The Last Airbender: An Abomination

Фильм және анимация

Long ago, a director tried to adapt a popular cartoon. There were no survivors.
Avatar as a franchise was forever haunted. Many chose to forget. But not me. I chose to suffer.

    The kid who plays Ong, Noah Ringer, actually acted a lot like cartoon Aang in real life, pulling pranks on his costars behind the scenes and being a fun, light hearted kid. Shyamalan must have made him act all dour and emotionless on purpose.

    The sad thing about the Netflix adaptation is, from what I heard, the original creators of Avatar were involved and wanted it to be set after the original cartoon's ending, in a different period of time, with different conflicts, when everyone was more mature. Netflix said, "no way, we're remaking the original series", then the creators said "k, bye".

    Just as clarity: Aang’s refusal to kill Ozai in the series was, in fact, perfectly in line with what Avatar Yangchen told him. Yangchen in her time in the original series put aside her Air Nomad principles for the role of the Avatar, because she knew Air Nomad culture would still carry on after her transgression, since the airbenders were still around back then. Aang in his time was the last airbender; if he sacrificed his principles to kill Ozai, the culture of the Air Nomads would die with his transgression. Figured that was worth bringing up to explain the end of Aang’s fight with Ozai. Edit (four days later): The Netflix series is going to absolutely make Aang kill Ozai. With how poorly he’s written in that show, they’d NEVER go that deep with Aang’s ideals as an Air Nomad. Or hell, with how everything wants to make villains sympathetic these days, Ozai might just straight up turn good through some asinine Care Bear means.

  • @Mariodash23

    @Mariodash23

    Ай бұрын

    If they actually tried to redeem Ozai, I would've actually vomited from that. Zuko's entire character arc is my favorite part of the show, and to have it ruined by going "Aw, Ozai wasn't all that bad" when he berated, belittled, and burnt his fucking face before he was even old enough to be in high school? That would give me the Black Death.

  • @coca_0146

    @coca_0146

    Reedeeming Ozai could work since he is still alive by the end of the show you could have Zuko, now the fire lord, confront him jail etc. But it would require *really good writers* and (like Zuko's redemption) they would have to develop this plot line acroos multiple seasons. So Netflix ain't doing that and if they try to they will fuck it up. @@Mariodash23

    It's because nobody knows what to do with it since it's a story that's already finished. They made a sequel series with a new Avatar and all it did was just ruin the original in a Disney Star Wars-esque way, the live action reboot looks about on par with the Cowboy Bebop remake. The only thing that sounds even remotely interesting are the comics that continue the story of Aang and the Gaang after the series concluded. But even those aren't that good since they're not written by the same writers who made the original show, and they barely explore any of the interesting shit you'd think these characters would be up to after the war was over. It's obvious the lack of direction in this franchise comes from the fact none of the original creators are involved anymore, so it just loops around in circles and we keep getting the same shit over and over again since they're too scared to do anything original. Oh well, maybe all the astroturfing with Kyoshi might finally pay off and they can do something with her.

    @@nagger8216 I think your premise is wrong. I enjoyed Korra, and fail to understand how it ruined the original. Korra has problems to be sure, but it wasn't bad, and the worldbuilding around what happens to your fantasy world after 100 years of social and technological process is something most settings fucking IGNORE because of fantasy medieval stasis. The problem is when people come on and think an 'adaptation' is sufficient and don't understand that different mediums have different strengths and weaknesses. Books, movies, TV shows, audio dramas, comics... all, perhaps shockingly, do different things well. You can't just lift and shift an animated story into live action. Something has to give to take advantage of what live action does well vs what animation does well. And sometimes, like with Avatar, you paint yourself into a corner because a lot of what makes it good is tied up in things that are easier to convey through animation but come off as awkward in live action. Executive meddling also plays a role--see the Star Wars stories and how they all tend to be just referential stories trying to guess at what fans want to see, falling into the 'average' and choking the franchise with a torrent of product that just exhausts viewers.

