sword to another plain of existence so nobody could use it again, but not before Percy threatens Craven Edge with "If I were you, I'd put it back, or else it will be the last meal you ever eat, for as I will find an abyss so deep and so far you will never taste a drop of blood again" as the two entities stare down each other, with Percy brining out his own inner demon to intimidate the sword into releasing Grog. Funfact 2: The song "Makin' My Way" is inspired by a running joke in the live game, where Matt would describe moving around a battle map as "As you make you way-" it would almost certainly be followed by someone briefly singing a variation of "Makin' my way downtown".
Percy *is* a nerd and I love him for this :333
At the beginning of Campaign 1, Marisha got a lot of crap from some of the fans for not knowing all of Keyleth's spells (and just in general), so Scanlan's 'Keyleth really needs to learn her spells' is a poke at that. 'Making my way' was also a reference to the game play. There is a whole compilation of 'making my way' references captured during the capaign.

@@PrinceIMC I think it was more that she often didn't read the spell descriptions properly so thought the spells did something different than they actually did. Some people are better at that kind of thing than others, and Marisha had a lot of pressure on her to make good spellcasting decisions because Vox Machina was a strangely spellcaster-light party, particularly when Ashley was absent. Scanlan was there too but Bards are a known spells class, so Sam only needed to be familiar with the spells Scanlan knew.
