The film started out as a Prince and Pauper film called Kingdom of the Sun in 1994, described by Lion King co-director Roger Allers as an "epic picture mixing elements of adventure, comedy, romance and mysticism". It would have been in the traditional style of Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. The plot would've involved a greedy, selfish emperor who finds a peasant who looks just like him, so the emperor swaps places with the peasant for fun. Meanwhile, the evil witch Yzma has plans to summon the evil god Supai and capture the sun so that she may retain her youth forever. Discovering the switch between the prince and the peasant, Yzma turns the emperor into a llama and threatens to reveal the pauper's identity unless he obeys her. The emperor learns An Aesop about humility, and ends up loving a llama herder named Mata. Together, she and the emperor set out to stop Yzma's evil plans. Sting was signed on as the song composer. Disney execs thought that due to the poor critical and commercial reception of Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, both of which were serious dramatic musicals in the vein of Sun, the film would be unsuccessful. Compounding this was the fact that the release date had been firmly set at the year 2000, and by 1998 it was clear that production would not wrap up in time. Disney execs ordered production on Sun to be halted. Almost all the original plot points and characters were scrapped. Most of Sting's compositions were cut as well. The film became transformed into a "Looney Tunes meets The Muppets"-style slapstick buddy comedy. While the end result was warmly received by critics, who found it a breath of fresh air compared to most of Disney's fare, animator Andreas Deja, who supervised animation on Yzma during Sun, was displeased with what the film was reworked into, and left to work on Lilo & Stitch before the retool. Allers was also disappointed with the final film, calling it a "simple slapstick comedy", and saying that if he had had more time, he could've made the film according to his original visions.

Here in Bolivia, many communities still speak Quechua to this day, and that has made some words sneak into our slang and vocabulary. When I first saw the movie, I found some of the names interesting. Pacha literally means "Earth". In fact, the one native goddess that still has cult to this day is a mother earth goddess literally called "Pachamama". Also, Pacha's wife is named Chicha, which is a native alcoholic drink that still exists today. As for Kuzco, that was name of the Inca Empire's capital city, which is in modern day Peru.

2:47 - Try Meso-America. This is Incan stuff. 9:16 - Note the cactus where Izma threw her drink. 11:16 - Chicka is the first pregnant woman ever in a Disney animated feature. She's also played by my favorite 'old lady' actress, Wendy Malick. 15:33 - If you look carefully at the falling pieces of bridge right here, they spell out the word 'Damn.' 27:36 - Eartha Kitt's REAL reaction to hearing her kitten voice (which you apparently cut). 32:42 - Kronk's New Groove was the Direct-To-DVD sequel to this movie. The spin-off show was The Emperor's New School. 41:01 -There's a BIG reason for that. This movie was in production during a major upheaval in Disney leadership and the movie changed DRASTICALLY because of it. This movie is the first of the Post-Renaissance period of Disney films. It's too deep a story to get into here, but try to find a documentary called 'The Sweatbox.' It tells the story of the movie's production. (I say TRY because Disney has tried real hard to sweep it under the rug.)

Getting Tom Jones to do the original song was absolute perfection! Also, there's a movie called Hoodwinked that is absolutely spectacular and you would LOVE it. It's basically Rashomon meets Little Red Riding Hood and Patrick Warburton (Kronk) voices the Big Bad Wolf, Anne Hathaway is Red, Glenn Close is Grandma, plus many, many other heavy hitters. The animation is *really* rough because it was a fledgling studio with no money, but the script and caliber of voice acting talent is beyond perfect.

This movie went through a big change in story when it was made. It was originally gonna be a prince and the popper type story where the prince and a peasant who looks like him would switch places. Yzma was still a villain but her motivations were that her family was the advisors for all the rulers of the kingdom and her father taught her how to do magic. She hated being advisor to a baby for her life and hated the sun for making her look old The story would be that she wanted to block out the sun and restore her youth There’s actually a full song they made for her sung by the actor and it’s amazing. It’s not fully animated sadly just some animatics of it

To me this is one of the funniest films ever made right up there with the works of the classic Looney Tunes. A few facts about the film -the woman who plays Yzma is legendary actress Eartha Kitt most famous for singing Santa Baby, was one of two woman who played Cat Woman in the Adam West Batman series, -The theme song guy is played by singer Tom Jones most famous for singing “It’s not unusual to be loved by anyone” and the songs for the film were written by Sting, -when Yzma throws the potion on the cactus it turns into a llama shaped cactus, -this was the first animated Disney film to showcase a pregnant mom, My favorite bit of trivia is when the guard says “Hey I’ve been turned into a cow. Can I go home?” Is a play on the saying “till the cows come” I have seen this film so many times the comedy never wears out and I can quote it nearly word for word it is that great!
