Fun Fact to look out for in the Show. Percy is the inventor of guns in this world. When he points his gun at people they don't know what it is so they are not scared of it. They don't recognize the gun as a danger untill he shoots them

Taliesin is so freakin' great. When his voice goes into that lower register for his vengeance mode gives me chills. Also, yes. Doors giving Vox Machina problems became a pretty common joke in the original campaign lol

@@markamanic Not quite, it was a church of Pelor, with stained glass windows that Percy didn't want them breaking. They eventually found one that was already broken at the top and Vax managed to get through.....but even Vax, Scanlan, and Scanlans Unseen Servant couldn't open it from the inside.

Especially that incident where it took them THREE spells to open the damn door, it wasn't even locked it was barricaded with a slab of wood they couldn't lift because they kept getting shit rolls, Scanlan even cut his hand in the process

Fun fact, the line "You were the one I was least looking forward to" was taken *DIRECTLY* from the campaign itself. Taliesin had some *great* improv in this arc during the campaign.

Funny thing is Taliesin(Percy) and Marisha(Keyleth) are probably the least well known VOs out of the crew yet I think they gave the best 2 performances.

The evil door sequence was taken closely from the actual game (different door in the same town): Between the three of them, I think Scanlan used three spell slots *and* hurt his hand.

Yes Taliesin Jaffe kills it in this show. He's also an old school anime voice actor and has adapted anime for the western audience since like the late 90's he's voice directed for tons of anime projects over the years. Despite being a western animation, it's no coincidence that there are a lot of anime tropes in this especially where percy is concerned.

Cool trivia for y'all - You mentioned Darin DePaul as the voice of Stonefell. He played a guest character on Critical Role that was the same character he'd played decades before with Matt Mercer's mom in a D&D campaign of their own. They ended up with a TPK of everyone except Darin's character, who only lived because he abandoned the others and ran away. When we met him in Campaign 1 of critical role, he'd become a hermit still struggling with the guilt of what he'd done. The character also returned for a recent Battle Royale one shot and managed to subvert the whole game in the most delightful way.

Lulz no it isnt. That's the name the fan community gave to the gun. Percy never once during campaign 1 ever called it "The list". Matt misspoke once and called it the list. One single time. But that's matt, not tal.

Percy is a Fighter and Matt Homebrewed his subclass from the Pathfinder Gunslinger. His main gun is a Pepperbox, but its actual name is "The List" The new one is essentially a sniper named Bad News because "nothing travels faster than bad news" Taliesin comes up with great names for his inventions.

Actually, Percy shot 7 times during the Stonefell scene: 1 to disarm him, 1 to put him on the ground, then 5 more times. And yes, the gun only has 6 shots between reloads. No, this 7th shot isn't a mistake.

@@bendekbotond4707 Well in the final episode, Percy just shoots endlessly without reloading. Theyre not really bullets at that point, its fueled by the shadow in the gun. The one extra shot here is foreshadowing that.

Yep because originally they played Pathfinder where Gunslinger is a class. When they switched to D&D 5e, Matt homebrewed a fighter subclass based on the Pathfinder class

@@thewerdna Fun fact about that homebrew; since Tasha it became a bit useless. The Battlemaster subclass for the Fighter allows you to do pretty much everything that his "Grit points" would do. The issue is that guns in D&D, with their Reload property, would only allow one attack per turn, but one of Tasha's feat fixed that, except better because the gun won't break all the time! :p

A few non-spoiler answers to some of your questions: 1) Yes, the door incident is based on events in the original campaign. It is an adaptation though, so while the infamous event did happen in this story arc, it happened in a different place in Whitestone, and in a different, yet just as funny, way. And yes, there were a lot of bad decisions combined with equally bad dice rolls! 2) Yes, the original campaign answered all your questions about the Sun Tree and the Dawnfather. The lore about all these things is DEEP, and covers much of the pantheon of gods and godesses in this world. All is revealed over time. Hopefully, this series will be successful enough to cover it all, eventually. 3) Your questions about the Everlight are all similarly answered in the original campaign. Her story is really interesting too, as she reveals a lot about how gods and goddesses work and get their power in this particular world. It's a really interesting taken how a pantheon could work.

The Dawnfather = Pelor from D&D/Greyhawk. The Everlight = Sarenrae from Pathfinder. All of these names were used in the original campaign, but they’re sticking with Dawnfather and Everlight for the animated series. There’s also an official D&D name for Sarenrae - Raei - which was used by Wizards of the Coast in one of the CR sourcebooks.

