    Btw I liked the scene where Lin hallucinates that Korra is young Su. It hints that Korra has always reminded her of her younger, rebellious, and sassy sister. Thats one reason why she was so hard on Korra when they first met.

    21:53 I'm with Lin on this one. Suyin's point of "Sure, Varrick's made a couple of mistakes... but he doesn't have to pay for the rest of his life." That's the thing, Suyin. He doesn't have to pay for his crimes for the full rest of his life, but he has to pay for them for more than just a day in fully furbished luxury prison cell. Ma'am, a couple mistakes? The man provoked violence and exaxerbated a civil war for profit, conspired and framed an innocent man, and attempted to kidnap the president and first lady. And that's on top of shady business practices: stealing Sato mech/other goods and practically funding Unalaq's army. The army that seized the Southern Tribe and was led by the man who wanted to plunge the world into darkness. I love Varrick as a character in the fictional show, but in the in-universe logic of the world, Lin Beifong has every right to be pissed. She's the chief of police. The dude's a war criminal who got away scott free. Lmao

    Which in turn relates to how she initially felt about Suyin. She felt like Suyin hasn't "paid for her crimes". She's in the wrong though for not dealing with it, and just passive yet very aggressively makes snarky comments. 100%. But imo, she's right in the general morality of it. Do the crime, do the time.

    the older i become the more grateful im for how korra treats its older/middle aged characters especially for a kid/teen show. i rarely see any kind of development for this demographic, usually these characters fall into mentor/villians archetypes rather than having actual interesting stories and things to tell to its younger and older parts of the audience. everyone, no matter their age has to confront stuff and grow from it, its shows that no matter how old you are flawed and have issues, traumatized and have a lot to learn to become better person. when old wounds came out i was in my middle teens, so naturally i sympathized much more with Su, but now i see Lin's perspective and how unfair to her personally Toph's decision was

    Before getting airbending it's obvious Zaheer was a very capable and dangerous hand to hand fighter. Otherwise the White Lotus wouldn't have put him in such a extreme prison cell. The reason he picked up airbending seemingly so fast is he always admired the airbending culture and more than likely based his personal style of fighting of airbending forms and principles.

  • @Dilligff

    @Dilligff

    I'd go so far as to say he was an Air Nomad who despite being cut off from actual air bending was still in tune with the spiritual aspect. Like Tenzin he was intent on preserving the Air Bender traditions, but his focus was more on the martial aspect and therefore learned all the styles and forms used for air bending. I also think on some level he was driven to do so because he 'knew' the ability was there but locked away. So he practiced and mastered the forms biding his time for the day it might manifest.

    I was going to leave a comment about this but scrolled a bit first to see if there already was one lol. I kind of get why Zaheer interpreted his airbending as a "sign". Because if you think about their four-person group; one is a waterbender, another an earth/lava-bender, another a firebender (apparently the combustion thing is an extremely rare style of firebending), and then Zaheer, who was a non-bender... and then one day he just wakes up and can airbend. I mean what are the odds of that? XD Like you said, he clearly knew how to fight well enough to be considered that dangerous, and also deeply admired the airbending culture. So it wasn't a matter of he just knew it would happen one day and prepared for it. Just more like a pretty wild coincidence, and one that was very unfortunate for his enemies. The fact that he's that good and *self-taught* is just crazy to me.

    Bending is in your genes basically that’s how it’s passed down. I believe that everyone that got air bending was a descendant of an airbender and had the recessive gene so to speak. They were merely activated by harmonic convergence it wasn’t random at all.

    I've seen a very good argument in the comments section of another reaction video that Suyin really doesn't do anything in the episode to show any actual remorse. She kept pushing past Lin trying to establish boundaries. We never see her attempt to apologize, just say that she's different now and not the same person. At this point she's not been shown accepting responsibility for what she did, just saying she's a better person now.

    After Su talks about having worked things through with her mother years ago, I get the impression that at that time, she probably did show reflection and remorse over how she might have impacted others in her youth - we just didn't see it. But she isn't the type to dwell in the past, and has already moved on from it, especially since Lin has clearly shown that she's unwilling to participate. It's a bit at odds with her "second chances" philosophy, but she probably thinks that Lin has had many second chances already.

