The Last Orangutans of Sumatra | 1000 Days For The Planet | Documentary Central
Ойын-сауық
As deforestation for oil palm production shows no sign of slowing down, scientists do what they can to halt the carnage and rehabilitate the last surviving orangutans on the island of Sumatra.
1000 Days for the Planet is the latest project from world-renowned scientist and UN Ambassador for the Environment, Jean Lemire. Lemire explores the world from his 50-foot sailboat, the Sedna IV, stopping everywhere from Alaska to the Philippines. Along the way, the series reveals the extraordinary beauty of the planet whilst helping us understand how our living environments function, and ultimately ponder the great challenges we all face.
Exploring life from ocean depths to mountain peaks, and from vast savannahs to the heart of the jungle, this series is beautiful and challenging. 1000 Days for the Planet is a journey around our vast planet to discover life’s extraordinary diversity and to bear witness to its fragile balance.

Well now isnt that easy for you to say judging these poor people that live on less than $3 per day from your wealthy Western country which knows ALL ABOUT GREED. I'd love to see you get off your comfortable sofa and kitchen full of food and l would force you to live in the abject poverty there people live in for at least 6 months. Then we would see how far your sympathies for these useless apes go when you have a chance at some economic opportunity from these plantations. It's you who makes me sick,! You care more about the welfare of these fifthy beasts than that of the starving children in these countries.. So only white kids from the US or the UK are entitled to generational wealth? Let alone the orangutans, they even don't wanna think about His peoples.. I terrified too about workers that beats and shots the orangutans they were just "Puppets" who droves by money.. Doesn't have heart or personality.
I'll never understand as long as I love how humans can be so mean😡It breaks my heart to see these Beautiful Orangutans killed or hurt!

. Do you notice only people from the west are up here whining about these useless apes and how cruel these locals are? If your kids were hungry and you could feed them and pay your bills for a year, all you had to do was take one of these "pests" babies or starve? Guaranteed your shooting an orangutan. Where is your concern for the children of this country who live in abject poverty without the basics in life like food, medical care etc. ? Or are you only concerned with these apes that have clearly outlived their usefulness? It's. A very complex problem and I'm not going to deny the children of Indonesia economic opportunity over a bunch of hideous apes.

The vast majority of people on this planet are carnists, and engage in exploitation of, torture of, and violence against other animals.
As consumers we have the right to know exactly what goes in to the making of the products on our shelves. Not just the price, and the ingredients but the business practices themselves. Couldn't there be a QR system or something so that when I buy products I can scan them and choose the lesser of evils? IDK. Like I realize that palm oil is in almost everything at the store but I would rather pay a few cents more for something that wasn't contributing to the brutal torture of an endangered species.

For the murder of orangutans and for the cruel treatment of orangutans, the death penalty is needed. The Indonesian authorities should adopt such a law. Orangutans need to be protected from human cruelty.

Except "make a living" these days is living extremely luxuriously compared to what humans actually need, even for "poor" people. Orangutans get all their food and shelter from the trees, and humans can do the same. If you want more than that, then you better make damn sure it doesn't negatively harm the environment or other peaceful and intelligent creatures, but humans of course just don't give a flying fuck. Can't wait until humans are extinct.
I cannot watch but listening is even harder. Inhumans will be the death of all life unless they are stopped
The sad thing is that the farmers would eventually be homeless or themselves starve if they let the orangutans destroy their crops.
So Pitiful 😢🐅🐘🦏🦧
Why the Sumatra people are cruel with orang utan ???
I knew it was bad but this film shows the cruelty of inhuman green
Bajeebuzz Christmas! How could someone do this to such an innocent creature? I shouldn't be surprised as the horrors we inflict on each other for a mere difference of opinion or lifestyle is every bit as shocking. What is so fundamentally wrong with the human species that tolerance is a complete alien concept? I hope the world can survive the nasty beings that are destroying her.

This world would be wonderful, if people weren't so awful.
If the situation on Borneo is so desperate, why don't you reintroduce orangutans to Vietnam, Cambodia and other parts of Asia where they lived not so far ago till the last Ice Age? It's plenty of forests there, good environment and far more area than on Borneo and Sumatra. Vietnam and Cambodia themselves have around 50% of their area (or even more) covered by forests. Sounds like a heaven.

The forests in those places have been totally decimated, and were never even nearly as rich as the Borneo forests in the first place. Malaysian forests could possibly support some, but they're getting cleared rapidly too. Java perhaps, but the forest situation there is even worse. And those forest percentages can be very misleading, because it's not necessarily as well-connected, as productive, or as low as the ones the orangutans have adapted to. If you look at the two places via Maps, you'll see a very clear difference. The evidence that they lived there as recently as you mention is also scant, and definitely not a proven fact. I'm not against the idea of it, but I don't think it's workable, and we should rather focus on getting all the deranged lunatics who are driving deforestation on Borneo to stop, although I don't really have any hope anymore at this stage myself. 100% pessimistic and misanthropic by now, don't really see how humanity will even manage to prevent their own extinction eventually.

These are apes, not monkeys; specifically they are great apes (Hominidae), just like us. Knowing the names and characters of orangutans is not uncommon for people studying them, because just like humans they are quite distinct and have very distinct personalities. As for the country, this is the island of Sumatra (it literally says it in the title of the video), which is part of Indonesia. The forests are being cleared to make room for palm oil plantations, totally destroying primordial forests that will take thousands of years to recover, all so that humans can guzzle and otherwise use palm oil in a variety of products, and keep endlessly multiplying. If this doesn't make you sick to your stomach, you simply haven't realized just how evil humans are yet. A totally miserable failure of a species, or rather a pathetic excuse for one.
What is that greed a function of there I ask? I would suggest it starts with the letter "C" and ends with the letter "M." You cannot tell me that the global south would choose to destroy it's own ecosystem for the sake of it-- no it is because they're desperate to catch up to western civilization which is itself a function of the global exploitation, and neo-colonialism imposed on the global south that ends up creating this cannibalistic nature to destroy in order to create. Also, the creation of capital through this ecological calamity is not being equally distributed, obviously!
Put the hundreds, if not thousands, that you got in captivity back in the jungle!! But no, because you make more $$ keeping those and CLAIMING they're endangered. I call bull💩
