Chris Jordan hmmm, interesting theory, like maybe she's imagining him being there and kinda serving as her 'good/moral conscience' throughout the game. Could explain why she seems so hell bent on revenge, if those people killed Joel then she would obviously have a reason to 'kill every last one of them' as she put it. Plus, notice how they chose to frame the shot with Joel walking in, eclipsed momentarily in white light before we see his full figure? Could be alluding to something, or some sort of symbolism (or it could all be a red herring, still too soon to know what they have in store for us)

Joel can't be dead and here's why: 1. If he is in her head, why do WE see him walk into the house 2. We see him stop for a second and look at the dead guy in the bathroom 3. He is holding a gun. 4. They would never kill him off-screen, in a flashback or in the beginning of the game. And this must be pretty early on. Not after everything the player went through with him in the first game. If he was in her head, why would he be carrying a gun? He's ready to fight. (he hears her play the guitar and knows she is OK so he relaxes a little). Why would he stop and look at the dead body? He is scanning the area, and is curious to find out how many she took out). Killing him off so early in the game isn't smart because it would ruin the narrative. Imagine being all hyped about the game, then realising the game intro is almost like the first one but now Joel dies. People would be too shocked/mad/sad to be able to take in whats happening. Having him die in a flash back in the middle of the game would also not be smart because his absent from the gameplay would let the player know he probably is dead, and this will build up the hype for when we finally see his death, which (because of the hype) will be underwhelming. An off-screen death for lead character is unthinkable.

Anyway, he could be a product of ellie's mind. If you played batman arkham knight you will realise. Besides there are a lot of movies in which imaginary characters interact with de main one and with the enviroment. Anyway i dont think Joel is dead.

I think people's theory's are right with Joel being a figment of Ellie's imagination, just the line he says in the trailer and they way he appears, Ellie wants to wipe out the firefly for killing Joel. Fireflys are are the new bandits as when Joel killed Marlene and saved Ellie everything they fought to accomplish was for,nothing and the purpose of the fireflys was essentially over.

@Mighty Megatron naw apparently she wanted to stick to the more original plot. When Niel came to her with his changes to the plot, because he wanted to "stay true to the character," she had reservations. Eventually he got everyone on board and it was ultimately his vision.

I specialise in games design and it was pretty clear to me that some elements of the game were quite loosely strung together 2. Half of the trailer didn't appear in the game. Btw, never complained about the story. Just said it was clearly quite different. Get a grip. It's just a game. It can't get as unnecessarily offended as you apparently have.

I waited so long thinking there wasn't gonna be a part two and its finally here. I'm so freaking hyped for this game.

I bought an Xbox One S last month.... buyer's remorse just hit me hard.

This is fascinating to see AFTER you finish the game. Kind of like an Easter egg for you once it’s all over. Would’ve been interesting to see how they could’ve weaved it into the gameplay at some point, also.

That Joel in the trailer might be her imagination. I mean.. he doesnt have a strand of gray hair (could be cuz he's walking through a dark house) plus he looks WAY to clean.

Wilson Gang there was a bloody machete in the floor next to her... also it's not the first time I seen it done- where the subconscious form and explains/guides and does things for you only to realize later or end game that it was you all along/ u were alone trying to cope with what happened and that was the only way she would manage to continue to survive. her minds mechanism acted as a fail safe to keep her going.. after what Ellie's gone thru- heck I buy it. this is gonna be game of the year for sure. also keep in mind this is a theatrical trailer.

It doesn't matter how many times I watch, I will never get bored of it, it's just spectacular. I don't know how people can dislike this. I even learned the song on guitar xD

Ladies and gentleman, in a world of re-cycled assets, buggy, annually-released garbage triple-A titles void of imagination and quality craftsmanship…. that just money grab from naive children and teenagers. Games like "The Last of Us" are all thats left of what gaming is truly about. SUpport Naughty Dog and their processes… BUY THIS GAME.

The ideology here is, gaming is more than money and volume. Its about creating something that when you leave this world, your happy you played, and as a game dev… happy you stayed true to yourself and designed. Gaming is an art/lifestyle… not a cheap hustle. Naughty Dog understands this and it reflects in their finished products.

THEORY TIME BOYS: the fireflies try to come and get ellie back revealing that the fireflies are really partially maddened by their quest to find a cure one which doesnt exist and they cant use ellie to create one but they hunt for her to get the “cure” anyways and now ellie and joel are the last survivors of joels brothers town, the fireflies slaughtered them all and now they go for revenge.
