The iPad Could Take Over The Creative Industry

Ғылым және технология

The iPad Pro: A Viable Option, But Not a Laptop Replacement (Yet)
This analysis explores the iPad Pro's potential as a professional creative tool, focusing on photographers.
Strengths:
User-Friendly Interface: The iPad excels in offering a simple and accessible interface, making creative tasks like sketching and basic photo editing intuitive.
Streamlined Workflow: Simple tasks become effortless on the touchscreen, allowing creators to focus on their artistic vision.
Weaknesses:
Limited Software: The iPad software ecosystem lacks the depth needed for professional use. Popular editing apps like Photoshop are watered-down versions compared to their desktop counterparts.
Hardware and Ecosystem Limitations: The iPad Pro, despite its processing power, lacks the versatility of a traditional computer setup with multiple monitors, external storage, and specific editing peripherals. The closed Apple ecosystem can also restrict workflow integration.
High Cost of Entry: A professional iPad Pro setup requires a significant investment due to the need for additional accessories like a keyboard and Apple Pencil.
The Future:
AI and Software Advancements: Future advancements in AI and software could revolutionize the iPad experience by offering powerful tools that automate manual tasks and bridge the gap between the iPad's streamlined interface and robust desktop functionalities.
The Rise of the Curator Artist: This future artist might leverage AI as a tool, providing creative direction while AI handles technical tasks.
Conclusion:
The iPad Pro shows promise as a creative tool, particularly for casual users and those exploring new creative avenues. However, limitations in software, hardware, and the overall ecosystem prevent it from fully replacing traditional computers for professional creatives. For now, the iPad Pro is a viable option with limitations, but not quite ready to dethrone the laptop.

This is actually a really intelligent, thoughtful and nuanced commentary on the relationship between Watch → iPhone → iPad → Mac. Also, as someone who worked at Apple I can say you also seem to philosophically understand more about how Apple operates than many of the typical pundits we hear from. Nice work, mate!

Interesting take on what people have. I have had an iPad and iPhone for the past 5 years. I use a Mac at work but never bring it home and primarily do my work on iPad. E-mail, web browsing…photos and for travel. I believe enthusiast make up a much smaller percentage than regular folk. My parents work on iPads.

Great video. But until the MacBook has cellular data and a built in and a rear facing camera, it will never replace my iPad. Granted, I’m probably a niche user but the iPad has changed the way I do aid/relief work in the field. I’ve had the iPad cellular still working when wifi was down while reporting live from typhoon hit regions. I can coordinate supply delivers (water/food/medical) live from the field with one device without being tethered to another all with a screen large enough for me to be comfortable working from.

I think migrating a workflow from Laptop/Desktop to iPad is always gonna be a challenge. You have to start on an iPad and build a workflow around its strengths and limitations. I did that for years in high school, where my iPad was my primary computer. The iPad had to be good enough because it was the only device I could take with me. Was it perfect? No, for the same reason that recording a movie using a Laptop webcam is a bad idea. But you can make it work.

Some more points to consider... Apple announced years ago that they would start bringing MacOS and iOS closer - from the apps and features, to the codebase and the processor they run on - and have delivered. But it's massive. They have few reasons to do it in a hurry, and a lot of reasons to pace themselves. "Keep selling stuff" is a big one, but perhaps more important is to see what people do with the products as they evolve.

I use the ipad for illustration and increasingly to originate drawn animation, but have to go mac for post production work etc. It works but is a pain swapping between machines (and I hate dealing with the very limited IOs file system). Lots are talk about mac os on Ipad and I suspect Apple won't do it, but I think it more likely that they would do mac verison of Microsoft Surface. This would (I hope) work for a lot of professionals. It might be a flagship that they charged for... but I dont think it would conflict with the rest of their range. We'll see...

Our grandkids only have tablets. I have watch, phone, iPad, and laptop. I use the iPad for most casual tasks (KZread, email, zoom, ebooks). I hand hold the iPad or on a stand depending on whether I am also doing work on my laptop. I doubt the iPad will replace my laptop unless Apple allows side-loading and supports virtualization. I doubt they will release a 16” iPad with the power of a max chip.

Used to need a MacBook Pro, back in 2010s when I returned to school for Graphic Design. Now I use Mac Mini desktop, with a big screen TV (old eyes, need big screen) and use an iPad Air5 for any mobile computing tasks (Pages, Keynote drafts-with BT keyboard, mouse & Freeform with Logitech Crayon v2 , then to Mac Mini if needed). As an older person on fixed income & longtime Apple/Mac user, I use an iPhone SE 128 GB, so NOT a lot of work happening on that size screen. Thoughtful commentary, on what might be.

Its close and I think I could do it if Apple would just make the files App better and finally come out with better multi tasking and finally launch FCP for iPad 2, which they said was coming in spring…yet here we are now in summer

Software deficiencies has been the problem with the iPad since its creation. This is part Apple’s fault in not allowing side loading and part developers fault in not compiling such good programs for iPad. I do believe the iPad is sufficient for most people, but there are definitely specialised applications where laptops are still necessary. The iPad has long been my favourite computer, but I still use a Mac as well for certain tasks and when in my office. I love using the iPad, while the Mac is just a necessary tool. Kids are growing up with touch screen devices and I believe the iPad is the future. The Mac seems limiting. I am forever reaching for the screen with nothing happening. Also being tied to a keyboard limits use situations. With software improvements the iPad is a far better device.

The iPad can't even format an USB, something that is always useful for a professional to have, by that point you will be better with a windows tablet or a android/Chromebook tablets that lately they got compatibility with lumafusion Having said that if someone knows how limited is the iPad OS and still wants to have fun with it, i will say is not a bad choice but pls at least have a Android phone or windows laptop for any extra thing that the ipad pro can't handle 😎👍
