Thank you for this review, I actually went to the Apple store to test the nano texture version and, I was really disappointed because the pencil still slips on the screen and for me there was no difference to the normal screen regarding ease of drawing, I highly recommend testing it at the store before buying and, off course each artist has his own preference, this is just my POV.

I use the Rock Paper Pencil matte screen protector and love it. Never got used to drawing on glass. I have the 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 and would have ordered the new M4 if iPadOS had been upgraded to a MacOS capable iPadOS. I will wait to check out the new Surface Pro 11.

I absolutely love your Apple Pencil grip. I’ve tried other but, your grip is superior. I can charge my Apple Pencil while your grip is on so, I don’t have to take it on and off. Of course, it’s so easy to take on and off. I no longer have pain in my index finger after drawing. Thank you for creating such a thoughtful Apple Pencil grip. I was on the fence with the nanotexture but after comparing them in person, you can easily see how much sharper the display is on the standard glass. The lighter blacks wasnt as much of a factor for me and I did like the texture of the pencil on the nanotexture glass a tad more but the slight fuzziness to the display made the decision very easy for me.

So would you recommend just getting that non textured version? I’m an artist looking to buy one of these but I’ve been having a hard time finding people explain whether or not the nano texture is practical for drawing or not. I’ve heard enough people talk about how it feels nicer to draw on and what not but no one really mentions if it’s actually a useful upgrade in terms of drawing. I assume with the fuzziness you mentioned, I would be sacrificing some clarity and true colors so i think I’ll just get the non textured one lol

@@tailopez7492 So Ive actually changed my stance on this after watching Chris Piascik working with it and reviewing it. Its true that there is slightly better color and sharpness on the standard but the drawing experience is so awful that Im exchanging it for the nano. If you draw on the standard, you will need a screen protector and the nano texture will 100% beat the image quality of the standard with any screen protectors applied. Another huge factor for my decision is the gestures. Gestures on the nano texture is flawless. It responds perfectly every time because its buttery smooth and your fingers never stick or slip unexpectedly. On glass, its unreliable and its especially unpredictable over a screen protector. If drawing is your purpose for buying an ipad, get the nano texture. If its media consumption, get the standard. Ill also add that the difference in sharpness wasnt nearly as bad as I remembered. I actually wonder if there was something wrong with the screen the first time I was examining them. Maybe it was super dirty or something. I dno, but the difference is very small. I also think its logically impossibly to diffuse light and get an image that is perfectly sharp. I think its just the nature of matte. Hope that helps.

@@chrismarano2135 fantastic. thats what i was thinking as well. i wanted to believe that i could just buy a top tier aftermarket screen protector and it would serve just as well as the nano texture because i sort of wanted the flexibility to 'remove' the screen protector if i wanted to view the ipad in the standard glass whenever i can since u obviously cant remove the nano texture haha. for drawing i would 100% believe the drawing experience is far superior on the nano than the standard. i guess my biggest gripe was whether or not the reduction in quality for image clarity and sharpness is enough to warrant just getting the standard one and applying whatever the best screen protector is out there. and i genuinely dont mind a matte screen either since im used to drawing on a wacom. i just wanted to get the full oled experience but i guess we cant have it all lol

@@tailopez7492 Yep, I really wanted the best screen I could get as well. But the only way you can realistically switch back and forth between drawing mode and best viewing mode is if you have a magnetic screen protector, which arent as good as the stick on screen protectors. Id rather just get a 2nd ipad at that point. But the nano texture image quality is VERY good and not far off at all. good luck

Your review is the one I was waiting for. Actual use is important to know. I won’t be upgrading until the next model so I’ve got tons of time to wonder about the nano texture but you’re making it look like a good choice for me, but the cost and the fact you can’t take it off …my work is very detailed and I wonder if the nano would end up bothering me for clarity. So glad to know your grip will work with the new pencil, I bought it just to support you and give something different a try but it instantly became essential to me and I keep recommending it to everyone. Seems just like the Cintiq’s etched glass in feel but with better clarity. I have had that thing for years and tons of working hours and it still looks new. What I am not super excited about is putting the metal Magic Keyboard up to the glass. The gasket around the keys give it a little stand off but what happens when we are putting it in a bag with other stuff? Overall the new iPad is what I have always wanted them to make. Prefer the old Magic Keyboard wish we could still use it.

