    One of the things I liked about Korra was we spent all of Avatar seeing how dangerous Firebenders and to an extent Earthbenders are. So who have we had for villains in Korra? Water benders for the most part to date and now seeing the horrors an Airbender can inflict on a person. We've seen the good in all four sides but aside from Hama in Avatar, no real darkness from any waterbenders in the original show. Korra is showing us that anyone can have darkness within them by giving us villainous characters using the previously "heroic" side's bending styles. More proof it isn't what type of bending you have but rather the type of person you are.

    The accusation about Republic City is sort of kind of accurate, at least technically. After the war was over, the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom had to come up with a compromise on what to do with the Earth Colonies. They were originally EK territory conquered by the FN, but by the end of the war they were several generations of mixed cultures. The whole story is told in the comics, but ultimately it was decided to form a new independent nation open to all benders and cultures instead of force them under another nation's banner.

    @@jakeryan2805 I think that could be a great dedicated 2 or 3 season ATLA-verse show. Maybe something that doesn't focus on Aang or Team Avatar, but something that is focused pre-Republic City and the brewing civil unrest between the (what I assume to be) 5 factions of the area: the Fire Nation Royalty who want to keep the Colonies, the Earth King and Earth Nation royalty wanting to reclaim the land, people, and taxes, the Fire Nation Colony loyalists, the Earth Nation Colony loyalists, and the Colonists who want nothing to do with either nation (with small appearances from Aang, Zuko, and Iroh, trying to broker peace-deals). Maybe Sokka and Toph are the main-focus characters, with Suki coming and going with the Kyoshi warriors when shit hits the fan, but Sokka and Toph are reluctant celebrities who get pulled into the conflict (I never read the comics, so I'm just spitballing here). Toph wanted somewhere away from her family but didn't want to deal with Bai Sign Se, and as much as Sokka is Southern Water Tribe the chance fro somewhere warm and dry and on the cutting edge of developing a new culture would strongly appeal to him. Sokka, Suki, and Toph being legendary war heroes and personal friends of the Fire Lord, the Earth King, and the Avatar would mean that they'd get both a lot of immediate trust AND distrust from all sides, so it'd be a chance for an amazing drama, and I think a mystery/spy plot would go great: all of the factions covertly fighting, since outright unrest/battles would bring in both armies and the Avatar, there would be a ton of subterfuge and sabotage. ...well apparently I need to write up something later XD

    1:41 The reason Zaheer was so good at airbending from the get go is because he was highly spiritual and already a dangerous martial artist(theres a reason he was so secluded from everything as a nonbender) so he was already in tune with both his body and spirit.

  • @Chaosm03

    Technically speaking Zaheer isn't THAT good at Airbending. He is decent. He is an amazing Martial artist, on the level of people like Ty Lee and the Kiyoshi warriors, but later we see what a battle between him and a true master Airbender looks like and we see the difference. Zaheer mainly uses Airbending to extend the reach of his strikes and his mobility. With a few tricks thrown in from his studies of Airbending philosophy.

  • @MrWordcraft

    @MrWordcraft

    6 ай бұрын

    @Chaosm03 He is good in comparison to everybody else who got air bending but like you said he is not a master, people just really aren't that prepared to battle airbenders because there barely were any. I feel he understands airbending on a basic level combined with his already sharpened senses and combat prowess which is what actually makes him deadly, other air benders were just regular people who lived as non benders their whole lives but even then you can see how Kai has an obvious talent for it no doubt in part to his talents as a pickpocket and a thief from before he gained bending. Some people just "get it" faster than others.

    31:50 Bumi has a point, and this is one reason why the writing in this season is so brilliant. The Queen is a terrible person, but she doesn't ever do anything that is technically outside of the normal activities monarchs do: she taxes her citizens, using the wealth for her own lavish lifestyle, and she conscripts citizens into her army. We think we are rooting against an evil monarch, but we are actually rooting against monarchy itself which leads us to sympathize with Zaheer and his ideals, if not his practices and methods.

  • @SaraBearRawr0312

    @SaraBearRawr0312

    6 ай бұрын

    Agreed, Zaheer is the definition of taking things to extremes - the core of his ideas aren't bad, revolutionary sure, but not bad or evil; its his methods to achieving that goal. Zaheer wants freedom from oppression in all its forms, the removal of class systems, and the ultimate equality and even spiritual enlightenment of all peoples, something the Avatar should stand for but in practice isn't which is why he wants an end to the Avatar, a being he sees as only perpetuating the broken systems. He doesn't want power or control, he wants a hyper-idealist version of freedom and in that he becomes scarily relatable to the viewer.

