The Legacy of Duke Leto Atreides | Dune Lore
Ойын-сауық
This video discusses the legacy left by Duke Leto Atreides and how he continued to influence the Dune saga long after his departure. Spoiler warning if you are unfamiliar with Frank Herbert’s Dune. As the noble leader of House Atreides, Duke Leto was guided by duty to his people and love for his family. Under his rule, the Atreides had maintained a reputation for showing mercy over malice, principle over power, and courage over fear. After his House was called to take over stewardship of the desert planet Arrakis, the Duke sought to fortify within his son all the traits of a good man and a courageous leader.

Duncan Idaho is the real hero of Dune. I think Leto II kept him around as a reminder of what it really means to be a good person, since he could no longer be.

I dunno if the real hero concept would even exist in Dune. Herbert was pretty straight forward in his mind about depending on a singular person and Duncan is too weak to move the entirety of the Empire to his will to enact the change Leto II achieved.

@@summer7603 Duncan alone may not have enough sway after Leto ll but I see where the original commenter is coming from. My perspective is a bit different, that the God Emporer was literally playing God and constantly bringing Duncan and therefore his genes round and round because of not only the humanity first mentioned here but the raw potential the prescience showed Leto. To advance the human race we had to be inundated with Idaho juice

I think at first the Ghola of Idaho was a reminder of a trusted friend of Leto II's father but Idaho went on to be more useful as he was in effect the only "immortal" figure to keep Leto company through the golden path and it amused him to have Duncan as a friend, muse, plaything that he could break and start over with again and again. I wouldn't consider that theres many true heroes in the Dune universe. Frank Herbert was too good of a writer to not have even the most heroic actions offset by deep character flaws.

@@Peter2k84 agreed, Lynch's Dune is too weird for newbies and the Sci Fi original is decent but a big investment. I can't wait to see the next one and how they handle Feyd, Hasimir, and the Emporer. Love that name, she and her relationship with John was without doubt one of the main things that made those games so good.

I would caution doing that because remember Game of Thrones season 8? A lot of people named their kids Daenerys or Jon Snow and look what they got.

Thanks for posting! I think having lady Jessica decide, against her order, to give Leto a son also speaks alot to how he breeds loyalty in the people close to him.
I always saw him as a good man trying his best in a cutthroat world. He did inspire loyalty. Even his brief stint on arrakis. I guess you could say he was the ned stark of dune 😁
I liked that (in the new movie) the Duke had moments of soft/sweetness, but also commanded massive respect in the next scene. The scene right after Paul is targeted by the killer drone, is amazing. When he says (paraphrased) "I dont give a damn about your honor. Go catch me some spies" Such a good 10 second scene.

Strong and gentle Good masculine traits
Lovely video, as always. The thought of Duncan as a reminder of the true soul of the house adds to Frank Herbert's message. He never lets the reader forget what goodness and virtue look like. Very touching.
Frank actually had the idea that Duncan was an Arteries bastard from one of the previous generations according to something his son had said was in the notes p, that I can not find now, but it’s part of why he kept resurrecting the character. He also wanted to show clones are both individual as well as copies of that which they clone. He was also to play a major roll in the ending of the DUNE series as seen in his son’s finish of the series though we will never know that exact end.

Leto has always been my favorite character.
The Golden Path of Leto the Second was the ultimate expression of the Atredes Code. Leto the Second sacrificed everything for the welfare of Humanity. He sacrificed his morality, his honor, and even his humanity to serve the interests of Humanity as a whole. He was a true Atredes, and deserves to be remembered as such.

GRRM also a fan of DUNE & Frank Herbert, I think tried making Edward/Ned Stark a Duke Leto type leader and Rob Stark& Jon Snow(leaders of Wildlings) to be a Paul Atreides types as sons and Bran Stark ended up LetoII God Emperor in the TV series. Arya ended up a FACE DANCER

Love your Dune videos, keep em coming!
I like all of your SiFi work but your Dune videos are by far my favorite. I'm always a happy to see a notification about another Nerd Cookies Dune analisis. One of my favorite parts is that I don't always agree with your summations. For instance I don't feel as if Paul voluntary abdicated his taking the Golden Path but rather the mithose of Muad'Dib had taken on a life of it's own in such a way that it would not have been a force for ultime good. It would have plunged the universe into darkness instead. I look forward to re-reading The Children of Dune and see if what I think is correct, just a possible interpretation or perhaps just plain wrong. Ultimily I enjoy not always seeing eye to eye with you at times because it gives me an opening to think about this amazing story more deeply. 😁
I think you completely nailed it. Magnificent commentary.
If you really think about it. The bene gesiret (sorry for the spelling) ultimate endgame makes a lot more sense. They weren’t just seeking to heal the great rift of pain and suffering between the Harkonen and Atreades (again sorry for spelling) but more over they needed their messiah to be a ruthless dictator and ruler who would do what needed to be done for the golden path to be fulfilled. And the Harkonen lineage more than made up for that aspect and would play out similar to how Leto II had carried out his plan. Although I wonder if the sisterhood would let this play out had Jessica not disobeyed them. Because then they lose their control and power over people.
I really like this kind of video. Hated ones about LOTR
We truly fight for life. We seek not to kill our enemy. We seek to end their evil ways once and forever.
That oh so happy moment when you are checking your KZread email notifications and there is a new Nerd Cookies video you know RIGHT where you are going!!! Always a pleasure! Thank you so much for your fantastic work! You touch on the one reason why I was displeased with changing the sex of Liet kynes, Paul and Chani were bound not only by their love but by their hatred and their shared loss of their FATHERS to Harkonen treachery!! It was nothing against the actress and certainly not a racial issue for Me! This was a great synopsis of Leto and Leto the 2nd (or 3rd depending on how you look at it!) Duncan and oddly enough Otheym (yea obscure i know) are two of my favorite Dune Charecters! Another fantastic video Nerd Cookies!

