    Christian monks (Catholic and Orthodox) work most of their life to sustain their monastery. Farming, cooking, distilling, handiwork and the like. The rest of the time is usually spent in mass and prayer. They even spend the time eating listening to theology. It's kinda amazing that in history no monk order wanted to defend themselves. Completely different to buddhist monks. So western monks have spiritual/physical balance too, but it's completely developed out of necessity (although they are taught to love their work). I don't think there's many people that are made for these kind of lifestyles - western or eastern. Be careful what you wish for

    @@ddmound In Mandarin, Kung Fu or Gong fu literally means any skill acquired from hard and long effort. If you specifically mean "Martial Arts" every Chinese person will refer to "Wushu" or "Wugong" . The Shaolin monks would refer to Shaolin Wugong. Kung Fu is the term popularized by movies and bruce lee. The ancient book of Martial Arts in China still written as "Wushu".

    If you think living like a poor farmer who occasionally works out and prays is a better life then what you currently lead, well, then just LEAVE your current life behind. Go on, do it. Become that farmer working out in the middle of no-where-important. Chances are, your life just sucks, you're bitter about it, and seeing this romanticised, mystical kung fu marketing sets off your tendency towards escapist fantasy.

The movies have done a disservice to this exemplary way of life, engaging the mind, body and spirit and over a long period of time, embodying perseverance, practice and humility. @@bt70a9 to be good at sport fighting you need to practice sport fighting. There are plenty of Shaolin students who specialize in Sanda. If they cross train in ground fighting they would hold their own in mma. It's that simple. The Shaolin students aren't for the most part training to compete. They all hit pads and spar regularly with hard contact. If their goal is not to compete they aren't going to train for it. There is more to life than prize fighting. In fact the martial arts weren't developed for prize fighting.

    I like the focus on both body and mind as well as spirit. Too often we get distracted and lose sight of what makes life worth living. Our health. Instead people compensate for the lack of balance by taking drugs or abusing alcohol as well as drinking coffee just to stay awake. Chronic sleep deprivation is a real issue. Sadly, that lifestyle has become the norm in many places with people who question that destructive lifestyle being considered weird. I personally have decided to aim for balance and health.

  • @danielt.4330

    @danielt.4330

    Consciousness is indeed being raised. More people are realizing that, if you have your health, you have everything, but if you don't have it, you have nothing. This is because you literally need your health in order to enjoy anything, from working to watching a movie. Also, sleep deprivation is indeed overlooked by many people who are not aware that you need sleep just as much, if not more, than you need food. You literally need 8-10 hours every night, and some people think that 4-6 is okay. They are very ignorant. As science gets better, and more research is done, more people will slowly realize how important taking care of our bodies is. Keep being positive! Thanks for spreading a good message, bro.

    People who doubt shaolin gongfu in a real fight, watch here 41:53, then 41:59, then 42:03 That is Xiao Hong Quan application right here :) This fight was won because Shi Fu Yan Zi used traditional Xiao Hong to prove the point & I'm glad he did that - opened my eyes about traditional forms. I know Xiao Hong but I'd never imagined it in a real fight like this. Respect Shaolin Gong Fu!

    There is a legendary video.. I can't find it any more. Of a man that would attack just ONCE.. with such force that dust and dirt would fly off his clothing and kick up from the ground. I think what is being portrayed here in this video is linked to that. Creating inner strength to increase your power. It's a kung fu style that has VERY few strikes but require a lot of power. I respect how they train the children.. the tenacity in the eyes of his mentor.. That child will grow to be stronger than him.

    That's a stunt. Some martial artists will treat their clothes with starch, or apply dust or chalk to them before a performance, in order to create the impression of extra "power". If you want to measure someone's power, have them hit something, like a heavy bag, or someone competent fighting back. Everything else is just gimmicks and stagecraft.
