The Jimquisition Game Of The Year Awards 2022

It's that time again! Time for The Jimquisition Awards, where we pick five games that exemplify something good about an industry we spent most of the year dumping all over. We're doing proper ones this year, too.
The main question is this... will I dare to put Vampire Survivors on the list?

3:23 For those wondering, Jim is probably referring to the Hidden Path to the Haligtree, which then leads into the Consecrated Snowfields, which then leads into Miquella’s Haligtree, which then leads into the Ocean-side city of Elphael… Also the Consecrated Snowfields has a teleporter which leads to a secret underground area and an endgame boss who answers some of the game’s biggest mysteries. Edit: I do genuinely love how Elden Ring has so many examples of this that people are actually arguing which instance of this event Jim is talking about.

If only large publishers diversified at least few dozen devs for smaller projects like that. But I guess that proof is exactly what they don't want to see. They must do their best to keep up the illusion that battle passes, lootboxes, empty open worlds and live services are the only functional way in AAA space. If they had raised expectations by producing something like Vampire Survivors, simple fun with simple price tag, it would be increasingly difficult to justify all the aforementioned bullcrap.

It is very often overlooked how hard and time consuming simple things can be. And sometimes very easy and simple to do stuff is left out for no good reason. Very very small edits or effects can go a long way. Or just transitions in general done well.

Okay, since the Top 10 Sh*tiest Games of 2022 is almost definitely going to be the next video, I thought I would drop my predictions here. On a side note, none of the games listed here are listed in any particular order: Shoe-ins (The games I strongly believe will make the list in some form. There are more than 10, but I’m certain that the list will be at the very least mostly composed of the games here): - Ashigaru: The Last Shogun (It’s a Gilson B. Pontes game. Of course it’s making the list). - Babylon’s Fall (It got a whole Jimpressions slagging it off, as well as a Jimquisition that devoted a ton of time to doing the same). - Chocobo Racing GP (It has a cutesy, kid-friendly aesthetic. It has lots of the worst fee-to-pay elements. Of course it’s getting on the list). - Overwatch 2 (A whole Jimquisition was devoted to trashing on this game). - Diablo Immortal (This game got two Jimquisitions devoted to talking about how bad it is). - Gran Turismo 7 (A whole Jimquisition was devoted to trashing on this game). - The Callisto Protocol (While, at the time I wrote this sentence, it did not get any coverage on the Jimquisition, save for Jim calling it “genuinely, offensively, f*cking sh*t” in Pokémon 2077. Therefore, it seems like this game is already on the list). - Saint’s Row (Jim really didn’t have much good to say when they covered it in Jimpressions). - The Edge of the World Z (Will Shock You) (It’s a Steam game. It appeared in Squirty Plays. Every one of these lists has to have the obligatory Steam game nobody’s heard of or cares about, and this game seems to be what Jim is using to meet this year’s quota). - Some other Steam game nobody knows about nor cares about (If it isn’t the above “The Edge of the World Z (Will Shock You),” it’s going to be something else). Unknowns (Think of these like the dishonorable mentions; these are the games that could make the list, but I don’t know if they will for whatever reason): - Square Enix (As in, the whole company) (This may seem odd, but given how much time Jim has spent tearing into Square Enix this year, in lieu of just putting Babylon’s Fall and/or Chocobo Racing GP (I think it’s most likely both will make the list) on the list, they might instead pull a ProJared and just put the entire company on the list (If you’re unfamiliar, basically, ProJared does a ranking the top 10 worst games of the year each year. Sometimes, he will place an entire company on the list, should that company have screwed up basically everything it did that year. He gave Activision Blizzard this treatment last year, and he’s also done it to Konami twice in the past). - Pokémon Scarlet & Violet (Jim only called this game “bad,” and then in the same video, said that The Callisto Protocol went beyond just “bad” and was “genuinely, offensively, f*cking sh*t.” Therefore, it seems very much like Jim did not consider this game bad enough to make the list, so I don’t think it will show up there). - Galaga Wars+ (I don’t know if this game is relevant enough that Jim will put it on the list, but the fact that it got a whole Jimquisition devoted to it says something, so it might make the list). - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (Jim explicitly refused to cover this game because of Activision-Blizzard’s handling of its work culture. However, they might still put it on the list because of that situation, if nothing else. After all, Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad made the top of 2020’s list, largely because of what came out from Ubisoft, though also because of the game’s low quality itself. I haven’t heard much of the discourse, since I’m not a Call of Duty player; I’ve never really been an FPS fan, so I don’t care about the game. But what little I have heard in passing hasn’t been good). - Sonic Frontiers (I don’t know exactly what Jim’s opinions on this game are. Jim kept trashing this game on the side in the opening of the video on Yuji Naka’s arrest for insider trading, but it didn’t seem like much of what they were saying was serious). - Sonic Origins (I almost wonder if the absolute tornado of confusion that is it’s pre-order chart is enough to get it on the list. But at the same time, I’m really not sure).

Sterling did put out a review for Sonic Frontiers that wasn't as positive as most others who provided reviews, and Sonic fans allegedly got up in arms about their review. This was around the time it released and was around the time VideoGameDunkey made his video on Frontiers. There's been a mess of Sonic fans being very defensive and passionate about Frontiers since it's technically better than many of the latest entries that involve 3D gameplay. I do recall Sterling actually enjoying Sonic Forces, which ironically means they were on opposite ends of opinions for both games. It is also worth noting that the review bombs on Metacritic for Sonic Frontiers were actually started by a 4chan troll that wanted to get Dunkey's attention and cause chaos between his community and the Sonic fanbase. Personally, I thought it was okay as a proof of concept, but there's plenty of content to expand upon and flaws to iron out. It's not really GotY-worthy or even a mind-blowingly great game, but I wouldn't mind seeing a more fleshed out sequel that uses a similar formula.

It's usually taken as a sign of negativity that the "Worst Games" list is more popular, but I want to look at it a bit differently. My taste and Sterling's (in terms of games we like) is very different. This isn't a bad thing, but it does mean that JSS's game of the year might not be something I would enjoy. So I'm mainly watching both videos (of course I watch both) for pure entertainment. And with that as the metric... worst games is WAY funnier. It's the more entertaining video, by far. I have to imagine other people feel the same way, so if they pick only one video, they pick the funnier one.

It's weird to see accessibility mentioned as a positive for Legends Arceus because it's way less accessible than the regular Pokemon game IMO. Take the huge Pokemon boss Battles that close every zone. Thankfully you can do it by segments (and Gamers TM complained because they're a bunch of whiny babies), but it's still fucking tedious and hard. If you lack coordination, screw you. SV for all of their issues is more accessible in this case (even if you will miss tons of shinies unless you abuse the Let's Go feature). I really would like to see this developed because I don't see it.

Dwarf Fortress deserves a spot on this list, because it shows us how video games are supposed to work: First you create something good, make it available for cheap (or in this case free) and then you essentially ask the audience whether they would like to pay for the game. You do that and the audience gladly pays hand over fist.
