    Also publishers don't know shit about games. Just selling them. If he makes videos with his friends and pay them. He got a ton of people looking at every game he publishes. Making it near impossible for them to fail. All he has to do is not publish bad games. I see him doing well in the first two years then falling off as he greenlights what ever and becomes more worried about money then the games like every publisher.

    10:04 the playtesting still is incredibly important though, since the quality of the games is directly tied to his ability to provide marketing. The only reason he can provide marketing is because his viewers trust his word and he’s created a great reputation over the years. If he publishes games that end up like shit, it’s gonna tank his reputation and is going to directly affect his ability to sell games to his audience.

    As an indie developer, his audience is definitely what Dunkey is bringing to the table. So Dunkey offers ~30m monthly video views, with an average video netting 1-1.5m within the first day. So let's say he puts up a video on launch day for a game he's publishing, and that video gets 1.25m views. If even 0.1% of those views convert to a purchase - and honestly I'd expect this to be higher if he's singing the praises of the game - that'd be 1,125 Day 1 purchases. Instantly pushing the game into the New & Trending category on Steam. Let's not even get into the fact that the game, if good, is likely to make it to the top of the most Wishlisted games on Steam simply from Dunkey making videos about it in the lead-up to the release. Wishlists have a much higher conversion rate than above, so if the game gets 20-30k wishlists, we can realistically expect another 1k-5k sales on Day 1. Developers can also host Steam streams of their game whenever they want. Let's say he's participating in that too for the Day 1 release. Then anyone just browsing Steam is now likely to see the stream due to the game being top of New & Trending (if you view the Steam page when the developer is streaming the game, the stream will instantly play at the top), and he's so well known that it should lead to more conversions. Comparatively not a ton of people follow the accounts of publisher's so they can't do this kind of a push. Devolver, as mentioned, is an exception due to how fantastically they market their games. But most seem like they're just there to provide a little bit of funding and then take large chunks of profit in perpetuity,

    The auidence is the only benefit he brings as a publisher, otherwise there's a heap of risk here for a studio. I question if he'd be capable of getting Porting (what platforms? is he just going to pull an EA and outsource it to a porting house?) and QA support to be on the same level as other publishers. As an Indie developer I wouldn't risk it until his company shows proof that they're not going to screw you around. Plus competing with Devlover is going to be a difficult prospect I think Dunkey has bit off a lot, lets see if he pulls it off.

    But I'd also expect most videos about the new games he's publishing to net much less views, especially after a while of those videos being published. Meaning it probably won't get 1-1.5m views in a day. But also, advertising typically reaches much more people. And that's one of the perks of going with a more traditional publisher like Annapurna or Devolver. Even if his videos could net 1.5m in a day, advertising through more tried and true methods such as video ads, billboards, etc. can also reach as large an audience, if not larger. Then add on how E3, PAX, GDC, etc can attract even more people.

    @bodardr

    @@ATXnomad698 Okay, so first off, I really hope I didn't come across as hating my audience by writing this comment, but honestly I don't think so. With that said, I really don't hate my audience, but I'll try to pitch in on why we _might_ find some gamers annoying or disconnected from the game dev scene. Game Development is a hyper competitive area where there's lots of passion and creativity, which is why I became one in the first place. So there's a lot of work involved figuring out how game engines work, input, graphics, you get the idea... lots of effort lead to some expected payoff in the form of sales or at least a form of positive reinforcement. A "keep it up, proud of you" kind of thing, if you will. During my associate's degree, there was a series of death threats addressed to a game dev because he got an exclusivity deal on the Epic Games Store. To me, he's just trying to survive in this ruthless industry, he's not entitled to release it everywhere for the sake of gamers having their product on their favorite store or library. He wants to put the game out there, and keep making more. So here's the fracture : gamers seem to think we have a duty to give them a game in this pristine, near-utopian condition... But the truth in my opinion is, we're just like you guys. We're gamers that love making great experiences, but we're not perfect. We might miss out on some details, may seem out of touch on some areas, and lack the experience, knowledge, you get the idea. To me, a video game is the most difficult art medium to produce. You got sound, graphics, and interaction to think about - and that's just the human senses at work. But hey, it may be the most satisfying thing to pull off. I'd be glad to give out some other examples, but I'll keep the already huge wall of text as digestible as possible. If you have more questions, feel free to drop them. Cheers

