I always thought that it was Duke Leto Atriedes that messed up the Bene Gesserit breeding program, by giving Paul resistance to Bene Gesserit control. One awesome skill that you missed was the fact that Paul was "triple specced". He received Bene Gesserit training from his mom ... and Duke Leto had started him in Mentat training from a very young age. The Mentat training combined with massive spice intake basically made him a Navigator (precongnition). Paul did not realize he was getting Mentat training (as was the custom). I think the Mentat training messed everything up, it gave Paul the ability to calculate which path he needed to take.

Or the fact that the Bene Gesserit plan actually seemed to focus more on the Harkonnen's than on the Atreides. Jessica, the baron's daughter, was to produce a daughter with Duke Leto that would have been inbred to her first cousin Feyd-Ruatha Harkonnen. Meaning that their plan ultimately assumed a predominantly Harkonnen Kwisatz Haderach.

@@jpgduff - Actually, it's quite explicit that the breeding program spanned the Landsraad and the Bene Gesserit. Atreides and Harkonnen were just the two most crucial lineages. We also know that Duke Leto was a cousin of Emperor Shaddam IV. But the culmination of the plan assumed an Atreides daughter marrying the male heir of Harkonnen. That actually did happen, only in reverse. Jessica was a Harkonnen by birth and Leto was the Atreides heir. How controllable the Kwisatz Haderach would be had less to do with genes than with how they were managed. After all, Jessica herself proved that Harkonnen genes do not make one any more obedient. The real issue was the odd and ill-considered absence of more Bene Gesserit operatives in both Houses. They seemed unprepared to manage members of either House. Consider that it took them 15 years to get around to giving Paul a close-up examination.

Nerd Cookies is right that when Leto II first took over he destroyed the qanats reversing the terraforming for a time but after 3500 years of his rule in God Emperor of Dune Arrakis was terraformed with running water and all the worms were gone. He himself maintained a large desert area around his palace and he alone kept a secret store of the spice melange which he parsimoniously doled out to keep a hold on the various factions. When he was assassinated it was his water death that released the sand trout from his dying body that once again would begin the desertification of Arrakis. The future worms would contain a pearl of his essence within each of them.

Atreides means "sons of or descendants of Atreus." In Greek and also Anatolian mythology, Atreus was grandson of Tantalos (Zeus's son). Tantalos was king of Lydia (ancient name of eastern part of Aegean Region in modern Turkey). He disrespected Olympian Gods and so he and his entire bloodline was cursed. In literature, "Atreus Curse" has always been a very popular metaphor which is used to describe "eternal unrest and tragedy of a family, especially a powerful noble family." In Ancient Greek, Atreus means "fearless." It is really both relevant and ironic that Electra (you know, Greek theatrical tragedy character and name mother of Carl Jung's "Electra Complex") is an "Atreides" in Greek myths. Because she is the granddaughter of Atreus. And she is the one who has "mommy issues" with her mother Clytemnestra. That is why Carl Jung named his proposed psychological phenomenon as "Electra Complex." FH himself said in one of his interviews that he was largely interested in Jungian psychology. And in Dune novels, it is Alia Atreides who has severe mommy issues. She is a relative of Electra in the pool of fictional characters of world literature.

In Frank Herbert's (not his son), it was mentioned that House Atreides is the successor of House Atreus from Greek Mythology and ancient history. Unfortunately, it was a cursed house as members such as the Greek King Agamemnon of Mycenae (Iliad) was murdered by his wife and her lover. Agamemnon's son Orestes took revenge and murdered his mother and her lover. For matricide, Orestes was cursed by the gods. In some versions of the story, nothing happened to him and in others he was acquitted by the goddess Athena. In the Dune series, Paul and his children were cursed. The God Emperor's Golden Path was to break the curse and to allow humanity to survive/evolve, unfortunately it wasn't peaceful as the Honored Matres (remnants of the Fish Speakers, Bene Gesserit, and Tleilaxu females) from the Scattering wreaked havoc. It's interesting that the Hawk symbol was used in Dune when the traditional symbol of House Atreus and Mycenae were a pair of Lionesses. The Lions Gate is a famous landmark as it was set at the main entrance of the royal House Atreus citadel at Mycenae. Around 1250 BC, European lions were common in Greece. And to add another twist, the descendants of House Atreus and future House Atreides are living in Greece today. When the DNA of Cheddar Man who died 9,000 years ago in what is now England was sequenced, his descendants were found living in the area.

You are wrong. The Brian Herbert books are not fan fiction. They are canon. He is a writer, the son of Frank Herbert, Inherenter of the estate, and found notes after his father died concerning the future of the saga. There is no reason to think that his son is lying. To say so is a cynical view. And if he is, then I guess Frank didn't set a good example as a father. I don't believe that would be so. Sure, Brian Herbert is not as good a writer, but so what. He added to the universe and completed the series in a satisfying way.
