    We are talking about Dev’s here, not employees. He is specifically asking dev’s to pay him (via revenue share) for a service, that if mismanaged, can lead to that dev’s company closing and people getting made redundant.

    Jason Schreier had a good point about how most CEOs of game publishing companies know nothing about games. So Dunkey is already ahead in that regard.

    He isn't going to be making them, just judging them and making sure those that he likes get published. As far as I know he's not involved in the actual making of games. And if he is, he'll probably be there on a pretty hands off position.

    Literally one of the biggest indie publishers is a film studio that had never been even remotely involved in games before opening their games division. It’s wild that people just don’t know how publishing works.

    @@harrylane4 I assume you mean Annapurna? If so, I would probably trust a company that has a history of publishing over one without, even if it's not directly in gaming. I'd also point out that Annapurna is backed by the founder's billionaire father, so its success isn't exactly typical.

    @@NoMoreSuperHero uh, the AAA industry is the thing that needs to bleed itself out. indie games are a whole other breed. thats not an industry. indie games are called 'indie' because theyre made by small independant teams of developers, not overseen by any big names telling them to add micro transactions or other bullshit. indie developers often have a vision for a game and wish to carry it out. stardew valley, slime rancher, wobbledogs, night in the woods, are all independantly developed games that have achieved incredible success. i'd argue that the indie scene needs to be supported even further to propagate more projects of passion and art. to say that an indie developer needs to be starved out because no new blood should emerge is a bizarre take. thats similar to saying that artists shouldnt draw or paint anymore, or musicians shouldnt sing.

    "They must be having a mental breakdown" was the go-to explanation my abusive family gave when I finally cut them off, spoke out about what they'd done to me, and started a new and happier life for myself. It's also speculation I saw a lot of people making when Demi Lovato proudly came out as nonbinary, and it bounces around on social media basically any time trans people are in the news. Alleged mental breaks are one of the only ways creeps and status quo warriors can explain people choosing to rebel against them and their precious systems of conformity.

    This isn't even the first time that a KZread gaming critic has transitioned into publishing games themselves; it's just that Dunkey has a larger "fanbase" than any of the other examples I can think of.     @@frogglen6350 Then someone should make a competitor/cooperative(?) game publishing studio that highlights anime turn-based RPG games specifically to fill that gap. That way doomer numpties have a site to rally around and circlejerk about hating Dunkey. Everyone wins, except AAA publishing companies. I love RPGs, I love strategic, turn-based combat, and I *tolerate* anime. I love Octopath, I very much enjoy Xenoblade, I like the Kingdom Hearts series. I didn't like Dunkeys reviews of those games. I still hope he knocks it out of the park because I'm not a fool who wants people to fail because "he likes games I don't liiiiiiiiike and he doesn't like games I liiiiiiiike WAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

    From one They/Them Femme to another, thank you so much for "going crazy" and having a public coming out, even with knowing what kind of minefield you were walking into. I don't think I could have ignored my own gender biz much longer anyway but watching someone that I've been following as long as you address your own definitely put one of the final cracks in my egg. My self image and internal quality of life over the last year and change has improved so much. Also, holy crap, its been like 10 years. Pretty sure I started reading your articles on The Escapist when I was getting into Unforgotten Realms in 2010/2011. Don't know much about Dunkey, beyond the fact that the channel was a thing, but if it means more cool indy titles available to me, I'm all for it.

    I too am a nonbinary trans-femme (also genderfluid)! Stephanie's journey has been nothing short of inspiring. They are one of the most beautiful (inside and out) and incredible people I've ever known. And to hell with Christianity and their bullshit bigotry, the source of all the world's problems.     Well tbf, just cuz you're good at one thing, that doesn't mean you're going to be good at another thing. Jordan was an amazing basketball player, but he was a fairly average baseball player. But he was doing what he loved and frankly that's all that mattered. And considering what most publishers do is provide capital to devs and publicize the games, I'd say that Dunkey's got the latter down pretty well. It's just whether he'll be able to do the former that will really define the success of the company. So, we'll see. I wish them all the best and I hope they succeed. They certainly can't be any worse than the AAA game publishers.

    This reminds me of when streamers, that are know for one game, try to venture out into other games. I almost always feel bad for them. They want to try something new but are afraid the "fans" will leave or worse, turn on them. It also reminds me of musicians. They may get know for an album or possibly worse, one song. Either is only what the crowds want from then on. The musicians are stuck in a similar situation as the streamer.

