The iPad Pro isn’t a laptop replacement if your only computer is a laptop. It was for me because my main computer is a Mac Studio. And I’m not gonna do the same things I do on my Mac Studio on a MacBook Air which is the iPad Pro specs. I need a digital drawing device, and I don’t do enough heavy work to need a MacBook Pro. It’s an amazing drawing device, and I like the focused nature of the OS. I rarely use my keyboard with the iPad. One of the reasons the tablet form factor hasn’t switched as the dominant one in the windows world in the over 10 years Microsoft has been pushing it, it’s because windows sucks as a touch only interface. The iPad and Android devices work because even with no accessories it works fine. I don’t see anyone having a good time just using the surface without a keyboard.

Mapping right-click contextual menus to a long press would go a long way to bridging the gap between point/click and touch. Only issue I could foresee is the limitation of screen size and not all options fitting onto the screen. iPadOS already has a scalable UI, and obviously the OS recognises when the Magic Keyboard is attached. So, while I am undecided how I personally feel about it, a solution could be to lock certain functionality to certain accessories, such as the UI scales down to be more point/click friendly depending on whether the Magic Keyboard is attached or not. Sure, it’s somewhat similar to how Windows interfaces with the keyboard folio attaching to the Surface Pro. Realistically, users who want that functionality are typically going to purchase a Magic Keyboard anyway for that purpose, so the act of “splitting” the user base through the purchase of an accessory could work and makes business sense to implement

I have got a M4 13 iPad Pro, been loving it, as a touch first tablet it’s pretty much perfect. When I plug in a keyboard and external screen the option to them run and use a virtual pc with Mac osx on it would be perfect. 99.9% of the time I just need the touch interface but every done and them the full power of a traditional keyboard and mouse os would be highly helpful. I have a Mac book pro but in 8 years I only used it a few times and now it’s out of date and I don’t see the point of replacing it. I have used Samsung dex, they have a done a way better implementation of allowing mobile apps to be used when docked. Apple could learn a lot from them. At the end of the day touchscreen and external keyboard and mouse have completely different needs for user interaction.

The VP of iPad and Mac marketing publicly stated in the Wall Street Journal that the two devices are not competing with one another, and that they instead compliment each other. I would never replace my Mac for the iPad. It simply too hard to adapt the workflows. It's total bs by Apple that they're "incompatible species!" I love Lightroom on iPad and I love how fast the device is but there are a few reasons I couldn’t use ONLY an iPad as my full time work device. One is just not being able to drag and drop files is truly infuriating sometimes. With stage manager and an external monitor it feels a bit cumbersome to move between apps IMO. Zoom acts more like a phone app than the desktop app which doesn’t allow you to see the chat and view the speaker/people at the same time (something I use often in both work and for an online class I take after work hours a few times a week). It really is a great device and something I love traveling with (also use it as my primary personal device) but I can’t see using one for work unless they make stage manager much more robust and turn it into much more of a full desktop experience.

That's extremely inelegant though. Me personally, I prefer function over form - that's why I use Windows and Android. But I used to use Apple everything, and credit where due, while Apple's operating systems are not my favorite they WERE elegant always. Having a toggle between touch-optimized and mouse-optimized interfaces would go against Apple's design philosophy. Also we don't see ANYONE using this, despite laptop-tablet hybrids not just being an Apple thing (Samsung and Microsoft come to mind). In fact I think a feature like that used to exist for Windows 10 tablets that got removed in Windows 11 because it was in many ways less functional than just keeping it consistent.

Lack of calculator on iPadOS i’d the easiest one. Having to download a third party calculator is definitely not elegant. You can’t photos by size on iOS which means you can only check manually or use a third party which is extremely inelegant. You also can’t keep the naturally scrolling on for using the trackpad while off for the mouse meaning you have to resort to third party software again which is not elegant.