Fingers crossed they figure out that the Duke is voiced by Rory McCann in the next episode 🤞

So Aaron actually was guessing right. The door joke is a running gag based on them actually playing the game and how they always had problems with doors. Always.

Logically, I know talking to the Suntree would KILL the mood of the show. And still. I want it Also! Percy names his weapons. The smaller gun is The List and the rifle is Bad News One final bit: Matt and Talisen have SO MUCH lore for Whitestone. Like it's entire history

We may still get the Suntree talking! By the end of season 1 and where they would be in the campaign timeline the sun tree hadn't actually spoken yet. The NEXT time they see it is the first time it spoke because it needed time to heal and fully "wake up". So it's actually following the campaign, in that regard. And yes I agree, I absolutely need to hear it talk! I hope Matt voices it as well as it IS a minor but well loved character.

Taliesin Jaffe, the voice of Percy, was also a child actor who played the youngest son in Mr. Mom, the one with the blanket.

@@kathi4089 Percy was a gunslinger when they were still playing Pathfinder. The original 5e handbook had no equivalent, so they had to get creative. Artificer didn't exist when 5e first came out.

Oh cool. Good to know. I am relatively new to dnd and critical role so it's super interesting to hear that.

Percy is Taliesin Jaffe. List of some of his other work because I love how all over the place this cast is. Horizon Forbidden West, Fallout 76, Fallout 4, One Piece, Red Dead Redem.2, Injustice 2 as the Flash, and so much more. Also... as a child he was the little blond boy in Mr. Mom. And Ashley Johnson, voice of Pike, was the little curly haired sister in Growing Pains.

The Duke is also voiced by "The Hound" from Game of Thrones. Taliesin Jaffee also voices Mograine (4 horsemen) in World of Warcraft also!

14:07 speaking of the Friendship Onion, they did an episode with Sam Riegel recently, Scanlan's voice actor and a producer for the show, should definitely check it out

In case anyone watches it it is in 2 parts even though the 1st seems to be the whole interview its not.

I've been watching the sessions that the show is based off on and the stonefell moment is drastically different except that Percy in the session got Nat 20's on Stonefell and melted him and he recited the same lines he said in the show. And yes Talisan Jeffe is probably the best part of this show since its basically Percy personal quest here so his moments are very well written and detailed. Glad you guys are enjoying the show cause I loved it.

I really do hope Taliesin becomes more known for this show? If that's what he wants, of course. But at least compared to...well, almost everyone else in the main cast, he's the one I've heard the least in games and stuff, and he's really fucking good.

He should get all the villain roles. (Not necessarily just those, of course, but he's so good at them and enjoys doing them, so.)

D&D Rules= If you take enough damage to reach 0 and minus your max HP, you die. Example: 10 / 20 HP, you take 30 damage = -20 / 20 HP, you are instantly dead.

and then you learn that Taliesin Jaffe was the little kid in the 1983 Michael Keaton film "Mr. Mom", the one with the blanket he called Woobie, which was the genesis for a whole series of tropes. he's third generation Hollywood - his father was a producer, his mother an actress, and his grandfathers were a film producer (paternal) and screenwriter (maternal).

You have to watch The Legend of the Cast of the Legend of Vox Machina - it's a 10-minute introduction of the various voice actors that joined the main cast.

The door scene is one thing that makes the Vox Machina Series stood out. No normal Fantasy series would come up with that idea. It's something that happens at the table and some fails are more memorable than "everything goes Legolas-style smooth". And it makes the smooth events even better, when they're not the norm.

I find it ironic that this episode shares its name with the series premiere of Star Wars Rebels and this reaction was released at the same time as the reaction to the series finale of Rebels. Like an unintentional bookend.

Also ironic that the VO who plays Vax also plays a reoccurring character in the first few seasons of SW: Rebels as well, one of the Imperial officers who eventually get's framed as a Rebel Spy.

As for DnD and the mechanics for Percy, he was a class that Matt Mercer created kind of just for Percy that they called Gunslinger. It used a lot of mechanics from the Fighter actually.

I like how in Campaign 2, they were careful to only make occasional allusions to the Vox Machina campaign, but for Campaign 3 they just went, "Sod it - all of the lore references."

@@Zombiewithabowtie some people are theorising some of the main cast may leave after this campaign...that's why they have been heavily referencing C1...as like a full circle thing ...but others have said it might be because they all recently combed through c1 while making the show and got inspired for their new characters while doing that....idk I hope its the latter theory! bc I don't want any of the main cast to leave bc they are all SO amazing at what they do.

