This is the classic Jazza videos I love. No skits, just Jazza trying an art tool he’s never used before, struggling through it and ultimately making something awesome. He’s such a great generalist and it’s these type of videos that inspire you to try new creative tools. I really hope this video performs well so we can see more like this!

I found that most people who found it hard to navigate in the program all said "but it's really affordable" which is a true but a bit unfair given that even the limited tools have little to no explanation. Once you push through the constant frustration you can free your mind experimenting with all sorts of stuff though. :) I guess they couldn't call the tracks layers because in each cell you can have multiple layers. If devs see this by any chance, please give us horizontal flip to check symmetry and lasso tool 😁

I love that Jazza has kinda become one of the go-to art grandpa advisors over the years. I also love the critique of Procreate and how they just don't explain anything. I can't tell you how many times I've had to look up basic things like gradients or how the snap-to function works/shortcuts. They're great for easier-to-access versatile art tools and are beloved for a reason, but there's a lot they just don't make clear. Great if you already know, not too great if you're new to the program.

I think their strongest asset is the flip-book and action mode and if they approached it as layered flip-books; meaning you could apply a mask to a group essentially, then animate that group in real-time... that should be their focus. Even the artists who did inspirational work for the program all eventually did the bulk of their work in flip-book mode. It isn't meant to be an editing software it is meant to be a animation software for digital artists who use traditional methods of art, ya know? Even Procreate is more Fresco than it is Photoshop. They added some editing tools but they shouldn't try and compete with actual editing software. It is like they tried to do both and both suffered for it. Dreams has a really steep learning curve at the moment even with video tutorials. They need to pick a direction and method and stick to it. They also need to integrate more of their original Procreate into it to complete the tech eco-system. You should send them your nit-picks, they are very open to receiving feedback from the public, especially influential professionals such as yourself. Aaron Blaise is one of my favorites, I had no idea he did the Penguin animation.

Now, as an adult, I’ve returned to drawing after a 7-year break due to a career pivot. Today, I started using Procreate to draw and animate my artistic expressions again. It's amazing to see Jazza with 6.5 million subscribers, still motivating me to get started.

I've used Animate, Krita, TVPaint, Maya, Blender and Spine and have dabbled in Harmony, but I just couldn't get myself over the initial hurdle of learning how to used Procreate Dreams. This may be because I don't have as much time to animate now that I'm no longer a student, but I just found that getting started with this app can be very frustrating. I mainly use Dreams for making the animatic and editing, the actual animation is easier to do in Procreate! You can transfer the animation file from Procreate to Procreate Dreams by having the two programs in the same window and just dragging the file to the timeline. Just make sure the projects are in the same framerate so you don't have to do extra work when adjusting the frames!

Excellent animations, Jazza! Hope you do more! 😊 I've tried a handful of other iPad animation apps and always ran into problems of limitations; like limited frame count, some not supporting sound, and no camera features. Once I saw the trailers for Procreate Dreams, I was beyond excited, especially with unlimited amount of brushes, camera functions, sound editing, and some compositing. Not gonna lie, when the reviews came in, I was a bit disappointed. The biggest misses for me was no selection tool and the inability to export a GIF. However, the feeling of Procreate Dreams does feel very organic and smooth, like animating on paper. Luckily the developers of Procreate always listen to feedback and frequently updates the app. So it may not be perfect now, but it could become the best iPad animation app in the future. Could take some time, but I'm looking forward to it!

I love this video so much! I have always very much valued your input on artists tools - my first (and only) tablet was the Huion 950P which you reviewed positively back in the day. I'm not a professional artist by any means, but I started drawing on my iPad using Procreate. I definitely agree that Procreate has a very difficult upfront learning curve, nothing is explained, everything is in swipe features or buried in a menu, but once you get used to it, it really is such a powerful tool. After watching this video, I will consider Dreams if I ever get into animation. I can tell exactly what the pros and cons of the the application are, and I can see how - even as a hobby artist - I could use it for my own projects. I think what I love even more about this video is how much I can enjoy your content again. I can see and feel your workflow, your thought process of going from "Let's start simple with a bouncing ball", to doing research to learn more about the program, then finally how you were able to build into the final project, that's something I can learn from and put towards my own creative process - with your humourous personality to spice up the video. Thank you Jazza.

Really glad to see Jazza try out Dreams! Well put about the bell curve at the end… it takes a bit to learn, but once you get used to it it’s pretty cool! But that’s also when some of the issues become more evident. I’m glad he liked it overall. I personally think the video editing aspect is what excited me about it

Procreate Dreams is like an abusive relationship: I'm so in love with the OG Procreate drawing experience that Dreams seems like a no brainer for me, but it lacks so many basic features you'd expect from other programs. I've done my complaining on their forums enough already, but it's a really conflicting feeling: I'm very particular about my brushes/pressure curves so working in Dreams keeps me from wasting time making things look nice and instead keeps me animating. But so many functions are missing, like looping groups, a more adjustable timeline that doesn't force me into flipbook mode, or adjustable tween curves... I'll proudly still use it, but I often won't recommend others to use it if they aren't as beholden to their brush engines like I am.

The interface frustrates me enough that I dont want to use it at all. Too many things are hidden that should be front and center. Its a shame, because it the performance feature is nice. But the design choices, unfortunately, make this unusable for me.

That's just how Apple does things, and since they're stuck on an Apple platform, Procreate is just following the framework they're given. All of Mac OS X and iOS is confusing and hidden in hundreds of menus. They put all their time into making a pretty UI they forget to make a practical UX. The window management on Mac is probably the worst part. Procreate is dropping the ball just like Apple and most Mac/iOS software does.

Moho is another one to look into. Very much a vector with tweening and bones type thing in the vein of flash/animate but with a few twists. Seems to be a slightly more minor player than toonboom but its had a few major productions done with it, and seems pretty intuitive.