@@chhoyla Agree many users can point out a ton of inelegant, buggy and poor implementations in MacOS and iPadOS. It all boils down to Apple ripping people off by using 2 devices: 1. Apple Tax to increase expense/price 2. Deliberate limitations in the software to separate tablet and laptop markets to boost sales and avoid cannabalization. I'd accept the price of 1 but in combination with 2 it's underhand and dirty whatever anyone says about Apple being a profitable company.

No not for a long time as they want users to both buy an iPad and a MacBook. Then have now enlarged ui items in macOS a lot making them closer in size to iPadOS This to have a visual coherence in both. And adding features that conceptually works for both like stage manager.

We are in an era where even portable and ultra-slim laptops are still quite heavy. People desire even more portability with all-screen tablets that can also function as laptops. For those on the go, a 2-in-1 device is ideal.

  • @Argent_99
    @Argent_9924 күн бұрын

During your presentation, my initial reaction was that a dual boot tablet would be the most logical solution. Given the convergence on the hardware side has already happened, the convergence on the software side isn’t quite there yet and so a proper dual boot would most likely satisfy most folks clamoring for a sort of ‘pro ultra’ (I know, i know…marketing…) device. That said, I feel there is another option kinda out there that really strikes me as the sort of high-concept solution that Apple likes to go for: a dual mode iPad. Basically, make an iPad that if it meets certain situational requirements (I.e. mouse and keyboard are connected) will allow the user to transparently move from ‘iPad’ to ‘iPad pro’ mode, in which one can use macOS apps with their full functionality. This really isn’t as far out as it sounds, because visually the Mac and iPadOS are already near convergence and bringing the app environment for both in sync with one another isn’t exactly something developers will love and enjoy, but it does kinda open up a lot of market exploration, so chances are, they’d go along. The downside here is that Apple would be going from undermining their MacBook sales (which is more or less where we are now) to basically cratering them altogether. Should something like this happen, I suspect the last MacBook models won’t be far behind and this dual mode iPad will be its replacement going forward. Lastly (no brevity here!) I’m not entirely certain that a 16” iPad is the way forward. *maybe* a 15” model has some viability, but a tablet of that size is really unwieldy in a lot of all purpose settings. If you want to whip out a 16” monster on a bus or train to do a little coding or whatnot, I suspect it won’t be a terribly happy experience for yourself and those around you. At 16” it might as well come with a mini VESA mount because you are likely just gonna use it as a screen on your desk…

If you can connect an iPad to a screen it could enter some kind of different mode that would enable these kind of apps and contextual features that you’re talking about. That way it wouldn’t matter about the size of the device, it’s just about connecting it up to a decent enough screen + peripherals- it enables the iPad to become more like a Mac Mini.

This is the debate I’m in with myself right now: buy a new MacBook or iPad Pro with all the accessories? Still not entirely sure which direction to go. I’m rocking a 13” MacBook Pro Retina from 2012 and aside from a one time battery replacement, it’s been a stellar machine. I don’t edit videos often, but when I do I want to be able to do it efficiently. Using my current MacBook, it takes a while for things to render and the MacBook is clearly working hard when I’m using Final Cut Pro. I like the functionality of an iPad and its mobility. Although I’m not an artist, I would 100% get the pen and mess around with different apps using it and try to do art things…for fun. Still not sure which direction I’m gonna go with all this. The last iPad I had was an iPad 2 so it’s come a long way since then.

If buying an iPad, and you're not some creative industry professional (eg artist or video) then buy the bog-standard cheap iPad: It does 90% of what the top iPad does for x4 less the cost. With the free money you can then choose a laptop if you need 2 devices. You'll end up frustrated trying to edit videos anyway on iPad even with top Pro models for most people that holds true due to crappy file-system, lack of multitasking or background process control and external compatibility issues for storage etc. The reason these videos pop up is because Apple is selling top tier hardware with junk software. It's as simple as that.