It was only surpassed by a dozen earth benders doing their stupid dance routine only to throw a rock the size of a pillow at them _WHEN, AGAIN, THEY ARE LITERALLY SURROUNDED EVERYWHERE BY EARTH,_ unlike the original episode where they were trapped on a metal ship so this couldn’t happen because the Fire Nation in the original series weren’t completely brain dead. @@WolfvineGaming That's because someone in the chain of command for this movie had his cognitive functions compromised by consuming too much Marxist dogma. When he saw the metal prison scene in the animated series he didn't connect the dots to realize the earth benders couldn't bend their way to freedom for lack of earth. He only saw white people oppressing non-white people. And the only thing that can liberate non-white people (who Marxist dogma declares have no agency and cannot speak for themselves) is if a Marxist stands up and speaks on their behalf. He thus projected himself into the scene as the "liberator of the oppressed masses". That's also the reason he took the scene from Katara and gave it to Aang. Because the person projecting himself into the scene was himself male, so he couldn't self insert if a female was doing the liberating. To sum up, he saw the earthbenders as unable to free themselves, not for lack of earth, but for lack of the privilege of agency that only white people possess. And he had to gender swap Katara's scene so he could insert himself as a man better. In this way he showed himself to be both racist and sexist and a narcissist, or in simpler terms, utterly woke. Well done!

    Fun fact: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was supposed to be a lot longer. There was supposed to be: An explanation for how the Chancellor was kidnapped and why Grievous had a cough. Many moments were Padme ruined Sideous' efforts and was attempting to instill distrust towards Padme into Anakin with little to no success. The political corruption and downfall of the Republic into the Empire was more gradual and not as sudden as in the actual movie. There were a lot of other things but those two were always the most interesting. Supposedly, George after seemingly coming up with an amazing movie script with help this time significantly gutted the movie after being discouraged by reception and fearing the drama would make the movie hated. In ironic retrospective, it is one of the things that Star Wars fans loved about the pre-Galactic Empire period in Star Wars. Also, Hayden as an actor, as well as Anakin the character indirectly, has kinda received a lot of love and appreciation that Keanu Reeves has had over the years. At least, in a similar manner. In summary, a happy outcome for the Star Wars prequels. This movie? Kinda in a chronostasis in terms of reception. Although, I personally feel indifference towards it now.

More specifically it's well known that George C. Scott didn't quite understand the satirical tone that Kubrick was going for with his film and ended up making a deal that for each of his scenes he will do only one take where he would act as over the top as Kubrick wanted and the rest he would play it straight serious, but then Kubrick used only those former takes.

    At first, I liked the idea of fore benders needing to bring their own fire, but then I thought about the other benders and how they work. Sure, the other benders can't make their own element out of nothing, but that doesn't really matter, because those elements are everywhere. Air? If you don't have air, you're suffocating to death anyway. Water? It's a limit at first, until you realize water can be drawn from everything from plants to your own sweat. Earth? Look at the lengths they have to go to in the original show to keep earth benders from bending. They put them on a metal ship in the middle of a pool of boiling water. Even when Toph was trapped in a metal cage, she realized metal was made of earth and bent it. By making fire benders have to make and transport their own fire, you make them so much weaker than the others, and they're supposed to be the main threat. Not to mention, water benders were already OP as heck. Not only is water more destructive than people think, but they can freeze it to trap people, they can turn it into steam and blind their enemies. They can heal wounds, because why not? And they can even control the water in your blood. Yeah, they need a full moon for that, but that happens way more often than a pass from Sozin's Comet.