Well done!
Duke Leto is a fine example of a humble leader and yet he has strength to change the world. Everyone from his concubine and his son and his closest advisors to the common man woman and child loved him because he did something that no other human leader could do. To be one with the people and to elevate the people together. Duncan Idaho was just so much a son as Paul was. Duncan came from such harsh beginnings to become the sword in the shield for the atreides family for thousands of years and ultimately becoming the savior of humanity and fulfilling the prophecy.
Excellent!

"To measure a government by the lives of those living under their rule" - so many governments would fail this simple test.
What do you think of the new Caladan trilogy by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson? I know you don't like their books very much and neither do I (except the Great Houses trilogy and the last two novels that complete Frank Herbert's original saga). But i'm reading the new trilogy these days and much to my amazement , i'm enjoying it! I think it's worth reading!

Duke Leto is to the Dune saga what Ned Stark is to Game Of Thrones.
Leto was short sighted and relied on popularity to much to be a good ruler. Yes, he was loved for being just and kind, but that would not save the house he lost. He had many off ramps to the destruction of house Atreides. He could have offered Paul as a husband for the Carrino princess; or any other great house to seal an alliance. He himself could have done the same but chose Jessica. He let pride lead him into a trap that he knew was the end of all he held dear and did nothing to prevent or prepare for it. He even festered more animosity with the Harkonnen Baron when he could have taken the courtly route and embraced some semblance of peace in front of the the landsrad and forces the Baron to delay his plans. Yes, Leto was a good man but a insufficient leader. One must rule with an even hand, strength, foresight, and a dedication to the survival of your people despite the costs of your perceived honor. For the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Agreed. I think that even though Leto is not as bad as the Baron. He's not a great leader and a lot of what he says is propaganda. There is a lot of talk about the Atraides loyalty but rarely do we actually see it. Leto II in a way and Teg are really the only good examples of it. Alia and Paul certainly are not. Odrade is manipulative and borderline murderous at times. Lucila being creepy as hell. Moneo being a sycophant and Siona is power hungry although presumably less bad than Paul.
The Fremen actually hate him because of how Duke Leto treats them.
Didn’t Jessica defy thousands of years of training and orders from her superiors to give Leto a son? That’s how good he was.
Much in the preborn can go wrong. Seemed to me there were ways to deal with it if you were aware you needed to from an early age.
Wasn't he Leto III since Leto II Paul & Chani's first son was killed as an infant in a Sardaukar raid?
The legacy…of that beard!
Atreides is conquering people and territory through integration and acceptance, while the Harkonnen conquer through subjugation and genocide. One method of conquest works greatly better than others, we see that even in the real world. The Empires that conquer and integrate rather than oppress last the longest. Even today we see the affect of that. France and Britain are by no means innocent, and did oppress many people, but even still there was also plenty of places where the British and French were truly fair. Both Empires still exist, owning a lot of territory populated by peoples not native to their main Empire's hub. For example, France's longest border is actually shared with Brazil, not Germany or Italy. There have been multiple referendums held in French Guiana and they still vote to remain with France. Britain still has places like Bermuda and dozens of islands. The territories where France and Britain subjugated, enslaved, and oppressed broke away from the Empires often forcefully, while the places where they ruled with a light touch are still parts of them to this day.
I find the Ataides family very manipulative and they do quite explicitly use propaganda to try to manipulate the population of Arrakis in the first book. I'm also not entirely convinced that the Ataides are as benevolent as they say they are. Ask yourself the question, "In the first 3 books particularly, how often do we see the members of the Ataides family actually *be* loyal, dutiful, honest and dignified rather than just talk about it?" Yes they are less bad than the Harkonen family. But are they really that much less bad than the Corino? Yes, Irulan, Winnsisea and Feradin do very bad things but so does Paul, Alia and Jessica. Duke Leto I to me represents a charismatic leader that under all of his talk and bravado is not very competent and got caught up in his own hype. His kids are both pretty awful. Paul is a liar, manipulative, power hungry and in the second book abusive and genocidal. Alia is pretty bad too. Both of them lean more into the Baron's values than the Duke's. Alia explicitly so. The only good ones are Leto II who is acting for the good of humanity. Moneo being loyal to a fault, I guess. Teg is a hero and Odarade is kind of one but they show up until much later.
I want a woman that's as in love with me as Chani is of Ussel.
Duke Leto was indeed the greatest leader of the Caladan; I point to the expanded books of Dune by Frank Herbert's son. In the books of the three great houses of the Imperium we see each government compared and contrasted: what worked for one government, but also what failures each suffered. The greatest failure of the Atreides was also their greatest strength. Their humanity: something that the Baron hopes to stamp out. Each ruler of the Atreides bloodline going all the way back to Valorian Atreides; each sought to help their people, work beside their people, and slowly improve their people's lives by showing the best virtues of service. It's in the final book of the Dune series where we see all that the Atreides virtues manifested in the ghola of Duncan Idaho. Duncan learned throughout each life that what the greatest virtue was self-service. Duncan; became in the final book, another Kwizatz Haderach. But he became something more, a compassionate human being, someone unafraid of dying for his people. That, I think was the ultimate goal of Dune, to remake humanity into something better and more noble that it was before.
I see artreides propaganda branch did it's job admirably.
HOUSE OF DRAGONS????? When?