    I'm an game developer of 15+ years, worked in the industry and indie games throughout my career. Game publishing is not as complicated as people think. Dunkey is a hard working man and he knows games, if he has contacts and resources, that's about all he needs. Publishing is not development, it's about choosing projects to fund, connecting people to people and companies to companies, and then marketing. Localization sometimes. I don't think there's anything immediately wrong with the concept of BIGMODE, but I do think dunkey kind of shot himself in the foot with the optics of the announcement video, and the website itself leaves an important question for anyone who wants to do more than steam releases. just my two cents as someone who's worked with publishers before: 2:20 - Yes, most games are bought digitally, and the access that consumers have to your content is no longer really tied behind brick and mortar institutions. However, that doesn't mean getting your game on a console is easy, ESPECIALLY if your aren't backed by a company that has connections to whichever platform your aiming for (Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo). Can't really get into the specifics of it, but there are quite a few requirements that your gold master must meet and hurdles you have to jump through for EVERY platform you plan on releasing to (Nintendo and Sony being the most particular about what you can and cannot do). A lot of the time (and especially for new comers / small developers) you aren't going to know a single one of these, and even getting access to dev portals / files where these requirements are documented without being a fully fledged company with some kind of legitimacy in the eyes of these major companies can be a daunting task in and of itself. Not to mention the SDKs and development kits. So while "the worst days for game development" are gone, that doesn't mean there isn't a good amount of work on the publishers end when it comes to anything outside of a steam release. Credit to Valve, they have made the release process on their platform relatively easy and they are pretty responsive and open with what you need to fix once you try to get your game released. 10:05 - Marketing is the majority of what most game publishers do *publicly* these days. This is the crux of what I think the divide between what you called "old-school" industry types and modern gaming influencers views on this is boils down to. Publicly, a publisher acts as your marketer. Internally, the publisher acts as your advocate, representation, and source of legitimacy when it comes to dealing with large established companies that you might encounter depending on the scope and goals with your game. 5:51 - I agree with this, but it's also a double edged sword, with the way dunkey is presenting this being one of the key things here. He is, whether he intended to or not, tying his personal brand to a publishing company, so much so that if he faces any kind of controversy it could potentially have drastic effects on the success of the games released under it. This isn't necessarily something that other publishers are exempt from, but the potential impact both long term and short term in the event of significant drama will be amplified. I also take issue with the concept of aspects of games that "always work" and "never work". If the indie scene has shown us anything, it's that what does and doesn't work is always relative to the entirety of the product. Also I think this goes without saying but what does and doesn't work is always going to be dependent on your target audience, and "traditional" American gamers are not necessarily always going to be the target audience (see: JRPGs and how much money they print and renown they achieve with their target demo). Maybe he also thinks that, maybe that was a joke that I took to seriously, but it didn't come across in the video IMO. more of a nitpick than anything I think it potentially speaks to how his announcement might come across to developers, especially indie ones which tend to be much more "auteur" then your average game company. This is why I think some of the skepticism is warranted. What I saw from the video is someone with a lot of passion (and judging from his audience and his claims hopefully enough capital) who wants to help indies make great games. That's admirable, but I do hope he has people on his team with insider connections, solid experience developing and iterating upon games, and have overseen enough indie titles to understand the financing behind them. Otherwise, this could blow up in his face. My guess would be that BIGMODE would be best suited for small indie teams (like 1-5 people) making small games with a quick turn around relative to the typical multi-year process that bigger projects entail (at least at first). Ultimately I think he would have been better suited doing a kind of development fund that gives out grants given over the course of multiple milestone that require semi-regular approval/feedback, with the promise of advertising in exchange for royalties. But I'm interested to see what comes of this. sorry for the wall of text lmao.

Potentially he could even hire people like 3D artists or programmers who could provide assistance to multiple smaller development teams that may not otherwise have enough full-time talent to make the game they want in a timely manner. While any publisher could do these things, why developers would choose to work with Bigmode specifically would of course be for access to Dunkey's audience.

    *CORNBREAD RECIPE* *Ingredients* · Flour: This sweet cornbread recipe starts with a cup of all-purpose flour. · Cornmeal: Opt for yellow cornmeal for this recipe, as it's sweeter than its white counterpart. · Sugar: Use ⅔ cup white sugar for the perfect amount of sweetness. · Baking powder: Baking powder acts as a leavener, which means it helps the cornbread rise. · Salt: A teaspoon of salt enhances the flavors of the other ingredients. · Milk: Use whole milk, 2% milk, or your favorite alternative milk to add moisture and help create the perfect batter consistency. · Oil: A neutral oil, such as vegetable oil, keeps the cornbread nice and moist. · Egg: One egg lends moisture and acts as a binding agent. *How To Prepare* Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9-inch round cake pan. Step 2: Whisk flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt together in a large bowl. Add milk, vegetable oil, and egg; whisk until well combined. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Step 3: Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center of the pan comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes. *Nutritional Factoids* 189 calories; protein 3.1g; carbohydrates 28.2g; fat 7.4g; cholesterol 17.1mg; sodium 353.9mg.