    That first sentence reminds me alot of SML He used to have characters like Woody,Tony,Mr Pig, etc and a bunch of series however after introducing Jeffy he doesn’t want to bring back the old characters and series more prominently because he was unsure about how the fans would feel he’s not sure if there’s enough demand This was back in the late 2010’s, and he might change his mind since he brought back black yoshi

    The key qualification of being a publisher is having the money to put up front. Good on Dunkey for not only being successful enough to afford to attempt this endeavor, but also for taking the financial risk to actually move the industry in a positive direction.

    You didn't mention how Dunkey's mission statement also lets would-be creators send their stuff in to start networking. Sending resumes or portfolios with stuff done. I really want to make games and have a bunch of ideas for them, so sent mine in yesterday. Made me realize just how much I've actually done.

    I honestly think that this is just an example of "Misery loves company" with Dunkey, where people who have never achieved anything become frustrated at not only seeing people succeed but succeed in multiple areas. For people who'd rather make excuses than try, seeing others do that must be an extra kick in the teeth.

    Videogamedunkey and Leah seem passionate about the venture. As for "Staying in one's Lane" there is no such thing. We as people live varying experiences, love different things to varying degrees. It'd be like telling you to stick to video games instead of not branching out into other interests you have. You've done great with the wrestling promotion, and like what Dunkey seems to want to do, you've given some up and comers a chance to show their talents. When it comes back to games, you had the experience with "We Happy Few", done some work with the Oddworld series, and Jazzpunk. Cum on mate, with the writing on this show, the work with other youtubers (DeathBattle) and the wrestling promotion. You'll knock this writing gig out of the park!

    When I originally heard about it, I just assumed that Big Mode was going to try and do the Devolver Digital thing and help greenlight solid indie projects, and that just sounded like a good project, whether or not it succeeds. But the internet is gonna internet, I guess. Congratulations on the writing gig! I can't wait to see what you make!

    I think way too many people conflate a video game developer with a video game publisher. They are two separate entities that are responsible for 2 separate areas of the game's production. Typically the publisher doesn't do much or any of the actual game development. Their primary purpose is usually to provide marketing, porting, localization, QA, and advertising. Along with some other miscellaneous things. There really there just to bridge financial gaps that the developer wouldn't typically be able to cross themselves. As mentioned in this video, it doesn't really require the publisher to actually know how games are made (of course, that definitely helps). Publishers really just deal with the business aspect of it.

    See I personally would not go with Dunkey’s company as a publisher for my own games as I’ve found my views for what games should be does not fully line up with his. That said, I have called for more passionate people helming the industry for a while now and that’s exactly what Dunkey’s always been, so I wish him the absolute best on this endeavor and hope we get some good things out of it as the buyers (I can’t really say the word consumer properly anymore with how it’s used nowadays lol)

    As little as I care for Dunkey himself, I do actually hope this succeeds. When it comes to JRPGs, there's at least plenty of other publishers out there anyway. I do find it amusing some people are interested in deliberately submitting JRPGs. I wonder how that's going to go, will it actually happen and start a whole new sh*tshow, will it just fizzle out or will he _actually accept_ them? I've never tried publishing myself but I have tried making games and it's entirely outside of my ballpark. Even with recycling assets, which as something of a "remix artist" I excel the most at.

    In addition to your examples, there are other former critics out there who turned into writers. One of RPS's co-founders is a writer for Housemarque and previously worked on Returnal, Total War: Warhammer, and Trek to Yomi. It's more commonplace than everyone thinks it is, and I, for one, am happy they can make a living outside of being a critic. I hope for the best for you as well!

    I’ve got mixed feelings about this cuz I’m just skeptical of all KZreadr centric video game development / publishing ventures. I do hope Bigmode all the best, because their goals are laudable and worth fighting for and if they succeed it will only do good, but I can’t help but worry anyways cuz of what I’ve seen from past KZreadr projects. However, being tentative is very different from being gleeful of the idea that they flop. I don’t understand that angle, it’s bizarre. I don’t even like Dunkeys content but that doesn’t give me an excuse to be cruel.

    Yeah its wild people are so mad. Rolling your eyes at Dunk for saying he helped popularize games like celeste or gungeon is one thing, but thats truly not big a deal, and for some games isnt even a lie, to say nothing of the fact that he definitely HELPED spread those games, even as a supplemental element. But to say he should fail just because he was kind of mean to a game you like is ridiculous, especially when the biggest publishers are EA and Activision. I like JRPGs too but im not grabbing the pitchfork because Dunkey clowned on Xenoblade again.

    I'm the same age as Stephanie here. I've gone from "AAA" games to indie games over the past decade or so. I've been enjoying Dunkey's content and I think he has a great idea of what will not only fill a gap in the market, but also be fun to play. I really hope for the best for Bigmode and Dunkey/Leah. Thank God for James Stephanie Sterling.

