Queen singer Freddie Mercury was fiercely protective of his privacy, and he continued to guard it jealously even as his health succumbed to the ravages of AIDS - but as guitarist Brian May recently revealed, Mercury's bandmates were privileged with glimpses of their frontman's grueling final struggle. May looked back on Mercury's final days in a recent interview with the Sunday Times (via the Daily Telegraph), revealing that before the disease claimed Mercury, it started taking pieces of his body -- including most of his foot, which had to be amputated.
"The problem was actually his foot," May told the Times. "Tragically there was very little left of it. Once, he showed it to us at dinner. And he said, 'Oh Brian, I'm sorry I've upset you by showing you that.' And I said, 'I'm not upset, Freddie, except to realize you have to put up with all this terrible pain.'"
As May went on to point out, Mercury's death occurred shortly before major advancements in AIDS research led to the introduction of drug cocktails that help stave off the disease, allowing the diagnosed the possibility of long-term management - and helping prevent further agony for patients. Admitting it's difficult to know how close Mercury came to seeing those medications become available, May stressed that he stays focused on the legacy he left behind. "He missed by just a few months. If it had been a bit later he would still have been with us, I'm sure," said May. "You can't do 'what if,' can you? You can't go there because therein lies madness."
It's worth noting that May has publicly expressed his unhappiness with the overall tone of the interview, which focused on the sensationalistic aspects of Queen and Mercury's story rather than the project May sat down with the Times to discuss - the Queen in 3-D retrospective book he painstakingly assembled for release this year. "This woman came into my house, pretended she was a fan and was going to write a nice piece about the book, as agreed; then went away and wrote this pathetic sensationalistic drivel. I'm angry and disgusted," wrote May, pointing out that he'd agreed to give the Times the exclusive on the book, including any photos they wanted to run - and they "used just two of them, one of them reproduced not much bigger than a postage stamp; the rest of the piece illustrated with recycled ordinary snaps from God knows where."
While May didn't single out the earlier quotes as a reason for his ire, he did take umbrage with the piece's focus on what the headline described as "the debauchery of the Freddie Mercury years." Vowing never to give the Times "the time of day" from here on out, he assured fans that the book has nothing to do with the story presented by the article. "I spent over two years fashioning this into the first book of its kind - EVER - a biography of a band from the inside illustrated with my own photographs - and in 3-D, with a fabulous viewer to bring them to life in three dimensions," May insisted. "It's honest, goes deep and is tasteful and dignified (I have been told!) but nobody reading this awful amateurish piece of journalistic opportunism would know it."
Freddie Mercury spent his last days at his house, Garden Lodge 1 Logan Place in Kensington, London. The singer who died from bronchial pneumonia from AIDS, spent his last days with his former partner, Mary Austin, who continues to live at the home. Mercury was diagnosed with HIV in 1987 but kept his condition private until he released a public statement just a little over 24 hours before he passed away on November 24, 1991. Mercury was just 45 years old. The outer walls of Garden Lodge in 1 Logan Place have become a shrine to Mercury, with fans paying tribute by covering the walls with messages for the legendary late singer.

Freddie is one of those artists whose memory will never fade, even after his death over 30 years ago he is still as important in the music world as he was when he was alive. A very brave man who carried on working for as long as he possibly could, a unique performer who will never be replicated.

I was fortunate enough to have spent 5 days with him and the guys in 1985. We wrote up until the year before he passed. I miss him beyond measure and I treasure every moment both face-to-face and in writing. Only a handful of ppl in my life knew of our friendship and it is only since Boh Rha was released did I share my story and I've written a few snippets of information about our relationship on YT. It meant so much to me that I didn't capitalize on it because he was so private and I respected that. I think that is why he continued to keep me in his life beyond that initial meeting in Melbourne where they played. He knew I was like Switzerland. Bless you M.
I am a 53 yr old grandma and to see all these young people keeping Freddie's spirit alive gives me such hope for our future. Bless you all.