    I could see it working, I'm not a Dunkey viewer but the sheer amount of games I've bought over the last like decade because of seeing Northernlion play them absolutely dwarfs any amount of influence any traditional publisher has had on my purchasing decisions. There are several entire games that blew up almost entirely because of NL finding them and playing them on stream. Probably like half of my steam library is either directly or indirectly influenced by NL, and for sure plenty of those games probably got sent to him by traditional publishers, but it just makes sense to cut out the middleman. It might even be better because if he was the publisher he doesn't have to worry as much about the video analytics for certain games which might be really good but not very watchable or more niche since he gets his cut from the game sales instead of ad revenue. Like it works because if you follow him for a while, you probably know his taste in games and share it to some extent, so if he likes a game that's the best endorsement you can get, and if Dunkey's audience is the same way this could definitely have potential.

    Dunkey can act as a snowball effect, being able to bring out generally good games and letting them meet their market while giving them good deals. Eventually as he gains funds he can further increase the size and development time of these games. I don't doubt he could start off well, he just needs to start off with a good game to set his viewer's expectations. Eventually however, I wonder if he can upscale his publishing company in a managable and effective way.

He's also 100% right about navigating the indie space today and almost everyone in the dev community agrees with it, selling video games today has never been harder. By virtue of his name alone, he's already bigger in marketing than most publishers today, and that puts Big Mode in the top tier publishers already, as you stated.

    The joke is, Most publishers don't understand games right now. So saying "He doesn't know how to make games" Means nothing because no one apart of publishing knows anything about making games. Why? They are the marketing for those games, not making. If Dunky can only tie his name with good games then it doesn't matter if he doesn't know how to make games. He would be a great publisher so long he gets the games he is supporting, sales. He also low key has a cult following anyways as well as gaming youtube friends he can make content with. Meaning no matter what, his games will get eyes on them and I'm not talking like few 100. At lest a few 10ks. Which is massively more then most small publishers can offer.

    Also he is an older You Tuber who is still relevant. Which is harder then it sounds. When he is not the largest of all time. He is like Russian Badger where most people know who he is even if he lacks explosive numbers. So by far he would have a much better skill set to market games. Which in all honesty would be him making videos on it and pushing his friends to do the same. Throw in schemes for a few of them. Then all he has to do is to not go back on his word and only back good games. IE he will be turning down a ton of devs.

Also, to the person who wondered in chat if he would review his games honestly. if he only chooses to publish good games, i think he would be reviewing them honestly... because he liked them enough to publish them in the first place. sure there might be *some* bias because it has his stamp of approval, but it was worth it enough for him to *give* a stamp of approval...lol

    I don't know how people make such a big deal out of this, that it is hard to be a publisher. You literally have every half successful music dj with their own record label and no one finds that weird. Basically if you have the money and know how to plug something in a way that reaches the people you know will like the game.. Like dunkey his audience on KZread, you will be successful. I know I've been persuaded by content creators to buy games because they genuinely enjoy playing it. if 0.1% of his viewers buy the games, that's 10000 in copies sold. Which is more than most games that get published ever sell. When he gets half a decent game he will easily get the 10k copies sold. If he gets a good game in the first 2 games he will be trusted for a long while. A lot of developers would be happy with a 1000 copies sold. With an audience and reach and maybe a network it will not be too hard to make a lot of developers really happy.

  • @1august12
    @1august12 Жыл бұрын

    I think his audience is big enough that getting published by his company is going to be a big boost. But the thing I and probably every other game developer reacted to the most, is his statements about only publishing the "good" games. It's just a really naïve thing to say. Most of the polish, the stuff that turns the project from a mess into a gem of a game, comes at the very end. I've worked on games that I thought were going to be absolute dogshit until we finished it. And there are so, so many games which seemed like easy wins, only to end up being trash at launch. He knows what a good finished game looks like. Does he know anything about how those great hits looked before they released? I don't think he does. I'm not saying it's impossible to predict if a game will succeed, but I wouldn't bet on someone with zero experience working in the industry to be able to do it. There's also the "knowing what always works and what never works"-line. It's such a bullshit statement. A game is more than a collection of mechanics. Simple shit like animation timing and sound effects can completely make or break a mechanic; stuff that you wouldn't think is even relevant to the problem your players are experiencing. There's a reason why designers go through a shit ton of prototyping, playtesting and even starting from scratch in order to figure out what works - and it's not because they didn't play enough games. He's oversimplifying game development to an insulting degree and that gets on the nerves of people in the industry. As if he thinks people just wake up one day and decide to make shit games. Maybe they wear the same colored T-shirts so he knows which guys not to publish. Again, I think he will be successful, at least in the beginning. But people are going to go to him for his audience. Absolutely not for his hubris.