It’s good to see someone reviewing products who has taken the time to understand why things work and why they don’t, instead of hearing people complain that they don’t understand why Apple just doesn’t have everything compatible. Good review. I ordered the same configuration you did, ten minutes after the store reopened. But it won’t be here until the 23rd to the 31st. The Pencil and Magic Keyboard did arrive so I’ve played with them on my wife’s, who ordered the 512. Pretty impressive as far as it goes. The only thing about the Folio and Magic Keyboard that I don’t like is why Apple couldn’t, or didn’t, want to have them hold the Pencil. When I got the first Pencil what seems to be so long ago now, I took a clip from another pen that slid off and put it on my Pencil so I could keep it in my pocket. It’s as though Apple gave no real thought about this.

Awesome…you’ll have to keep up updated with your thoughts when you get yours! As far as the Pencil goes-I think Apple expected most people would just want to attach the Pencil to the iPad …doesn’t really work for the USB-C option and sometimes it would be nice to have a more secure solution if yours is already charged and you want to throw it in a bag without it getting knocked off!

@@BeeJayDeL exactly! The problem is that while the magnets are strong, they’re not that strong. I’ve got a case for my M2. That I’m using now that has a piece at the top that holds the Pencil against the charging magnets but pulls up to allow the Pencil to come out. But while it’s a nice piece of design, that top part has come off and can’t really be put back though nothing’s broken, just somehow curved over time so it won’t sit securely anymore. Frustrating.

I can see where you're coming from. This video was really fascinating to watch, and I appreciate your honesty because it seems like every KZreadr is constantly praising Paperlike. I've always wondered what other people think. I've never tried Paperlike before, so I need to form my own opinion. But when you said that Paperlike wears down your Apple Pencil quickly, that made a lot of sense to me. It's weird because I've never heard any other content creator mention that or bring it up. Personally, when I went to the Apple store and used the Apple Pencil on the nano-textured display, I thought it was kind of pointless because it seems to mute a lot of the colors and sharpness. However, I wasn't going to use it for drawing. Like I said, everyone praises Paperlike and says it's the best to draw on because it feels like paper, but I can see how some people don't want that texture. I really thought your opinions were incredibly interesting to listen to, and I appreciate your honesty! I'm not going to get the nano-textured display because it seems like it smudges a lot, and that's why Apple includes that cleaning cloth. Let me know if it smudges a lot for you, but that's what I've been hearing people say. Thanks again; I definitely enjoyed this video a lot!

  • @BeeJayDeL

Thanks for the reply! It does smudge…but a lot less than a naked screen (after I took off the screen protector on the previous iPad, it looked like a communal iPad at a McDonald’s playground by the time I was done filming!) That being said, it seems a little more prone to fingerprints than a matte screen protector but no more so than my 24” Wacom. I think a lot of what you see/hear with Paperlike is due to sponsored videos…why not promote something if you are getting paid? Paperlike actually reached out to me some time ago to do sponsored videos, and I didn’t respond…the payday isn’t worth sacrificing my integrity/ the trust I’ve built with the awesome people who tune into my channel! Can’t recommend something I don’t like or wouldn’t use! Hope that helps!

And I was just talking about the Nano that you can't really put a screen protector on the Nano texture or it would really dull out the screen. You can definitely put a screen protector on the normal glass version . You don't have to be worried about the screen being different. All the iPads screens will have the same drawing feeling. It’s properly powerful enough for both Procreate and Nomad Sculpt. I’m going to wait on the next gen like I did with the 5th Gen. I’d have been so upset if I had gotten the M1 and then slapped in the face with the M2 right after. My 2020 was good enough to wait. My 2022 is currently more than good enough to wait. It's important to note that Wacom displays don't scratch because the hardness of the screen is ever so slightly harder than the hardness of the pen nibs. That's why those eventually wear off, even if it takes a while, depending on your model and how hard you press. I assume Apple also made sure that the Apple pencil tip is less hard than the new display. Which is also why you should make sure to only buy licensed Apple pencil nibs. Personally, I'm still using a 2020 iPad Pro (4th Gen) with a Paperlike-esque screen protector and Apple pencil nibs which are made out of metal. These don't wear off over time.

7:53 thanks to clarify that nano texture is better than matte screen protectors. I have been saying this as someone who use both, matte screen protector blurs the image and diffuse/spread the clarity of the screen around. Nano texture does nothing of any of that.

Also, it really would be useful comparing with one (M4) with a quality screen protector. How is the colour reproduction affected? Which one would be recommend to print or digital only? Would an external colour calibrator make any difference or even recommended? Thanks for the review…
