EMPEROR SHADDAM CORRINO IV (Spice Wars and Fall of House Corrino in DUNE) EXPLORED

Ойын-сауық

Hey guys whats happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’re diving back into DUNE with a look at Shaddam Corrino IV, Emperor of the Known Universe until the rise of Maud'Dib.
Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV, born in the year 10119 AG, marked the culmination of the Corrino lineage as the eighty-first and final sovereign of the Corrino Empire. His tenure commenced in 10156 AG, characterized by the patricide of his father, Emperor Elrood IX, in collaboration with his confidant, Count Hasimir Fenring.
His reign was ultimately eclipsed by Paul Atreides in 10193 AG, consequent to the Arrakis Revolt-a pivotal moment many historians attribute to Shaddam IV's preoccupation with ceremonial courtly duties and the grandeur of his station. The emperor's legacy is further distinguished by his bold yet futile attempts to liberate his rule from the influential grasp of the Spacing Guild, the Bene Gesserit, and the powerful conglomerate CHOAM.
In a strategic alliance with Count Fenring, he spearheaded the ill-fated Project Amal on Ix, a twenty-year endeavor to synthesize an artificial variant of the vital spice melange. This venture, nearing fruition, was accompanied by the initiation of the Great Spice War aimed at annihilating the melange reserves of the Landsraad's Great Houses-an effort that also met with defeat.
Tragedy befell his consort, Anirul-a Bene Gesserit of concealed status-who perished in the same year as the conflict. Following his overthrow, Shaddam IV faced exile to Salusa Secundus, a planet previously notorious as a penal colony, along with Count Fenring and his progeny-five daughters named Irulan, Chalice, Rugi, Josifa, and Wensicia.
In this video, we’re going to his early life, the backstabbing and death that paved the way for his ascension, the great Spice Wars and war of the assassins, the rise of House Atreides, and finally the downfall of the once mighty House Corrino.

If there is a fictional equivalent to "The risk I took was calculated, but man am I bad at math..." it is Emperor Shaddam, I think Emperor Palpatine is honestly the only Emperor to make *dumber* choices as a ruler.

Shaddam didn't really make "dumb" choices though, it was a failure of imagination. He was too stuck in his view of the universe to imagine the numbers and might of the Fremen. His worst decision was trusting the Baron

Imagine Shaddam rolling in his grave knowing that Paul married his daughter but never gave her heirs, effectively blocking his bloodline from ever having a claim to the throne. He not only failed in his schemes but also obtained the worst possible outcome for himself and he totally deserved it.

He should have already known this, there was no more political power in the Corrinos when they decided to go to the dune for a summer vacation and were completely destroyed, Irulan is a literary asset, to explain the foolishness of the final script. In addition to the Pocahontas trope, remember, Paul is a tyrant, but he doesn't cuckold, because everyone prefers brunettes.

Shaddam had the worst luck ever. Not only did he literally give away Arrakis, a.k.a. The most valuable and most important planet in the universe to the house he sought to destroy, which basically is like giving your worst enemy a nuke hoping he won't notice backstab with a knife, but he also ended up a reign of emperors that lasted 10,000 years. Like, imagine being that guy that ended 10 millenia of emperors. And funniest of all, it was all the result of his own ego. He actually liked Leto Atreides and if not for his own interests, he even thought Leto to be the best possible husband for his daughters and possibly even the best successor to the Throne, since Shaddam didn't have sons. But, like, instead of that, he chose to chase his ego, and in less that a decade, lost literally everything. What a guy.

It wasn't luck, he tried a series of plays he thought would focus all power on him without having to negotiate with the various other powers in his universe and he lost everything. He got greedy and ambitious, he even resented his best ally, the count.

Not a developed character, Iurlan is also there to explain Puar's stupid statement at the end of the book. Just like the supposed plan of the Bene Gesserit to place their soon-to-be-born project boy on the throne, this also never seemed to make sense, in the film it gets worse, because it seems that they planned to marry Iurlan C with the kwisatz haderach, which basically makes no sense, since Paul was born a generation earlier than they planned. If this kwisatz haderach had been born as predicted, Irulan would be an old woman.

You know I find it kind of funny that he calls Paul's father a weak man when every other house wanted him to be the emperor and he got butthurt because he wasn't a good emperor. Because he was weak and he promoted his own soldiers not through Merit but just loyalty. And by his hand he effectively rendered the Surdukar weaker. To the point where they only had to rely on their name rather than their skills. But keep in mind their skills were still quite deadly and effective but when it came to the Fraeman they were weak.

I find the Shaddam in a hard position, not surprised his empire and rule failed. He was so restricted on what he can do with limited options. Whenever he tried a new scheme, there was something to happen that would prevent it. He reminded me of the later Holy Roman Emperors, who didn’t have much control of the Germans states but were really a figure head in name. Great video like always, your content is the best. Shaddam is one of my favorite characters in the Dune series.