  • @williamrosmer8381

    @williamrosmer8381

    5 ай бұрын

    @ccthomas when she tells Korra what happens, she splits the blame of the actual incident with Lin. Lin did nothing wrong other than not deal with her emotions for 30 years. Su assisted in a robbery scared her sister permanently and potentially caused Toph to retire because she compromised herself to save Su. Throughout the episode, Su never actually tells Lin I'm sorry. She just says she's different than she used to be, which, while clearly true, isn't actually an apology.

    Some fun facts to know. 1) Kya is not trained in combat Waterbending. She left young to explore the world and learn different Healing skills. She's a master healer. Her holding up against Zaheer is quite impressive. 2) the reason why Tenzin actually broke up with Lin is because she didn't want any children, while Tenzin obviously did to carry on airbending legacy. Which was the only way at that time

    If you go back to when Zaheer introduced himself as "Yorru", he isn't lying about having a deep respect for Airbending culture. Since he was imprisoned for 13 years, in solitary confinement, he has a lot of time to practice Airbending stances, Meditation and even reciting Poetry. It was likely the only thing he could do to keep his sanity. Guru Pathik from ATLA was a spiritual brother of the Air Nation, although he wasn't an Airbender Himself. Zaheer might've felt a similar connection. 13:18 Zaheer tells us that "A couple of weeks ago, I was able to do this!", and proceeds to make a tiny tornado in his palm. He's had weeks to practice, where as some of these new recruits have only just manifested bending days ago. He only shows the new Air Nation a mundane example of Airbending, but he's been training for at least 2 weeks, right before the guards brought food with the shift change. Also keep in mind, Zaheer was the "Sokka" of this enemy team, and even without bending, Lord Zuko was scared of him. "Individually, they could take down any bender. Put them all together, they could take down the entire World...And now you're telling me Zaheer is an Airbender?!" I guess you could say he's a "Gary Stu", but I feel that's a bit harsh. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll leave it there.

    A lot of the people who didn't like Legend of Korra complain that "this show destroys our favourite characters" - so, they wanted to think Aang and Toph and all should have grown up to be perfect people ... sadly, I feel they have missed out on having more real heroes ... I like the fact that we discover they were not perfect - they were more real.

    Isn’t it wonderful how Toph’s granddaughter got to be an airbender, like her friend Aang was? And don’t think I missed how she’s surprised by sisters fighting; Opal is the only daughter and doesn’t have personal context for complicated same-sex sibling dynamics (her brothers probably had stuff between themselves but she’s not part of that), but I imagine it’s also from living such a charmed life. And of course, it’s clear that Lin has been holding onto a lot of that anger regarding Su; much as I agree that she wasn’t in the right (especially in lashing out at Opal), I’ve seen too much biased disregard for ACTUAL both-sides situations to not be a little irritated at how blasé Suyin is about the situation. I suppose it’s largely due to leftover conflict of their previous relationship, and it’s the best way she can approach it… #JusticeForBosco

    Just got to episode 2 right now. And yeah, I know exactly how you feel. I had a brother too, and he's been gone for 15 years now. We constantly fought just like Lin and Su. It's funny, how when the person is gone, all the problems you had with them, any argument, they all feel so inconsequential and so small. Nothing mattered as much as him, and I wish I could go back in time and tell myself to do differently. So watching this episode is a bit tough because I'd give anything to have the chance to make things right with him again. So if anyone ever reads this, don't wait, don't put things off. • @ElMonoFuerte

