Matt Mercer said that during the campaign, the vestige and the connection to the Raven Queen were supposed to go to Percy. But of course, because Vex was killed by the trap, Liam O'Brien, the guy playing Vax, requested a deal with the Raven Queen to save her, so he got them instead. If you ask me, it suits Vax a lot better.

The Deathwalker's Ward making Vax super fast is actually a nod to another item that Vax had called the Boots of Haste. It let him "click" the boots as a bonus action for a free haste, which was INCREDIBLY powerful and jokingly hated by Matt (the DM) because he didn't realize how annoying it would make Vax. A rogue getting a concentration-free hasted action to either reposition or take a third dagger attack (aka a third chance for sneak attack if the first two missed) was hilariously strong, and it also resulted in Vax's signature catchphrase "Dagger, Dagger, Dagger".

If I don't hurry this huge lair and it's actions I've made won't be used at all. Better run away!" Then Vax moves 120 feet in a single round and gets a critical hit on the big dumb dragon... Lol. Basically he said "You need to do a roll to revive now" and the DC gets higher each time that character dies. So eventually revival becomes impossible. The group can make 3 skill checks to try and lower the DC to make it more likely to work. It's a really good system, and I think Wizards should just put it in their own books.

Also Beastmaster Rangers are kinda ass, so Matt kinda had to give Laura some extra custom abilities so she wasn't lagging behind power wise. Fenthris was specifically for her. The "Not a Beholder" is a legally distinct creature that replaced the Beholder the party fought in the campaign here, since Beholders are copyrighted. Same reason Grog is a Half-Giant instead of a Goliath, we have the gods The Everlight, The Dawnfather, and the Matron of Ravens instead of Sarenrae, Pelor, and the Raven Queen respectively. While they're allowed to use them in Critical Role itself due to it being a D&D game, Legend of Vox Machina can't use D&D-specific names and appearances of races. The crew have dubbed this creature the "Onlooker" instead of a Beholder, but for all intents and purposes that's what it's supposed to be.

@Blind Wave Fun Fact: Will Friedle pointed out during the Critical Role Watch Party for this episode that this series was the first time he has ever swore professionally. Up until Legend of Vox Machina, Will has never swore on tape. Another Fun Fact: In the campaign, The Locket did not belong to Zahra. The Locket belonged to Purvon. They found it around his neck in the sarcophagus along with the Deathwalker's Ward. And in the campaign, Purvon's Wolf was inside the locket. So in the campaign, they didn't immediately put Trinket in the locket because the Wolf was already in there. Instead they released the Wolf after they got back to Whitestone, then they put Trinket in the locket. So in the campaign's canon, Purvon's Wolf now stands guard over Whitestone.

On the topic of D&D and Death Gods, it's... a thing. D&D has had a few Gods of Death over the years, mostly ranging from Neutral to Evil on the alignment scale. Some of them mix the Death portfolio with other unpleasant things like murder and undeath, others don't. The Raven Queen is by far the most popular with D&D's newer audience, largely because a lot of people were onboarded by or because of the 5e Actual Play Podcast sphere, your Critical Roles and your The Adventure Zones, both of which used her reasonably prominently during their landmark first campaigns. What's interesting to note, though, is that the popular depiction of the Raven Queen is actually based heavily in _4e_ as opposed to 5e, largely because the 5e Raven Queen lore sucks. The old-school fans got Big Mad about her replacing the previous Death God in 4e, and WotC attempted to please them by rewriting her lore into a bad Evanescence song where her ascension failed and now she "collects tragedies" or some shit like that. Most people ignore that and just keep depicting her as she was in 4e, and the Big Mad old-school fans still weren't happy because D&D fans are about as unpleasable as Star Wars fans. As it stands, Death on its own is generally a neutral force in D&D, because... literally everything dies, eventually. And if there _is_ separation between Death and Undeath, the latter is almost exclusively the domain of villains, so Neutral-aligned Death deities often average out to somewhere north of that on the scale, because smiting vampires, wights, and _especially_ liches is generally a good act. Pretty much always with the latter, since you can't _become_ a lich without doing some mass human sacrifice or some shit like that, usually. So you can absolutely play a Lawful Good Cleric or Paladin of the Raven Queen and face no issues with alignment. Speaking from experience.

Good pick-up that the Matron of Ravens, the Raven Queen in D&D, isn't evil. She controls the moment of death, ensuring people die when they are supposed to. And very anti necromancy. If anything she trends more good. Also, while it didn't make it into the show, because it was negated by this episode, Percy's family had a big shrine to her and this armour was meant for him by Mercer as a result.

I thought the Matron's shrine was Percy's idea as a peace offering to Vax. Whitestone generally was more dedicated to the Dawnfather, you know, Suntree and all.

Well, the Boots of Haste made Vax fast yes but the Death Walkers Ward also increased movement speed on its own. I can’t remember which, but I know one of them was basically a movement multiplier while one gave a specific amount more movement. So, with scaling and leveling, Vax was pretty much getting close to the Flash for a few turns during each conflict. Which led to a funny moment where Matt looked at the camera and said “…let this be a lesson on what not to do when making home brew items…😅” And yes, Vax has MANY daggers right now, but also the Belt of Returning brings them back once they successfully hit.

The Boots are his only speed bonus. The Ward got folded in with them during the animated series.

  • @wiredjerk

@@ShadowyFox_86 The BoH active the haste spell, doubling the wearers movement speed(multiplier) and granting an extra action each turn “which can be used to Dash or Disengage” (extra movement), then the Deathwalkers Ward can level up and give an additional bonus 60 feet for one hour(more movement). Then there’s a certain weapon later on that adds even more movement. Matthew Mercer has stated that the Boots of Haste are a holdover from the Pathfinder campaign, and were designed before he truly understood the "action economy" of D&D 5e. “LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES!!!”

26:08 Its also the fact that some of the really cool and useful powers of the vestiges just dont translate well to an animated format: like with the armor here, the Haste hasnt just been added on, its completely replaced the advantaged on death saves and resistancs to elemental damage (something that was essential to fighting dragons with elemental breath attacks).

Fun fact: - On the Onlooker, as far as we know it doesn't have an OFFICIALLY stated name, but Sam (the voice/player of Scanlan) named it on their streamed watch party episode that includes this one, so that's the best we got. - When Trevor (Grog VA/player) and Laura (Vex VA/player)'s son Ronin saw the scene where Vax is punching Pervon, he asked "why is he punching him in the helmet?", Trevor basically had to respond with basically "I don't really know why." - 11:43 - 11:45 That is literally honestly why Trinket hasn't been in many episodes, Trinket has been generally the hardest thing for the team to animate.

Lightning actually can be considered to come from the ground considering that the pathway is traced from the ground to the sky first and then the lightning is kind of "pulled downwards"... I mean yes the lightning itself obviously does originates in an over positive or over negative charge in the upper atmosphere. However since the pathway is kind of pre-tested, with it starting from the ground one could argue that it does start from the ground. This is the reason why your hair will stand on its end for long enough for you to press record on your phone and to say a few dumb words before you get struck by lightning... Or long enough for you to run like a motherfuker and find a place that might increase your odds of living.

About accepting death, it isn't necessarily about having a terminal illness or being poisoned. But everything and everyone that is alive will eventually die, and fighting it is pointless and against the natural order of things. You can only serve death once you embrace and accept that is pointless to fight and run from it.

It was just the one beholder here, happened before they opened the tomb along with fighting the fish people, and importantly it is what caused Vex to be low enough on health that the tomb trap killed her. They fought another beholder earlier in the camapign, Kvarn in the underdark.
