  • @randomness3876
    @randomness38769 жыл бұрын

    I disagree that Rupert Pupkin is a variation of Travis Bickle- tha detracts from the spectacular performance De Niro pulls off. To lessen his performance by comparing it to Taxi Driver simply because the characters share strange and sociopathic traits is wrong- by that logic any sociopath in film is a variation on Bickle. Travis speaks in a monotone voice and has a very dark mental state, whilst Rupert is similar, he attempts to hide this and is more concerned with seeking someone who appreciates him, through flamboyant actions.

  • @Jamthecoolerator

    This is one of the oddest statements I've ever had the misfortune to read. How does the comparison to Taxi Driver negatively impact De Niro's performance as Rupert Pupkin? Wouldn't it embolden it? And your description of Pupkin doesn't appear to help your cause as it only serves to underline Scott's point even more clearly. In fact, you seem to be arguing just for the sake of arguing.

    I first saw this movie in 1984 and consider it Scorsese’s best and most underrated movie, outstanding performances all around. Johnny Carson was offered the role of the talk show host but turned it down as he didn’t want to give crazy fans any idea, so Jerry Lewis for the part and he was great. Fred de Cordova, Carson’s producer on the Tonight Show, played Burt Thomas, producer of Langford’s show in the movie.

    Sean Maher the loneliness of fame: you never see Jerry with anyone else in this film. He's always alone. At his apartment, he eats dinner alone. At his house, when Rupert shows up uninvited with his date, Jerry is playing golf alone. It seems like he has no family or close friends. When he's kidnapped, the only people who are worried about him are the producers of the show.

    This movie flopped at the box office in 1983. Movies had just moved into blockbuster era with Star Wars and Jaws paving the way. Studios were done spending money to produce and market movies like this one and so support and desire to see it died right away. Today with fresh eyes this is a true gem and possibly the best of its kind. The commercialism of the movie business continues to grow worse every year. At the very least we can discover great films like this when we have enough of Hollywood spoon feeding us countless superhero or franchise films.

    It's a film you'll admire, but never love because none of the main characters are likeable. Even in Taxi Driver, Travis had the remnants of a moral compass and we felt like rooting for him in a perverse way, because he wanted a 'better' world. Pupkin and the Bernard characters are just annoying, and their goal is narcissistic and not one we get onboard with, and we have no sympathy for Jerry Lewis, because his character is horrible too. Plus the film is shot, probably deliberately, in almost a cinema verite style, without the usual Scorcese flourishes. It's a great film, but not one you'll cherish and love.