    I don't even understand how M Night could confuse the Air Nomads valuing life above all to saying the Avatar should never hurt anybody. So what is he going to do in this martial arts trilogy of yours? Neither Aang nor the nomads were pacifists per se, they stayed out of conflict and detached themselves from worldy possessions so they didn't feel the need to have a formal military. But when it was time to get down, they got down, I don't think anyone needs reminding on how many firebenders were found with Gyatso. The whole conflict at the end of the show was whether Aang had to abandon the teachings of the culture that only lived through him in order to have the power to win. In the end he had to fight as the last airbender and not the Avatar, as there would be no balance without drawing wisdom from the four cultures, if he killed he would be destroying it, and it was only poetic for the first culture to be eradicated being the one with the ability to bring peace. He's not just a being of ppwer, he's not just the Avatar of the spirits and the elements, but also the world's cultures, their philosophies give him strength. The belief every life had value wouldn't be a conviction if he could abandon it whenever it was convenient. Now how would M Night possibly show this conflict if he changed it to the Avatar never hurting people by default? What would be the moral dilemma if no other Avatar was subtley dropping hints he should kill Ozai? Would he just be "yeah but I want to kill him" while all his past lives are like "no you don't kill people" and then he doesn't kill Ozai after 3 movies of not even hurting people? What a shock, the Ong who doesn't even fight people anymore didn't murder someone.

    I will do the one thing no one has ever done and give this movie *one* credit. There’s a line early on in the movie where Sokka and Katara’s grandmother is speaking about the Avatar and makes the comment that the Fire Nation hates him so much because they want to sever the connection to the spirit world that he represents. Now, like everything in the movie, it’s given no depth or substance whatsoever… but there is actually an interesting idea there. I could see the original series delving more into the idea that the Industrial Revolution in the Fire Nation made them feel more disconnected from the spirits than ever before and they don’t just hate the Avatar because he’s powerful enough to stop them but because as the link between the two worlds, they hate what he represents and wish to create a purely physical world in which steel and fires of industry rule. This would also tie into the larger messages and themes of the story about balance and not allowing technology to overshadow everything else. It would have actually fit so well into the original series that I’m surprised it’s an angle they didn’t come up with on their own. So despite doing everything else wrong movie, I’ll give you that one thing you did that made me think, good on you. (Also Iroh’s actor, he was the only one actually trying to emote lol.)

    The reason the Earth Kingdom held out so long against the Fire Nation was because of their tenacity. Arguably, they and fire were the strongest of the two elements in terms of sheer power. Even the Water Tribes, who theoretically should be the best equipped to keep the Fire Nation at bay, still was unable to stand against them. The southern tribe lost all their benders in raids, and the north only held out because of the moon and Aang. Without either, they were on the verge of losing the battle. Also, take into account that ultimate leaders of the Earth Kingdom were completely unaware of the war going on. And they were still able to hold out. Smaller settlements fell, yes, but it took Bumi doing nothing for Omashu to be seiged, and the Kyoshi warriors held their own as well. It took Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee, three VERY competent, highly trained, and highly talented people, to take out both the Kyoshi Warriors AND the city of Ba Sing Se. Meanwhile, in the movie, it takes 5 men to make a rock the size of a soccer ball hover, and it takes another to make it hit someone. What an absolute insult to the Earth Kingdom and its people.

    The writers were willing and able to work around his limitations as an actor, especially early on. His role for the first few movies was to stand there and look awed at things

    @@ninjalectualx you're right and therefore shout out to cinematography as well, knowing their child lead is new so keeping THE WORLD as the real main character.

    Wouldn't say nailed it because Rupert Grint was clearly the better actor in the first few films. But he did solid and aged well

    The funny thing about the movie is that it makes the Netflix live-action series look like a masterpiece in comparison. Mostly just because the character's ethnicities are correct and the script sounds like real dialogue between two humans. Mostly.

    I'll admit I enjoyed the Netflix adaptation. Is it perfect? No but nothing is and that's okay. Is it as good as the cartoon? No and I went in expecting that. For what the Netflix adaptation does it does significantly better than this terrible piece of poop movie.

    34:43 Speaking of adapting Avatar universe and making it into a darker story. Honestly I think a series that takes place in the 100 years between Aang's abrupt disappearance and his reemergence would be cool. Show the state of the world and the war at its height, the genocide of the air nomads (do it tastefully ofc) hell maybe have a young Iroh. I'd never trust current/today's production studios to take up the task and do it properly, but it's a neat concept to think about nonetheless.
