I noticed they have a resemblance to the creatures in Pitch Black. They're head dress is like the head of the creatures from Pitch Black. Also, they are bloodthirsty just like the handlers.

They should not reboot Battlestar again. They should make a spin off of a Battlestar with another crew with a lost battle fleet. Battlestar Olympia would be a cool name.

It's a fascinating idea to create a "black body" type star that isn't actually a black hole; a star that emits its energy outside the visible range. IIRC, such stars actually exist but they aren't common. The most common IR-emitting stars are red dwarfs and they DO have a faint visible light. The closest you'll really get to a "black sun" is a *brown* dwarf, which is a planet that attempted to ignite fusion but failed due to insufficient mass. Most light these theoretical "stars" emit is in the IR band. The camera effectively INVERTED the pattern of light, so that the most intense IR radiation appears black and the absence of it is white. As a visual effect it's really striking, and does make Geidi Prime into the sort of alien machine-world that the books described it as. Plants that could harness IR photons instead of visible light photons for photosynthesis would be truly alien. That itself might have been worth seeing, maybe in supplementary material. One other thing: The Black Sun is a very important Nazi symbol and it was readily adopted by other fascist nations in the early 1930s as well. The entire concept reminds me of an old anti-fascist song by The Police, "Invisible Sun." Its lyrics probably do a good job of describing life on Geidi Prime for your average peasant: It's dark all day and it glows all night Factory smoke and acetylene light I face the day with my head caved in Looking like something that the cat brought in And they're only going to change this place By killing everybody in the human race They would kill me for a cigarette But I don't even wanna die just yet There has to be an invisible sun It gives its heat to everyone There has to be an invisible sun That gives us hope when the whole day's done...

In my first year of Latin class during my high school years, we had a whole ass unit on Roman gladiatorial games, even watching a movie of the Priscus vs Verus fight. Watching this arena fight on the big screen was an absolute joy to my heart. Having the Roman gladiatorial knowledge still bouncing around my head truly enhanced my viewing of Feyd's fight and the Harkonnen guards.

I believe when Frank Herbert spoke of three books he was referring to his original plan to write a trilogy that would encompass all of the story of the first book. As the story goes it was the executive at Chilton who recommended that Herbert release all three books as one mega book simply called Dune. I do not believe he was referring to Messiah or Children of Dune. Furthermore fan reaction to Messiah was terrible at the time of release. Why? Because the hero they loved was revealed to be history’s greatest villain. Herbert was correct in assuming the public “didn’t get it” by and large. That being said I feel Villenueve ruined Dune 2 by planting the seeds for Dune: Messiah with the Chani character. The impact of the finale is lessened and cheapened. I get it though: Villenueve’s calculation is the general audience are “normies” and/or dumb. Therefore they must be spoon fed the themes lest they reject the whole trilogy. Sad.

The movie needed another hour. Needed. So many stuff just thrown in without explanation, just referencing, no tie to the story, just production design and costumes. Pity, so much stuff is too notch.

I was struck by the very parallels you identified here when I first watched the movie (and loved it). One other detail that struck me occurred outside of the arena; the salute given by the Harkonnen subjects. If I am not mistaken, it is the same exact gesture of loyalty shown towards Big Brother in the movie adaptation of Orwell's 1984. I canot help but think that this was the director's nod to Orwell's timeless warning about the evils of fascism.

the arena was pretty much exactly the same as the (at the time) epitome of human culture, the romans. i think they actually made feyd a LOT more heroic in the film than previously portrayed. sadistic of course, but he had a sense of honor that his uncle did not.