RIP Freddie. You are missed by so many. You will forever be a legend and in my heart. What a wonderful human being he was. I loved the fact that when he was touring and took time off, he spent it with his parents and sister. He never talked about the tours while visiting his beloved family.

Freddie died before I was born. I’m just a young teenage girl, but I’ve been a fan of Queen ever since I was 3. They were the first band I loved. Although I wasn’t alive at the same time as Freddie, I miss him. RIP Freddie. We all love you so much, and you will never be forgotten. Thank you for making music. ❤️

Мой муж при росте 186см весил 39 кг, его привязывали к кровати, так как он постоянно хотел встать и была опасность что он весь переломается. До самой смерти он находился в создании . Он очень любил слушать Фредди.

Яркая и не тухнущая звезда на небосклоне шоубизнеса и человечества в целом. Волшебный голос, величайшая харизма и энергетика, человек большой души... Смелый, сильный и энергичный. Даже перед смертью он шел гордо, понимая, что дни сочтены... Не смотря на его сексуальную ориентацию, его родителям было и есть чем и кем гордиться. Сострадание к людям, благородие и ценность человеческого отношения привилось родителями, которое он нес в себе до конца (что отражалось в текстах его песен. Legends like Freddie Mercury will never die
Such a terrible desease. Painful to see this. I feel so sorry for him he went through this, and with him many others. He has a strong spirit. It helped him to perform till the last minute. And the beautiful thing is, his unique spirit never dies.
He was a man of courage and determination. He showed his true heart even in his last days. Truly a legend and sadly missed
You could tell how much he changed when he got diagnosed. The skin on his face sunk. Poor Freddie. 😢

I was 18 when he passed ..48 hours later I had my first daughter ...we sang queen songs all the way through Labor... It hurt a lot ...my dad raised me right an then I lost my dad a couple of years later.... I listen to queen everytime I miss my dad ❤..im thankful that aids / HIV is now put out there to educate young people ....

It made me teary too. No one deserves that and it sickens me to think that he suffered like he did. I didn't know much about AIDS until the movie. It's unfathomable.

If he did not accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior which is the ONLY way to Heaven then he died and went to Hell to be with his god Satan who he worshipped when he was alive.
I just want to hug him and tell him thank you for leaving us with the tremendous gift of his voice and performances! His spirit and music lives on!

Freddy gave so much to the world, of himself and of his love, through music. One of the most beautiful are his songs with Montserrat Caballe. He is truly a legend. Great love to Freddy. I will always remember him saying, "I still love you"
This brought me to tears. Freddie was one of a kind. There will never be another Freddie. He makes you happy to watch him perform to this day. Thankful for videos so we can enjoy him forever.
His music and his personality is what everyone should remember. He was a fantastic man who broke loads of barriers and I wish for his music to still be playing years to come 💕

Артистичный, добрый, щедрый, ранимый, любимый многими людьми из разных стран. Но никто не спас его.😭Вот Господь и призвал его к себе. О, Боже, как же тяжело и горько ему было жить, осознавая, что умирает так рано, и многое ещё смог бы сделать. Так устроена жизнь. Порой очень печально. Вот чему нужно учить в школах. И с раннего возраста говорить о смерти, о важности жизни, о своей задаче и роли в ней. Прости нас, Фредди, но люди и после смерти не дают тебе покоя тем, что плачут, когда смотрят и слушают. Потому, что боль в душе, как-будто кусок из сердца вырезали - вот что значит твоя потеря. Любим, слушаем, наслаждаемся голосом, фото, видео!!! Это была Богемская рапсодия. Так я открыла для себя Фредди Меркьюри.

He was suffering from a terrible disease, while knowing he would be judged if people found out, but he managed somehow to be happy and funny most of the time, and yet sometimes, we complain about small things and get offended by anything. He is such an inspiration knowing what he was going through...he seems so strong and full of life till the end. Love you Freddie 💕