    @ElMonoFuerte

    5 ай бұрын

    I had the same problem. A common thing I remember being told was "you have to love yourself before someone else can love you" which I didn't realize at the time just re-enforced my belief that I was unlovable: if I couldn't love myself, then clearly there was something wrong with me, and no one would ever love me. Throw in undiagnosed ADHD and autism and add a heaping dose of narcissistic parent and life becomes "If I don't succeed at a thing immediately I am a failure and worthless, and because I'm worthless no one loves me or wants me around. If I do succeed, all I'm doing is delaying the inevitable failure and disappointment, so I have to please everyone and be perfect every time or people will leave me, like they've always done before." As a (properly medicated and therapy-receiving) adult I now know how much of that is BS, and how much I had been abused and exploited by people who saw a vulnerable target (even if they didn't realize what they were doing or intending to do it). It's still hard to overcome, and I'm just a non-bender: a literal Metal Bender, where your will has to be so strong that even metal can't resist it's force, would have the most up-hill battle in overcoming emotional issues. I think if Lin had been anywhere else while going through this situation, it would have made her spiral in a worse direction: having accomplished metal-bending healers, multiple forms of support, and isolation from bad habits (had she been in Republic City, she'd be prowling the streets picking fights with every "criminal" in her way and taking her emotions out on them) are really the only reasons Lin was forced to confront the "truth" of her pain, both physical and emotional. Acupuncture is an interesting, intentional choice, not just because of the obvious Eastern influences. but because a core belief to acupuncture is that it's the body correcting itself. No one else would be able to force Lin to confront these things, but her own chi flowing back upon itself is exactly the kind of thing that could overcome the resistance. In a way, it's also an example of earth bending (paraphrasing Aang from "the Drill"): rather than committing all the strength into a single attack, make dozens of small attacks, putting the opponent off balance and making them succumb to their own weight. Rather than one big grand gesture, Lin had to be "attacked" by dozens of small moments, memories resurfacing, people saying her own fears aloud, etc, until Lin's pain was the only thing holding her stubbornness together, which is a fragile target indeed. In order to heal from our own nonsense like Bolin, we have to have dozens, hundreds, thousands of tiny moments. People supporting Bolin to be himself, to be proud of what he's accomplished, for himself to see what he's capable of: these are the things that eventually break dams. Being kind to ourselves, believing that everyone is worthy of love, that love isn't any one single grand gesture or experience, enjoying the little things in our lives: these are the strikes that will eventually break the walls we built to protect ourselves from further pain, but have been blocking our ability to let *go* of pain and let good things in.

    With Aang I always got the feeling that he found earthbending so contrary to his personality that going even further to metalbending was probably too daunting for him, especially when he had so many other things to handle between starting the united republic, parenting just tenzin and not his other kids, fighting crime, etc it probably wasn't a priority, esp since Toph was teaching earthbenders en masse to cover that part I do agree with you though about kind of liking Aang and Toph not being the best parents. A lot of people be like oh Su Yin did apologize, she even squared it away with Toph and both of them tried to reach out, she was a kid, kids do stupid shit and a lot of time has passed, everybody can change and Su is a different person now. I can't judge how hard she and Toph tried to mend their relationship with Lin since it wasn't shown to us, so i can't make judgements there. What i can judge is everything i was shown, 1. Lin chose not to leave the air ship, if i was Su i'd understand why she did that(she's still hurt and angry even if kinda petty) someone with empathy(i think at least) would have either let her be, or better yet asked Korra to ask Lin to come out and meet her and not just pull up like its a got dang intervention and the first thing she said was not how are you or sorry but, "after 30 years the least YOU could do is say hello" like she didn't know why she didn't want to say hello in the first place. 2. When Korra asked why the bad blood she minimized all her shortcomings and mistakes, and just said, well we didn't know our dads, mom was always busy and gave us to much freedom, we fought for mom's attention and while Lin followed in mom's footsteps while I(Su) was more of a rebel and left home at 16 to travel the world....continued to tell stories of her accomplishments. I understand not wanting to air family's dirty laundry, but i would think someone with remorse of how they hurt their sibling would own up to their actions a bit more, like i hurt her(Lin) when i was younger or something like that. 3. Lin shows up to their sibling showdown, venting/ranting about Su's old mistakes and rather than attempting to be empathetic she just brushes it off with "the past is just the past" argument, throw in her attempt to reconcile in the past and the cherry on top was shade on how her relationship ended with Tenzin. I understand the need for Lin to let shit go, i mean that much anger is not good on anybody and people need to move on, but people be acting like Su only ever screwed up in the past and is completely good now while painting Lin like a petty psycho who couldn't let the past go.

Now recall how she instantly resented Korra in that first episode. All she saw was another entitled princess who just gets to do whatever she wanted without punishment. She unfairly, but understandably, transferred her resentment to Korra. The writers may not have known they were getting more seasons but they absolutely had some things mapped out. As for Zaheer seeming SO POWERFUL of a air bender. He clearly studied the culture and you gotta remember practically no one knows how to fight air benders. The animators animate it so we can see it but normal people can’t see the air movement so can’t defend against it. One last note, it always made sense to me Aang couldn’t air bend. With how much he struggled with earth it’s only natural metal would be WAY harder. Especially in the early days.

