@@caiomesquita268 I found an article in the Atlantic, but it appears to be written so the interview wouldnt have laughed as far as we know " The Charges Are Completely Unfounded, says director M. Night Shyamalan to Indie Movies Online: "You're coming at me, the one Asian filmmaker who has the right to cast anybody I want, and I'm casting this entire movie in this color blind way where everyone is represented. I even had one section of the Earth kingdom as African American, which obviously isn't in the show, but I wanted to represent them, too! And I fought like crazy to have the pronunciation of the names to go back to the Asian pronunciation. So you say 'Ahng' instead of 'Aaang' because it's correct. It's not 'I-rack,' it's 'ee-Rock.' I'm literally fighting for all this. And who's getting blamed? ME! This is incredible. And so it's infuriating, this stigmatization, that the first word about the most culturally-diverse movie of all time is this accusation. And here's the irony of it, this has nothing to do with the studio system. I had complete say in casting. So if you need to point the racist finger, point it at me, and if it doesn't stick, then be quiet."

Sokka is a guy they forgot to write's personality, instead of a combo between amazing planner, and goofy tag along. Katara I'd the one who learns water bending easier than Aang, and is always calm instead of getting angry all the time during the first season. So, to summarize, we have a scared child, a block of wood, and a lady who for some reason only speaks to deliver exposition, and to act calm. So the opposite of the animated ones. I swear, the best way to deal with this movie is just to say it is a showing of the ember island version of these events, and retcon from there.

  • @pearperapare

To be fair, the pronunciation of "Yin and Yang" was correct. Something the showrunners did in TLA, and which Shyamalan went on record as saying he wanted to avoid, was Americanizing the pronunciations of words to make them more easily digestible for a Western audience. He was hoping to make it sound more authentic. Of course they then went and made the Inuit-inspired Water Tribe white and the traditionally-pale and pseudo-Japanese Fire Nation Indian, so I guess authenticity wasn't that fucking important.

Chronos it’s because of two things. 1) the architecture and 2) the style of governing. They all speak the same language but fire is based on Japan. Even I noticed this. Hell they actually look Japanese. (Which is really hard to do and is about the only one to actually make their appearance asain not just a white person in Asia). Also some dark skinned ppl do have blue eyes. So it’s possible that they used that for their appearance. Also they bend water. Being technical isn’t exactly a strong point with the show. But they are based on Inuit culture. Specifically those from Canada i believe. So it actually fits. The reason they all speak Chinese is because it was most likely easier for all four nations to speak the same language than making four different languages and deal with language barriers.

I think the issue with the cuts in this movie is that there’s a severe lack of establishing/exiting shots for any given scene. Like when you cut away from a conversation to another conversation, you might get a wide shot for the last line in conversation A before cutting to conversation B. That hardly ever happens in this movie, so it’s always confusing how it jumps around. I didn’t realize how much we take that for granted in most movies, but it’s an important detail.

It's honestly impressive how this movie took one of the most important episodes of the series, when they find the Earthbenders being taken by the Fire Nation and they're taken to a METAL ship in the middle of the ocean [which is designed to break their spirits since they're nowhere near their element] and just completely and utterly missed the meaning of it. This is the episode that truly shows you how spirit-breaking and demoralizing the Fire Nation can be and, in this movie, they're literally just under house arrest pretty much and no one cared to fight back because of reasons.
