Domino's pizza story (by MagnatesMedia)... Welcome to the history of the company: Domino's Pizza - in this business documentary we'll go on a journey through the history of Domino's business, from back when it was a single store called Dominick's, to present day where Domino's is a gigantic global brand making billions of dollars. In many ways, the Domino's story is an incredible rags to riches story, as Tom Monaghan had a very rough start in life and had to overcome countless obstacles to build Domino's into such a successful company. However Domino's business has at times been surrounded by controversy - such as their 'deadly delivery driver' problem (as a result of a marketing campaign), the hostage situation as a result of their NOID mascot, and a disastrous viral KZread video that severely hurt Domino's brand & finances. There is definitely a lot to learn from Domino's story, including why Domino's was one of the best investments you could have made in the last decade (as Domino's stock was one of the best performing stocks of the 2010's, bringing investors a staggering return on their investment). If you've ever wanted to know how Domino's started, or why Domino's became successful - sit back and enjoy this MagnatesMedia business documentary about the history of Domino's Pizza (aka the story of how a homeless orphan boy built Domino's).
In this history of Domino's we also answer popular questions like: Why is Domino's called Dominos pizza? Who invented Domino's pizza? What is Domino's Pizza timeline? When did Domino's start? How did Domino's get its name? How did Domino's grow? How did Domino's get started? How did Dominos revolutionize the pizza box? How did Dominos rebrand? How did Domino's improve? How did Domino's become successful? Why did Domino's stock price increase so much? And lots more...

APPARENTLY: Dommick's was in Ann Arbor, the same city you showed on your map., near the University of Michigan. Tom Monaghan worked for Domnick's in Ann Arbor and stole their bar pizza recipe He never had permission to use Dominick's name for his short lived store. Later Tom Monaghan owned the two original stores in Ypsilanti Michigan, which is next to Ann Arbor. The Belnap's owned the three stores as franchises in Ann Arbor as they apparently needed a way to launder their profits from trafficking cocaine. After Tom Monaghan sold Domino's the corporate board learned about the Belnap's other source of income in the early years, how the Ann Street store was apparently used for selling cocaine, how they apparently pressured managers to have sex with them, how the delivery cars of Little Ceasor;s Pizza were repeatedly tampered with etc. The corporation forced the Belnap's to sell their stores back to the company. They even learned how minors like myself were delivering pizzas by car which was completely illegal. My favorite was when their manager learned that I was supporting myself while a senior in high school and depended on the money I made to live on, had been living in a Honda Civic and later an unfinished basement, he started pocketing $20 a night in tips as his "beer tax". When I tried to get a better job I learned from one place I applied to that when they called my work reference that they claimed I totaled one of their brand new Chevy S10 pickups probably while "high on drugs" and that they didn't fire me because I "was living in a junky car so they took pity on me as I obviously needed the money,", I was never "high on drugs" while at work. It was a trashed Chevy Chevette, and it wasn't an accident, but rather that the T handle of the automatic gear selector had broken off and been fixed with part of a pen shoved into it. This "fix:" by the manager put the car pack on the road months before my sleeve got caught on the selector causing the transmission to go into reverse at 40 mph. Rather than fix the transmission the car was scrapped because no garage was willing to "fix a car in that condition", as another employee explained. You also left out the problem of the lack of service to cars & pickup tucks owned by Domino's themselves, as they apparently received oil changes and tires only. This policy caused many of the accidents, for example at the Ypsilanti store I had to drive a Ford Ranger with a seized passenger side brake caliper so that when the brake peddle pressed hard the truck would pull hard to the left. After i quit a driver caused a head on collision as they didn't know that you had to steer the truck to the right while braking. And yes, at both the corporate and Belnap's franchises, WE WERE PRESSURED TO DELIVER QUICKLY NO MATTER HOW. So everyone was driving at 10 to 20 over the speed limit as our manager required. Years later after I quit, I was almost run down while riding my bike by a speeding Dominos truck that was running stop signs in a neighborhood and just a year ago I was almost in a head on collision with one of their drivers my neighborhood. And lastly the reason for the stock increase was that Domino's was considered so toxic that they needed to completely re-brand themselves. As the politics of Mr. Monaghan, the accidents, the abusive work environment, etc. etc. caused the Company to be almost worthless. Still whenever there is a decent pizza delivery competitor, Dominos still loses significant business overnight, even if the competitor charges more...

Three years ago was the last time I bought a pizza. Domino's here Australia I paid double the price for one pizza asking them to double everything on it, hoping I'd actually get some topping on it. It had practically nothing extra and wasn't even good enough to be called a basic pizza. Which I would have been happy with. But no they put nothing on it like always. So I will never buy one from them again. Piss poor company.

It's insane how faith can keep someone going for so long with little results!
$700 in one month in 1960 is a LOT of money. Back then, a nice apartment in a good part of town was $70/mo. The dollar was worth a lot more back then. Weekly salaries for full time work averaged $60 a week. And they owned the restaurant nearly free and clear, with their hires on strict commission. It's about $5,500 in today's money, with little downside. I'd say their luck was turning! Great video.
As a Film & Video alumni from Columbia College Chicago, I commend you on this excellent effort and your great research.
My husband owns an independent pizzeria in metro Detroit, Michigan. This is a HUGE pizza area, what with Dominos, Little Ceasars and Hungry Howies all starting here. My husband had worked at Dominos in the mid to late 80s, during the 30 minute guarantee, and he felt that Dominos was run very efficiently. So much so, we try to run our store with a lot of the same practices that Dominos used while he worked there. I'll admit, living 20 minutes from where Tom Monaghan grew up and eating Domino's pizza while I grew up, I'd never heard his life story before now. He really did overcome a ton of adversity in the first quarter of his life!