Ofcourse they have a lot to learn about development and what kind of assistance would work best but the assumption here is that aside from some small creative input the main relationship will just be bigmode picking a game they like, them providing part of the needed funds for development and then marketing and publishing. I assume they will start with projects that are close to being done and after some experience will take more calculated risks with projects that aren't as far along to test if their influence is a net positive in success and quality.

    guys. i know it's not a development company but Dunkey is claiming to only publish bangers and markets the company on both the quality assurance and involvement of Dunkey. the difference I mentioned would matter. It'd be one thing if Bigmode was just going to market finished games but Dunkey wants to be involved in the dev process. just to be clear, I wish nothing but good things for Bigmode. I'm a fan of Dunkey, a fan of indie games, and generally agree with Dunkey's opinions on games so I see this company as an ez win. I'm just answering the question. edit: it's unclear how finished the games Bigmode are going to pick up are. I'm guessing halfway-3/4 through development where there's still flexibility in changing/adding/removing core systems but that's just a guess. Nobody really knows so the devs hating on twitter are also probably assuming the same thing I am. It's fine if you don't agree but that's not really relevant to the question I was trying to answer.

    THE thing that publishers do, that you didn't seem to touch on at all - is provide up front capital. The number 1 way a publisher wins or fails is risk management of where they throw their funding - everything else is highly secondary. That means you need to be able to look at an early (unseen but the public) alpha build, look at a company, look at a dev team - and assess if they will get to the finish line with a good product. He has 0 experience on that, and that's what the 'you know nothing about development' critique highlights.

    Game devs aren't annoyed or concerned with Dunkey's ability to market a game. Big content creators are oftentimes the best source of marketing for projects these days. They also aren't just throwing out "boomer takes" when they're worried about the announcement. They're concerned because the way Dunkey worded things in the video heavily suggests he wants to be very involved with the process. Saying you don't want creative control and ACTUALLY not wanting creative control are 2 very different things. I can guarantee Dunkey isn't passionate about marketing, so connect the dots. Beyond that, playing lots of video games is good justification for giving input on design, yes. The flip side to this is that any indie game dev is already going to be very passionate, and also play a lot of games, but instead of making KZread videos for a career they actually went through the process of making projects over and over again and learning. I won't lie and say that a lot of the irritation doesn't come from jealousy. Without a doubt it does. Anyone that's passionate about making games wants to have the power to make games how they see fit. That's why so many people spend years in school / the industry in the hopes that one day they'll actually have enough power on a team to make decisions at some level. Skipping all of that is annoying. End of the day, the annoyance from devs comes from yet another person who has no experience making games thinking they're hot shit and can make amazing games. Thinking up cool ideas on a whim is an entirely different beast from working on the same project day-in day-out for a year or more. Rant over.

    I understand what you are saying and you word it a lot better than most people, but at the end of the day we just have to wait and see what he truly does with it. No point speculating what he may or may not do.

    This is still just going in completely bad-faith for someone just trying to help gaming. You don't mock people for that, you remind & educate them on what they're going into. The results will speak for themselves in time after people actually work with him, then a talk can be held. This was basically just...reactionary twitter, so nothing new, I guess.

    Pretty much every claim he made in his video I can get behind. I also agree with a lot being said here, I feel the major sticking point is that his “seal of approval” is being hyped up a lot. He’s forever tied his reputation as a KZreadr and a Publisher together as one thing, if he compromises his standard even a little to help out his company it doesn’t just hurt his project but it hurts his career and rep. I do think he could pull it off, I look forward to seeing what comes of big mode, I’ve been his viewer for a very long time and really do like his takes, I just can’t help but feel nervous for how much *could* go wrong 😑 Best of luck to Dawnkey, if his vision comes to fruition I think it’ll be great for the industry even if it isn’t groundbreaking right out the gate. Loved the video!

    Yeah it would be very easy to mess up his rep but I think he could pull it off
