This happened the day after my 8th birthday. It’s the first news story that I remember clearly. I remember staring at the television with the footage of all those dead bodies. It was a lot to process as a child. Looking back as an adult, it’s still a lot to process.

Yep, that detail gets misreported a lot but the people who inspected the compound also were attacked with machetes by the leaders goons if I recall. Some expired from their wounds and if that is the case I hope they are recognized as the heroes they were. Doubtlessly Iam sure there were attempts to bribe these people at first but I would love to read up on them and their accounts first before I speak on the matte.

There is a miniseries made in the 80s about this massacre called "The Guyana Tragedy: The Jim Jones Story", which is really good and I highly recommend it. What's more, the mere fact that the great James Earl Jones appears in it is reason enough to see it. There is also a film made at the end of the seventies called "Guyana: Crime of the Century" (belonging to the exploitation genre), which is more commercial than artistic, but it is worth giving it a try, since it has great icons of classic cinema in it, such as Joseph Cotten, John Ireland and Gene Barry

Through and through he was a man of God and got started as a pastor and kept the religious godly angle all the way through his death. Live for God, die for God. Also worth pointing out that the Democratic party of the time was deeply religious and conservative - much closer to the current Republican Party in terms of politics. The Democrats wouldn’t become liberal until the Civil Rights era when the conservatives left over support of desegregation and founded the Dixiecrats and then joined the Republican party after a Democrat signed the Civil Rights Act.

The story about the investigation team is also really sad. It was led by Leo Ryan, a politician who was really in to getting to know the peoples experience. He would regularly lead investigatory teams and even go undercover to see how the common people were being treated. He likely didn’t even need to go hands on with the investigation.

There are many people who are struggling themselves and are very aware of the homeless situation. There are also people who are homeless, based on very poor decisions (including addiction). Imo, donating to charities isn't helping the situation, especially when some charities have misappropriated funds. People lose faith in charities because of this. Sure, there are some people who flat out don't care, and that's with any country.

@@janedoe-hq9vn and yet the vast majority of charities and and churches provide better dollar for dollar results than the government leeches do, funny how that is eh? Really does show how incompetent the feds are if that’s their completions and they are taking a L. I was mostly referring to the fact Karen will ban guns rather than ban the building of slums so she can feel good about her self and feel safe while being neither in reality. If you wish to clown on drug addicts then look no farther than old people, they get a free pass, they suck up funds needlessly while ruining every market in America and act like it’s ok that they get pain pills for a paper cut while young folk get told to suck it up and be a man when injured in a coal mine or at war. forcing them to self medicate thanks to a out break in addicts caused by companies and proliferated by people in your ages demographic if I had to guess. Want to blame someone for drug addicts? Blame the country that made those substances so tightly controlled birthing a black market and a society forcing people to self medicate to cope with how fubar their lives and reality are. It’s easy to blame the individuals but when millions are like that it might be a bigger issue than moral failing. That lie failed in the Industrial Revolution. America needs asylums and it needs jobs made by and for Americans that pay enough and help people move up rather than down in society. The USA had it in the 50s but that generation sold that away because they at their hearts were not good people or suckers.

I remember a documentary(?) I was shown during school about this. It was pieced together from home movies taken by residents. A "test" of loyalty, it was announced over the pa system that he was dead. Then filmed the mayhem that followed. In the center of the screen was a little girl, maybe 2 years old, crying. She was nearly trampled in the chaos. No one picked her up. Then, it was announced that it was only a test. And he was pleased by the show of emotion. Every time a movie shows a child crying during a disaster scene, I'm reminded of the girl. At least in these movies, the child is picked up and rescued. I wonder if the writers know the source of the trope.

I'm 43; when I first became aware I was probably around my atheist years but since I started taking my Christian Faith seriously I stopped allowing such imagery into my eye-sockets. I'm also an academic, so I'd be remiss if I didn't encourage people to understand how these things work (if you are atheist and ready to call Christianity a cult don't worry about it, I'm not here for that so I won't respond). For example, one of the biggest things you'll hear is the racial harmony. So what does that tell us? That the U.S. had such a race/poverty problem while calling itself the greatest (thereby making these people feel invisible) that they literally chose death over these United States. Jim Jones was gifted but anyone with a silver tongue and a will to steal of life itself could have filled that role.

Re: parents signing over their children to him; I wonder if he used the kids as tax deductions while in America, before leaving and creating JonesTown... Second, I have watched a documentary on this situation and it had audio recordings of when the people were being poisoned, many against their will. You can hear screams and crying in the background, as Jim is ranting on...plus, I believe he didn't actually off himself but had someone do it for him.. Horrible.. I find it weird in the photos that were taken after the mass suicide/homicide, that the majority of the people who are dead outside, are laying in the same position (many of them), on their side or stomachs... Also, when Jim was in the states, he would have people in his cult, give him their welfare money and food stamps (for the ones who were on assistance)...he was nothing more than a conman...and a good one at that..

they didn’t sign them over to him but the church. Jim Jones was a huge proponent of communal raising vs parental raising of kids but in reality it was just a subtext to give religious teachings about how faith and the church were more important than life and family.

Jones was raised Pentecostal but became interested in Marxism. He combined the two, and with his narcissism and psychopathy formed a unique cult. It was only when certain members went to the media and his actions started to make the news that he moved his operations to South America. Before this Jones was even on the San Francisco council!