    This episode highlights many things about the Beifong family, some very explicit, others intimately implicit. Firstly with Toph, who grew up under rules and controlling parents, when she became a mother she decided to raise her daughters the same way she grew up with the Gaang, free from any parental responsibility and control. However, this reflected in different ways on Su and Lin. Lin, being the oldest, grew up seeking recognition from her mother, and did everything to please her, including for a time she was responsible for raising Su. Raising her sister and still trying to please her mother caused severe trauma for Lin, she could not show fragility, weakness or tiredness. And with that, Lin cannot contemplate his vulnerability, his loving feelings or even his fears. Everything was buried underground. Su, on the other hand, grew up having MUCH more freedom than Lin, as she had no obligations. And that gave her space to get involved with everything wrong. Be it with criminals, family detachment or even losing your sense of judgment for what is right or wrong. Su only recovers all of this when she gets away from everything, and that's when she realizes that she always wanted to have a big, united family (that's why she has so many children!), but she hasn't overcome as much as she claims. The fact that Zaofu is the most protected (and hidden) city in the world just shows how much she tried to hide from all the bad things she caused to start living the way she wanted. But she left a mark behind, especially on her sister's face. And probably Lin condensed all the negative feelings she had for her mother, her anger towards Su, her invalidity with Tenzin and several other conflicting feelings she felt and put it all there. That's why the origin of that wound was revealed like that. Years passed, Su and Toph sorted things out, but Su or even Toph never ACTUALLY tried to go after Lin. It was as if Lin had to deal with a trauma that she didn't even cause herself. And it's even unfair to her that everyone picks on her for being the way she is. The ones who hurt Lin were Toph and Sue, and they were the ones who should have gone after her, and not expected Lin to look for those "i'm sorry". And this is very clear in Tenzin's relationship with Lin, they had an affair, they fought, but they respect each other. Since it was Tenzin who ended the relationship, he was probably also the one who apologized to her for not working out. And even though it hurt at the time, she understood later. In the end, as much as I like Su, her (and Toph's) lack of responsibility caused severe damage to Lin. [SPOILER] We see this same lack of responsibility from Su return in the fourth season, when despite how much she speaks ill of the Earth kingdom and the Queen's reign, when the moment came she didn't want to do the right thing, which allowed the rise of K* .

Not because she doesn't deserve punishment for her crime, but because of the things that could happen to a sixteen year old girl in a prison when most of the other inmates were probably put there by the girls mom and are out for revenge. So instead she is forcing her to live with her extremly strict grandparents, which has felt to Toph like prison during her childhood and will probably feel the same to Su. She is katara's daughter and the craziest thing of all is that she is a healer. She's not a full waterbender like her mother, but she trained her whole life for this moment. She is the avatar's daughter clearly has that training but not to her 100%. She gave zaheer a good fight( not many do that) something that was not expected but it was an AMAZING moment to see.

    Another great reaction video! I love how when I first time watched this I too did not reconize Zaheer at the beginning, but now that I watch I do think that it is so obvious that it is him :) In fact I think that you connected the dots even earlier than I did when first wathcing.. :)

    As an only child I am grateful for your insights, especially in the outro. It explains a great deal of the dynamic between my mother (youngest of four) and her siblings.

    I knew you'd love these episodes as soon as i saw your reaction to Lin in book 1😂 Sidenote: I keep wanting to recommend The Haunting of Hill House to you, but the story is basically all sibling/family drama and it might hit wayyyy too close to home. But if it sounds like something you'd be interested in i think it's a fantastic show and i know a lot of people would love to see you react to it

    Is there some licensing/copyright issue with this series? Or can we expect the next episodes soon? This is my favorite to watch leading up to the live action avatar series.

    The scene where Korra looks like teenaged Su definitely explains Lin’s feelings towards Korra for the first two seasons. She reminds Lin of her irresponsible sister.

    Bending is in your genes basically that’s how it’s passed down. I believe that everyone that got air bending was a descendant of an airbender and had the recessive gene so to speak. They were merely activated by harmonic convergence it wasn’t random at all. Zaheer just happened to be a descendent that also was a great fighter before he got bending. Kinda like tylee. he also happened to be an admirer of the air nomads and their culture which is why he has a talent for airbending.

    The flaw I can think of in that theory is that, before the genocide, the nations were much more insular; not completely, but much more than they were at the time of this series. While that doesn't make it impossible, any surviving airbender genes would have to be buried pretty deep.

    The motions that are used in bending are martial arts moves [which fits with traditional real Asian martial arts - bending is basically a literal representation of the concepts of ch'i] so if you think about it, why would a non-bender be so very dangerous? I think he must have been a very skilled martial artist, so he was already doing the movements of the bending long before he could access the powers. I suspect he was an air accolite when he was young.