They could remove the 13" MacBook from the lineup and make it start at 14". I've always thought 13" was too small and eye straining for a laptop in the modern age. Even in the windows market there's a great demand for 14" inch laptops especially for gaming, but I don't think I've seen a 13" windows laptop in years unless they're the really cheap ones that you usually see around offices. That could possibly remove the "blurred" line as smaller devices can function as touch screens while the new baseline of 14" and higher can be used as laptops

You could theoretically have two interfaces in a single integrated OS system, depending on use, sort of like Windows 8 attempted unsuccessfully. So when keyboard is out you get the interface and functionality of touchscreen based Ipad software, but when you plug it in it switches to a full blown iOS. This would requite integrating these into a single OS with the capacity to switch. It might seem cumbersome, but considering the computing power of today's chips, even at this level, it should be manageable.

Apple could 100% do a better job with the desktop features than the current alpha-release state of Stage Manager etc. It's purposeful limitations of course. Even with DeX the file-system of iOS/iPadOS is a problem and background tasks control on memory usage. I think a superior and even easier solution is provision Virtualization (eg Parallels in the App store with sub) for Pro Users then it solves the problem for now and Apple don't waste resources on DeX like that really only Pro users need. Ultimately Apple will launch an entirely new OS on iPads mering iPadOS/MacOS so again they can carry on dev'ing that in a secret underground lab somewhere for the future while Pro users get Virtualization which allows local desktop MacOS/Win/Linux apart from remote desktop over network to home computer or cloud pc.

@@commentarytalk1446 I basically thing exactly the same. I mean it’s been going under the hood for years. Just look the changes inside of ui element in macOS is not happening by chance or what Apple claim is to make it more clear. Tbf macOS has last 10 years mostly got feature tied to mainstream use. And integration and lock in into the Apple ecosystem. Look at a new os release of today. Half what is listed is not about the OS itself but the photo app etc. So Apple plays it smart I must say. Risky but some makes sense. Question is. Will it still be MacBook and iPad as two product lines for ever? Like I mean even today you can use and iPad as an extra display to you MacBook. And use the pen a a cheap Cintiq. But it would be nothing Apple to allow the MacBook to use the M4 chip in an iPad for calculations. Say you work in 3D on your main MacBook and have iPad as extra screen and it also render stuff in the background while you work. Why is Apple not doing this? Well maybe they suspect that many of their pro users also buys an iPad. And if this was possible they would not go for the most high tier MacBook. So yeah they for sure keep hardware features locked and software feature delayed to allow oit this as much as they can.

@RivandaBakhtiar I agree, I want more full applications, too. I use my ipad Pro more than even my MacBook Pro, in all honesty. But it definitely needs more help. In all fairness, Apple had been adding more and more to the ipadOS. But we do still need more and more full apps. But MacOS is a bandaid approach. It's what all the copy cat parrot KZreadrs are repeating after each other. People talk about Samsung DEX like it's a full operating system.. it's not MacOS. It's not Windows.. it's simply Android with a nice interface! Not a duel boot! Android allows Side Loading, that's what helps them out a lot, too. Instead of a massive over haul of MacOS to allow touch controls, change the traffic lights ect, instead, we need that on ipadOS. Give us Sode Loading, give us a Separate UI when we click on ipadOS Stage Manager. So it feels more like a Laptop, when in this "Mode" have some type of background translation software, allow us to use MacOS programs. Ether way, IpadOS is growing but we need the software to grow faster for the Pro specifically. But a Duel boot or MacOS on the ipad is a terrible idea. The reason the ipad can operate so well on such a tiny device, which a battery millimetres thin, is due to heavily optimised programs for the ipad. I want the ipad to get more full products too. But this complete hogwash about MacOS is just grasping at straws. It's not going to happen

The performance of a device liek that wasn't really there yet but: - Having a pen and/or a track pad eliminates most touch-related fuckery with button sizes. - I'll gladly admit that Windows on a rather small screen is clunky, but that easily beats not being able to use real apps. Always. - It does work just fine. All reasons for not running real apps on the iPad at this point are just lame excuses. I'd happily take them loading up looking just as they do on a desktop PC. I desperately want a powerful but light drawing capable PC, and if this thing wasn't nerfed in software, I would have bought one immedeately.