@@AnxietyRat I think it's just that they made it a rule for C2 not to spoil C1. I mean they're avoiding C2 stuff so I'm guessing they have a similar rule now for C2. I do think this is the last campaign with them though unfortunately. I think the long running guests and small spinoff campaigns are them testing out a new cast. Which I honestly think will fail. People aren't there for a brand name or DnD they're their for them. They'll also made the mistake of telling people their long term plan so fans won't expect the new cast as they feel like they're not additions but replacements.

Whatever criticisms I have of the season, all of it was worth it for the fact that the mad lads actually animated the Door Incident. Doors, in general, are a nemesis of VM, but this particular bit of the campaign was Percy, Vax, and Scanlan - the three statistically smartest characters - and Taliesen, Liam, and Sam - three grown ass men - taking almost 20 human minutes to open a simple wooden door. Even worse/funnier: in the campaign, the door wasn't even locked, it was just kind of heavy. Like here, Scanlan ends up taking damage because PLAN A for these dingbats was "hey, hold on to the sharp end of this sword and pull real hard, okay?" A+, no notes, wonderful.

It went a little differently if I recall. I think it was a different building, and Scanlan actually made it through the window, but they couldn't lift the blocker on the other side to let the other two in until Scanlan wasted a casting of Bigby's hand to do it.

@@coranbaker6401 Scanlan had actually used Dimension Door to teleport inside after Vax couldn't lift the big wooden blocker himself but couldn't do it either. They tried to use Percy's sword as leverage but failed the check and Scanlan cut his hand. Then Vax jumped through a window and him, Scanlan, and an Unseen Servant still couldn't get it open from the INSIDE, and Bigby's Hand just pushed the blocker off with one finger when they finally gave up

It wasn't pull the sword it was LIFT. Because they were trying to lift the heavy wooden board locking the door. And so they were trying to lift it from both sides of the door using the sword...and failed and so Scanlan cut his hand.

For the record, I have a train in my back yard. Well, underground in the vicinity. It's quite relaxing when I sleep. But you raise a good point. It doesn't try to eat me.

Percy's gun did have some magical components that made it more powerful than a real world equivalent but in essence its just a regular gun. But something to bear in mind is that percy literally invented firearms in this universe, no one else has them at this point in time so most don't even know what they're looking at when they face it for the first time (hence why stonefell just straight up charged a guy with a gun), so their effectiveness in combat is much greater than a more modern setting were everyone has guns or at least knows what they are. And in terms of percy mis firing or jamming it didn't actually happen all that often in the campaign, the gun stats they were using had a number range that led to a mis fire whenever you rolled an attack.

SPOILER, DO NOT CLICK: The shadow aura effect also improves the gun with infinite ammo and presumabably prevents jams.

Percy's glasses are super cool in so many shots. I just realized though that that shot wasnt as stylized as I thought. It makes sense that his glasses would still reflect the light even from a distance where the light wasnt being cast onto him. Super cool detail.

I played a one-shot with my sisters that was Wonderland themed, so we were really shrunk down at one point. We came across this giant person(actually normal sized, we were just tiny lol) and due to a series of abysmal Charisma checks and a failed Dex save one of our party members got crushed by its hand. Died instantly, smashed like a bug

The Bag of Holding monster they talked about is the Bag Man, and I'm planning to have him appear in my campaign at some point. My players are going to get told the story of him around a campfire one night, and I'll let it sit as something they can think about for several months, then he's going to come out lol. There's no minis for him so I've had a custom one made up. Was actually painting him when I watched this video 😂

Percy is a Gunslinger. It's a custom class that Matt created.

Fun fact the voice actor for pike is the same actor who voiced gretchen in recess and other variations of gwen tennyson 👍🏾

I'd really like if, after the season, Blind wave went and watched the original moments a lot of these scenes are based on, as I know there's a few comparison videos people have already made. I know they probably won't though, but it would be cool for them to see just how things actually went down irl.

Percy was actually a version of a fighter class that Matthew Mercer tweaked and made a homebrew gunslinger class.

No Mercy Percy is the Fan-name for Percy when he is in his vengence mode

Don't think it's referenced in the series but the cool thing is Percy's gun is called "The List"

Percy's character in the tabletop game was a Fighter with a custom subclass designed by the DM, Matt Mercer: the Gunslinger. He has the Magic Initiate feat that gives him some of his minor magical abilities.