    Seems like a lot of people got mad because they don't fully understand what a publishing company is, or how it can help new and unknown developers get more visibility for their product. I base that on a lot of the comments on Dunkey's original video, where people seemed to think that he would be developing games, or aimed to steal money from developers. It's weird to tell people to 'stay in their lane' just because they're known for doing a certain thing - Imagine going back in time and telling a company like Epic Games (who started as a games developer) not to make a distribution platform to compete with Steam? Thanks to them branching out, I've received hundreds of dollars in free software that I would have had to pay for otherwise.

    Seriously can't understand people who want bigmode to fail.. like, what do they have to lose if it does succeed? They get more indie games that might not have gotten published otherwise, and if dunkey's vision succeeds, good indie games even, and if he fails, then the opposite is of course true, they might miss out on those indie games that never get published. I don't think it succeeds, but I still very much hope it does and not just because I am a fan on dunkey, but also because I just like video games

    My worries for dunkeys company are mostly if he knows how to be a good publisher not only for the players, but also for the devs. His announcement was very focused on bragging to the gamers and telling gamers how hes gonna get great stuff out for them - but I was missing some more information what he really brings to the table for the devs. Curious to see how it plays out and what his first indie picks will be!

Esp. if he stays true to his true to his word about not publishing games with crypto or NFTs or any of that shit. Fuck those people who say otherwise.     This weekend might have been exhausting for Steph and Phoenix, but at least it's the satisfying kind of exhausting. As for Dunkey, while I'm not totally on-board *(I'm still kinda on-board, just not 100%),* I will at least hope that Bigmode actually goes well. Because we need more indie publishers like this. With that said, while deranged individuals hope for failure, I personally hope that Bigmode doesn't end up putting too much into a bigger project that ends up backfiring. While Daikatana probably wasn't the only reason why Eidos ended up having problems, it's one of the reasons why Thief 2 had to make a tighter deadline than it should have, and likely contributed to Looking Glass going belly-up shortly after. And as for the pre-emptive criticisms levelled as Steph for their involvement in Vampire Survivors, we can safely ignore the bulk of them, since the bulk of these "critics" aren't actually people anymore. They've rejected their humanity more vigorously than if they willingly donned the Stone Mask, to the extent that even an absolute monster like Dio Brando would be shocked and appalled. Creatures who can be more reprehensible than Dio Brando don't simply need shaming: they need to get pumped full of Hamon. As a matter of fact, if it weren't for the ongoing pandemic of chaos-spawned psychopathy, I'd say it'd be prudent to take these libellous anti-people to court for spewing such defamatory filth. They're marking themselves for purification, and they don't even know it. It'd be hilarious if they weren't so dangerous.

    Dunkey's smarter than he lets on, and his ability to break big concepts down into smaller, workable ideas leads me to think this isn't a spur of the moment thing but something he's been researching for a bit. I think he'll do fine, at least for a bit. My only worry is he won't have a plan to make enough money early on to see him through getting a steady revenue stream.

    Miss/Mrs Sterling, When you first came out a long time ago I first didn't know what to think, I too thought that "Jim has gone crazy" because I didn't have much experience with the trans community at the time, I had some bigotry inside myself as well I'm sure. But I had watched you for a very long time up until that point, since long before you first appeared in the co-optional podcast with the late Totalbiscuit, with that in mind I figured "well let's give it a chance and see where they're going with it". I'm glad I stuck around and got to experience this journey through your KZread channel. I don't really think I'm noticing much difference in your content now compared to before, except your intro in which you now reefer yourself to "James Stephanie Sterling.". I think I'm a much more open and progressive person now today compared to how I was before your coming out, I'd like to think you're partly to thank for me opening my mind and not being afraid of what's different. I will keep watching your videos for as long as I am interested in gaming and the gaming industry (with all its politics and controversies).

    As someone who watched a bunch of this show before the transition, then took a break from game industry news on youtube, and is now back here, there's really been no difference in content or quality aside from a slightly higher number of cutaways. The people complaining are just transphobes and the kind of idiots who say "I like the old you better" to any popular youtuber they watched before they blew up. Props on acknowledging your past mistakes and becoming a better person.

    That comparison of Dunkey's new game publishing company to giving everyone ice-cream is actually a good one. No matter how good is ice cream you give away or variety of types they can choose, there will be people who will send death threads because "Why haven't you thought of lactose intolerant" No matter what you do, you will never be able to appease everyone. There will be those who, no matter how much good you spread, will always find a way to hate you, even for the most pitiful and/or made up reasons. I hope Dunkey will make through in his new publishing role and hope for you Sterling that your part in game writing will do wonders and become a way to rub into those who hate despite having no real reason to hate just for the sake of it.