Shaddam was mentally unstable.

This is assuming that the HRE was a centralized empire to begin with. Much like the empire of dune, the HRE was never designed to be a centralized empire like the French empire. The HRE emperors were not figure heads, they were essentially first among equals.

  • @elizabethjansen2684

@winzyl9546 no it wasn't intended to be but ended up that way. There was a schism and a separation with the "popes" of each faction excommunicated the other. When Rome fell the other party continued for centuries. So they did consolidate power intentionally and rather quickly too; Because it was a state religion. Much like what happened after Paul took the throne. Shaddam thought he was entitled to such a position. Because of history, the other nobles made darn sure he never quite had that much control. Power attracts the coruptible, and he was a pretty nasty person under his veneer. Almost as bad as the baron. Personally I think that's what fyed was like because of the baron's influence.

Not that it makes any sense. It is unreal and unrealistic in all terms. Irulan didn't even try to have a child herself, because PAUL said he would kill her, which gives an idea that the universe is a small thing, I think she would have tried, even if it didn't come to anything, (if the character had really a sense in the story) is silly, Because the character exists to explain how Paul destroyed millennia of a dynasty, it's not supposed to make sense. And of course, if you finished the whole shitty series, you know that it's about Chani's immortal love for Paul, that is, everything in the end is about a brunette you fall in love with in the desert, looking from afar, Dune looks like a silly romance of teenager.

I’ve been obsessed with Dune since I was 15 in 1995. I’ve read all the books numerous times, watched the films and tv series numerous times and have listened the audiobook versions a few times. I still think it’s one of the greatest sci-fi books of all time. But, I am beyond disappointed with the casting of Christopher Walken as the emperor. Not only does it nit match the look of the emperor in the books, but the age of the actor is just so off that it’s painful. It reminds me of of how bad the decision to as to cast Duncan Idaho with Aquaman. These two decisions are painful, especially because DV is such a fan of the books and such a great person to bring them to the big screen. Why would he make these two terrible decisions? I mean, I understand that he has casting directors, but he must have final say, right? He had to know that while Christopher Walken was a genius actor in films like the Deer Hunter, his age alone, makes him a poor choice for the emperor. Just like the decision to cast Aquaman as Duncan Idaho was a terrible decision. Particularly because Duncan Idaho is so key to the long-term story. Why would you cast somebody who is a poor actor and not good at nuance? I’m sure I will enjoy the second film as much as the first but little things like this truly disappoint fans of Dune.

I assume you weren't too happy with part two. I can understand that for people that were already into Dune before part 1 was announced. But I think what DV doing here is quite interesting. In the book, Paul has a vision where he is the one killing the Baron just like in the movie. I find this to be set in the same universe, just if things went slightly different. Except for stuff like the age of the emperor's actor, of course.

I do wonder if Shaddam's actions were the primary reason the Sadukar became softer or was it many things over the last mabe 100 years and his actions were simply the last straw? Like a group of people who've been some of the greatest fighters in the Empire for some 10,000 years all of a sudden became less useful within 40+ years but idk. Im sorry that this question might seemingly have nothing to do with this video, but if the Bene Gesserit were so involved with their Kwisatz Hadarak project; if they attempted to weaken the very Imperial Family to facilitate it, and then bullied the Emperor of the Known Universe to help safeguard Atreides, how were they later surprised that Jessica had born Leto a son? They sermed to have eyes everywhere, and even Sisters who were not openly known as members of the BG were manipulating things, so how, if the Atreides heir was so critical, and Jessica had been instructed to make a girl for them, did they go nearly two decades without being aware? Leto was popular; I'd bet other Houses were thinking of trying to marry a daughter to Paul, and solodify a union with the rising star of Atreides, or at least there would have been buzz that Paul had been born, yet the ever-alert Sisterhood never knew until their leader heard sbout it at court? It's also kind of weird that, after she birthed Paul, that Jessica waited so long to produce that girl. She and Leto were still close, and I feel like it could have maybe worked if they heard THAT buzz, but then missed the Paul buzz. Hell, it's weird that they didn't know about Paul, but had sent Jessica to Leto to have a child. Were they not concerned that a beautiful, seductive BG hadn't had ANY child with the noble she was sent to? The Harkonnen heir was already in his 20s; would they have wanted to wait another X years for an Atreides girl to be able to breed with him? Yada yada, this was a fun video. I learned stuff I wasn't aware of, and it sort of helped illustrate why the Emperor might be paranoid about Atreides. It never seemed, too me, that Leto had actually seemed preparing to topple the throne, so why destroy him? Shaddam could have had Irulan marry Paul, preventing the Maud'dib Crisis, but nope. Still, very glad i watched, and learned a number of things! Thank you!😊