Percy isn't a ranger. He is a gunslinger from the Pathfinder game. The group was playing Pathfinder prior to playing live on twitch. They decided to change their game to D&D for the live show since more people play it and its pretty similar. Matt, their DM, just had to translate everyones character sheets and the gear they already had. Because of this, Pike's Goddess got change to "the Everlight" from the name that is owned by Pathfinder. As well the keep they are given is just "a keep" but in their game is is called Greyskull Keep which is specific to Pathfinder. One more thing off the top of my head is Scanlan's Hand spell. In Pathfinder is it Bigsby's Hand. In the show it is now "Scanlan's Hand". Vex is the groups ranger. Vax is a rogue. Pike is Paladin. Grog is Barbarian. Scanman is Bard. Percy is Gunslinger.

Greyskull keep is from He-Man and Pike is a cleric but besides that, yes. They're not using anything that has a copyright, be it from paizo or wotc...or he-man lol

Percy invented guns in this world so has the only guns

Man, you're asking all the right questions but answering them would spoil some dope reveals later on. Just know that everything was meticulously detailed so if something is off, it's not a plot hole, bad writing, or an animation mistake. If it seems like an error, it was likely put in as foreshadowing for viewers with a high passive perception stat IRL. I will reveal that Percy's class is pretty vanilla tbh. If you looked at his character sheet during this time it's pretty standard stuff you'd expect from a Fighter. It was just homebrewed for firearms. He already dished out a ton of damage being a Fighter but against enemies on The List, he suddenly became death incarnate- doing crazy amounts of damage, showcasing new abilities, and delivering the most badass one-liners ever. Some viewers of the stream also noticed that some things are a bit...off with Percy and his gun and it lead to the same kind of speculation that you guys were doing here. So it's really awesome to see that all of the intrigue and mystery surrounding Percy is actually translating really well to an animated series. It's impressive considering their sessions tend to last between 3 and 4 hours each and they adapted them to 24 minute episodes. Considering the talent that was working on this show, it's not surprising that they nailed it.

The symbol on the keg is the Whitestone crest, not a skull and crossbones, and Percy is a fighter, not a ranger. I hope you boys enjoy the rest of the series ! Lots more No Mercy Percy to come!

For the record, the name of Percy's Gun with the names is called "The List."

They started the game in Pathfinder and they basically had to Homebrew Percy's character completely since he was using guns and d&d 5e doesn't really allow for that. Matt Mercer released the build for Percy's character. I think it's called a blood Hunter.

Something to note about Percy’s rampage and the gun not jamming. If you listen closely and count he shoots 7 times…. But he only has 6 barrels. ;P

I think you should know Percy is a Class made by Matt Mercer for their game. Its a Gunslinger. A subclass of Fighter.

Yeah, I think they did make an official Gunslinger class in 5e...but this campaign happened BEFORE that class was made offical. So Matt homebrewed the fighter class for Percy.

Edit: Okay you guys realize this at the end... I dont know if that hobbit comment was intended... but Arhcy is 100% a gnome voiced by a hobbit. Dominic Monaghan to be exact. From Lord of the Rings and Lost. He is the voice of Archibald. If you guys have not you should check out "The legends of the voices of the Legends of Vox machina" or some odd name like that. The cast talk about the different voice actors they got to be on their show and they all fangirl over them. And we get some small bits from those voice actors and a couple lines from the show. Yall should check it out and record it.

It made me laugh, as you referred to Stonefell as a 'Hobbit Sontaran' without noticing the guy he was torturing was... a ... hobbit...

Percy is a Fighter subclass that Matt Marcer homebrewed based on a class from the system they used to play, he doesn't know how to use magic in any way really.

Yeah, he has the warlock Magic Initiate feat. So he can do the spell Hex on enemies. But other than that he can not do magic. He actually really doesn't like magic because he doesn't understand how it works.

I know a lot of the fights and things would be too long, but it could be interested to watch certain scenes from the actual game and compare it to the version in the show. Examples from this episode are the door. From previous episodes are the reveal of the sun tree. And next episode is mostly a big fan moment in and of itself.

Just a note. Percy is a Gunslinger Fighter with some...other flavor...

Percy is actually a fighter, not a Ranger. Vex is a ranger. The thing with Percy's gun is just some character background, nothing class related.

The campaign off screen originally started as pathfinder, and he was a Gunslinger, but they switched over to D&D 5e when they started streaming. I think Matt Mercer homebrewed a Gunslinger subclass of fighter with "grit" and "trick shots" instead of the normal fighter mechanics like feint, etc.