    I do think that if you give away free shit, you should accommodate the people who are allergic to said shit (assuming there are hypoallergenic alternatives to the thing). Lactose intolerant people should have access to soy or non-lactose products tbh. It gives a tiny bit of ableism to frame us as unimportant? But we ARE unimportant, and many of us still drink milk anyway so I get the point.

Please don't put what you said here into practice.     I hope Bigmode does well. Dunkey isn't the first content creator I have seen dip their toe in game publishing; the Game Grumps as well as Jessy Cox are part of indy game publishing companies! I also can't wait to read about how Milk ghosts are squeezed out of big juicy tities and seek vengeance and anyone with hands.

    I’ll admit, I’m a game dev and I was one of the people in my circles clowning on him a lot- I feel like a lot of us game devs specifically were getting caught up on the kinds of games he showed as examples of his kinds of indie games he wants to make, but honestly, I feel like I lost sight of what even just a couple thousand dollars of funding can mean for a really small project. Hell, I KNOW people who have been working unpaid on personal passion projects that any amount of publisher money would be a huge help for them. I didn’t even realize how cynically I’d been viewing the whole thing, thank you for break me out of that

    I don’t follow the game industry so I had no idea Dunkey is starting a publishing company. That’s awesome news. I hope it’s successful so more people are willing to try. There are a ton of internet personalities with the money to do that.

    Stephanie, congrats on a successful wrestling promotion, and for the new writing gig! And great point about the people being down on you and Dunkey likely having never tried to do anything themselves. Personally, (regrettably) I used to mock my friends’ own artistic endeavors (behind their backs), until I started drawing myself. As soon as I was the one doing the work myself, making the mistakes myself, and learning the lessons myself, I quickly came to see that nearly everyone who creates “art” in some form or context, is incredibly supportive of others doing the same. Cuz putting something out there, opening yourself up to criticism, is incredibly brave.

    I'm sure it's a minority not even worth mentioning. If you make a successful living critiquing games you're inevitably going to ruffle a few feathers, but his community has always seemed overwhelmingly positive towards what he does.

    I don’t have much opinions on the dunkey thing but “we’ll just decide to publish good games!” Is a very silly mission statement, as if that strategy is somehow untried

    I hadn't heard of him before this video, and while I don't think content creators are on the hook for stuff members of their audience does, I gotta say that his most vocal fans on twitter are not making for a great first impression of the guy. A worrying amount of what I was seeing was a lot of really thoughtful threads from indie devs actually taking it seriously and talking about how they wish bigmode success and hope it leads to some good games, but that the announcement video he made didn't really address the kind of things that they as a dev would need to know to think about entering into a business relationship with him, and then members of Dunkey's audience showing up to QRT or reply to them saying 'why is everyone hating on dunkey, why all the negativity, why can't you just celebrate a good thing happening in gaming'. And that's not even factoring in the ones responding by saying things like 'lol imagine taking dunkey seriously', that's just a really bad look for someone inviting people to seek a business relationship with him. A lot of the talk I was seeing about it from Dunkey fans are thinking about it purely in terms of being both end users of games and fans of Dunkey, and just not considering the fact that the people Dunkey was trying to reach with his video are gonna be coming at it from a very different perspective. More publishing options for indie devs will only ever be a good thing and I hope Dunkey and Leah can hire the right people to help them manage the company, and listen to the feedback from devs about exactly what kind of practices a publisher who wants to be properly supportive to indie devs should adopt. But if any indie dev looks at the way a lot of his audience are behaving about this and thinks 'these are the people who'd also be the main audience for my game if I published with bigmode' and decides it's not worth it, I honestly couldn't blame them. tbh I just think his video was a bit too haphazard to be an effective sales pitch, plus his on-camera persona seems to have initially confused even members of his own audience as to whether the announcement was a joke or not. Also it whether it was intentional or not, it seemed like he was calling Frog Detective spam, which is a really strange thing to do in the same video where you're saying you want to appeal to devs passionate about making fun games, because I think those games are great fun and were clearly made with a lot of passion. I'm guessing it wasn't an intentional slight against the game, but it still comes off as one, and it's another example of how confusing the message of the announcement was, so it's likely to just come off as a red flag to devs. ANYWAY never mind all that, congrats on the writing gig JSS! Looking forward to you making them let you put Jonathan Off Road Rules in the game as some kind of cum golem, or whatever you decide to do ♡