They need to ask the question what do the professionals that need a tablet want from the iPad, like Apple does. I’m sure they want software improvements, but can MacOS fix their software problems? For the professional that needs LiDAR, the Pencil or even a better scanner while in the field, focus their energy on asking for features other than MacOS? I think so.

While I think it's fine for the iPad to be the way it is (you very much can just buy a Surface or Tab instead if you want a tablet-laptop hybrid - loving my Tab S8 Ultra I got last week for $470), I do think the M series iPads are underwhelming for their price. Let's 5 you're a hobbyist or graphic designer/artist. Take a look at the M2 iPad Air 13" and Apple Pencil Pro. $930 for that hardware doesn't seem a bad buy, right? Except the Tab S9+ with S Pen for $900 would give you an OLED screen, 120hz, 256gb storage, 12gb ram, quad speakers, the works - it's essentially an iPad Pro other than the OS and chip. And the M2 chip is way overkill for almost anything the iPad can do, so the premium you pay for the M chip gets you...basically nothing. Or if the iPad Air is fine? Well then the S9 FE+ should have you covered too, for $450. Basically the same specs as the Air other than the chip is weaker. During the time I had an iPad Air and an iPhone, I loved my iPad. Did everything I needed it to with flying colors. My only regret was that I paid too much - a base model iPad and an aftermarket keyboard and stylus for under $400 would have been plenty, and I paid $900.

As you say, improvements have to come from Apple and the app developers at the same time. Apple has finally to deliver a files app which is up to its job and enable a plugin concept for apps. App producers have to deliver apps which make sense and use the plugin functionality. Photoshop without plugins is useless for me, Capture One without session falls into the same category. C1 is certainly not Apples fault, Phase One decided to design the app for the studio as a tethering device. That’s not very helpful for landscape photography. On the other side there are very good apps on the iPad as it is: LumaFusion, Lightroom, DaVinci … If there is an app Apple is responsible for it is Mail, what a disaster. And there is no excuse for this.

Probably one for the most insightful videos on the dilemma facing Apple with their advanced iPad Pro models. However, we also have to acknowledge that some developers don’t feel the need to bring their pro apps to iPadOS for the reasons sited here (multiple interfaces, etc) as well as their core customer base using Macs for their professional needs. However, even the most pro of users would most likely welcome more MacBook-like apps for the iPad Pros. Since Apple will most likely never port MacOS on the iPad Pro, again due to the limited availability of a touch interface vs a mouse/cursor interface, the solution may be to develop a special “kit” that can allow developers to port, say, a “98% version” of their Mac apps into iPadOS. You can even call it a “MacPad kit”, as indicated in this video. It could allow developers to modify their Mac apps within 95% to 98% of those apps regardless of how we interface with them. In fact, I would suggest that Apple can allow developers to use either a Smart Keyboard OR an Apple Pencil to interact with their “MacPad kit-based” apps instead of being touch-based, which has been proven to be limited in some circumstances. This way, Apple can retain the essence of iPadOS while allowing developers to port more robust and “professional” versions of their apps. It’s important that iPadOS remain intact because an overwhelming majority of iPad users do not need “professional levels’ of anything. It’s that very small fraction of users that could benefit from a set-up (a special kit) of allowing more complete and robust version of Mac-like app for their needs. So, like Joshua indicated, Apple will most likely create a more feature-rich version of iPadOS, which will appeal to the masses. But maybe there will be a surprise in there somewhere.

I appreciate what you're saying about owning a device and using it as you wish. That said from the overall ecosystem point of view: I would encourage for security, a Repository approach along with package manager for software or as Apple does turns those into App Stores or walled-gardens. There's definite merit in the Security angle apart from attempting to make this security commercially self-sustaining for devs and for the platform itself be it Apple, MS, Google etc. If someone wants total control, then maybe a Linux machine is better choice but again even there it's recommended to run download via repos for a reason. These days I can't be bothered with all the management of Linux and just want a device that works but I really dislike it when Apple for example deliberately "borks" the software eg virtualization as opposed to provisioning an official source for use which is ticks security and commerce and serves the customer: They're serving themselves which is the real problem here!