  • @cookiemonsteryummy2
    @cookiemonsteryummy26 ай бұрын

    So, Zaheer isn't good at Airbending for plot convenience, there's three actual reasons why. The first is that he is one of the most skilled martial artists on the planet (when referencing zaheer and co, Zuko says "Individually they could take down any bender." Zaheer being so good at martial arts so much so that he could take down any bender is absurd and you can see how that translates once he gets airbending. Second, the man has literally studied Airbending lore his entire life, he seems very close to Tenzin in terms of Airbending history. The 3rd and last reason why is something you already mentioned, the fact that almost nobody in the world has defended against an airbender, making Zaheer seem even stronger because very few people have actual experience fighting airbenders. Zaheer is the real deal and the best antagonist in the entire universe of Avatar.

    A little background info for republic city. This all comes from the first comic. After the war Aang and Zuko set out to restore equality for each nation- starting with restoring land to everyone. The main problem they faced, was the fire nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom. Both the fire nation and Earth Kingdom thought the territory belonged to them and they were getting ready to start another war for it. Fire nation citizens lived in those colonies and believed it was wrong to have to leave their homes just because the Avatar said so. In fact, those colonies had been there for 100 years at that point, they literally had been there for a generation. To the Earth Kingdom however the land was stolen and those fire nation citizens needed to be forced to live under Earth Kindgom rule or be sent home to their homeland. Even within the colonies you had fire nation and earth kingdom citizens having families together and living in peace. This gave Aang an idea. To Aang, it seemed unfair to hand the territory over to either side, but he didn't want another war on his hands. So he found a compromise to create republic city, meant to be a haven for all cultures and with it's own jurisdiction. Now- obviously, the earth queen is quite distraught about the land that was "stolen" from her. This may not seem too important right now, but it's a big issue for the 4th season.

    Zaheer clearly has some knowledge of airbenders. The moment the White Lotus guards showed up he was asking what they knew about a specific air nomad which he himself clearly knew about. Also for him to be so well imprisoned without bending he must be an excellent fighter and I think that the airbending is just augmenting his existing abilities more than him being amazing at airbending. Just imagine if someone like Ty Lee suddenly got airbending. Even without much formal training she would be terrifying and Zaheer could probably experiment somewhat in his cell without anyone noticing.

    Over time, without the nostalgia tinted glasses, I think I've come to realize I actually like Korra better than ATLA. Which is shocking to me. I can rewatch Korra easily, but ATLA every time it's a bit startling because it began as such a kid show that slowly matured. Whereas with Korra I go into mature right away. Season 2 I skip everything but Wan really, and a few things. Season 1 on a rewatch I basically skip the romance a lot lol. Season 3 I can't really skip much... every episode is great.

    From the get-go, Zaheer quoted air nomad wisdom at the White Lotus guards, suggesting that he dedicated some time to studying the culture. It can be assumed he used airbending forms before - either for fighting or meditation, and now he possesses ACTUAL airbending, he is already so proficient at it because he had that theoretical knowledge to draw from. All this to say, Zaheer was a huge airbender nerd before he became an airbender :D

    Can i just point out that the escape sequence is flipped from the into sequence to TLA: The Earth King. As Aang is flying in on appa the rocks come and the second one he just crushes peripherally. In this, they’re trying to leave but the rocks skim the metal ship first (great attention to the eye shifts when that happens to show they saw them and weren’t blind like the original team was) and they simply watch the second one fly by. Ever think about where those land XD

    Technically the Earth Queen isn't entirely wrong. The United Republic was created from the colonies the Fire Nation established on Earth Kingdom land. The comics explain more, but the Earth King did allow them to become something separate but originally they were Earth Kingdom land and were originally gonna go back to the Earth Kingdom after the war.

    Why is Zaheer so instantly good at air bending? They revealed that in house introduction. He mentioned a past air bending master who could stay in the air without ever touching the ground. It is obvious that he has read a lot from air bending masters and philosophers. I believe it was Korra's dad and Zuko who put the Red Lotus in prison, and put Korra in that armed compound. This is why Korra grew up the way she did. The White Lotus was terrified of the Red Lotus. Kai is a natural because he's a light-hearted free spirit.

    Unalaq had an underlying reason that alot of people forget. He wanted to be the bridge between the physical and spirit world instead of korra, who isn’t very spiritual. He’s narcissistic and probably thought he deserved to have one of his kids be the avatar. But he underestimated Vatu’s will, so in the final episode, the “dark avatar” is all vatu and none of Unalaq.

    I'm going to give you something to think about without spoiling anything. One criticism of comic books is that the heroes are always fighting to preserve the status quo, and rarely fight to change something for the better, whereas the supervillains are the ones actively trying to change the world. Sometimes, those violations believe they are trying to change the world for the better. By fighting to preserve the status quo, the superheroes are unwittingly preserving systems of oppression that keep marginalized groups down.

    I mean, Korra can't connect with Aang's spirit anymore, sure, but she is still descended from the same line. She is still the reincarnation of Aang and they share some traits in common. So, a Korra-Zuko meeting is still sort of like reuniting with Aang. Frankly, I have a theory that reincarnation is not just something the Avatar does in this universe, it's just that the Avatar is the only one who was able to access memories and collective abilities of their past lives, assisted by Raava.