I'm someone who ordered pizza since the time of the Noid. I remember Domino's going from decent to avoiding it at all costs because it was crap. I became a pizza hut or little ceasars caller. But then I was travelling and wanted to order a pizza from a hotel. My only choice was domino's. I bit the bullet from lack of options, and was shocked how good it was. Now, in my area, it's better than any other franchises, and cheaper than going grocery shopping!
My mom was a higher up at Domino’s while Dominos was suing Papa Johns for the ad campaign “better ingredients, better pizza”. They claimed papa johns can’t say their ingredients are “better” because thats subjective. My mom had stock in Dominos so she asked her coworkers whether she should sell before the lawsuit was resolved. Dominos workers said there’s no way they’d lose the lawsuit, keep stocks. Dominos lost the lawsuit and their stock plummeted 😂

An interesting thing in my family is that my mom and dad went to the same high school that Tom graduated (last in his class) from, St Thomas, in Ann Arbor. He graduated 5 years before them (they graduated in 1961). What I love is that in the 1961 yearbook, they had 6 senior pictures on each page, and my mom and dad ended up being right across from each other, on the same page. They were not dating back then and their last names were not even alphabetically close. ❤

thank you for this! as a michigander, i've always been proud that we are home to 3 (and soon 4) of the largest pizza chains in the us (can you tell i like pizza?). tom's journey was amazing and you did a fantastic job presenting that! i've been a brand loyalist to domino's for nearly a decade, precisely because of the reasons you present in your final words.

Maybe it's a Midwest thing -and I mean no disrespect, but in my humble opinion chain pizza doesn't even come close to real deal pizzerias. Especially brick-oven pizzerias with thin crust. Mom & Pop pizza joints throughout the Northeast are where it's at.

@cranekraken24 yeah dude, I'm in NJ and I worked in Manhattan and hands down we have the best pizza in the country. I've traveled most of the lower 48 and while chain pizza isn't great, it's usually consistent. I had deep dish in Chicago and it sucked but I think hands down the worst pizza I've ever eaten was in Salt Lake City. It was supposed to be "deep dish" but it was more like bread dough with hunt's ketchup and squares of American cheese. Absolute travesty. At any rate, I believe the secret is the water, same reason that Florida bagel places truck in their own water from the city (NYC)

As counterintuitive as it might seem, I'm so glad this awful situation with Business Casual actually happened, as I may not have found you otherwise, and you've become one of my favorite channels in the matter if a couple weeks. As a small business owner/entrepreneur, these videos have really had an impact on the way I've been thinking about my goals and what's possible. Here's to your much deserved growth! @ToxicAvengerNukeEmAll I tried so many pizza places. Many countries. Many methods. You can divide them by type as they very so much. Domino's is hands down the best chain pizza. If I crave wood oven, I make it myself in my stone oven. If I want a specific style, I drive or fly to Detroit or New York. After many years of eating pizza, at least once a week, I still praise and order domino's. Amazing sauce quality and topping taste. It maybe better quality in Canada though vs other areas.

The thumbnail really scares me and at the same time it looks really cool.
Always interesting to see and hear about the history of the founders of some of people’s favourite food chains. And despite how people think about Domino’s for how much trouble it’s gotten into AND how this channel put a menacing looking pizza on the thumbnail. Domino’s Pizza is still f***ing delicious!

When your company is bought by an investment frim, the first thing they are going to do it cut costs by cutting quality and wages. And when you treat the employees and cooks like that, you get worker that don't just don't care, they actively hate the company they work for and actively try to hurt it. This is true for nearly every major fast food conglomerate.

BRAVO to you, sir, for a SUPERIOR made documentary! I’m an avowed documentary junkie, so you can take my praise to the bank and draw interest on it. I worked for a local domino’s Pizza here in Polk county, Florida from 2021 to 2023 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I left primarily because my poor car couldn’t sustain the mileage abuse, and I needed to keep it on the road for a few more years before I trade up. My time with Domino’s Pizza will always be near and dear in my heart so, many thanks for this most excellently produced documentary. CHEERS and BLESSINGS in CHRIST.

As always, riveting and most objective. Thank you.
The man who invented "The Noid" is now a very successful mural and tower artist. Ironically it started as a mural on the side of a Dominos that Eric had worked at. A friend of mine who is good friends with Eric Henn told me the story of how he was 'born' and changed his life. Its a wild story!
For such a long video, it was so interesting that time went flying watching it. Amazing storytelling on an amazing life story!
You make amazing content, I hope your videos are able to get the same amount of views as before even after the termination!
If you have tasted a real pizza, you walk away from Domino's. Video itself is greatly informative and well done.
I think Domino's is about a 4 out of 10 on my pizza scale, at best. They are much better these days, but back in the day, they were next door to cardboard. Yet, Domino's will always have a warm place in my heart because it was my Friday treat (and Saturday morning breakfast) when I was a starving university student. And, Domino's was the only pizza place that would deliver to a grid coordinate when I was in the Army. We would order a "pizza strike" to a remote road intersection, highway marker, or bridge, and meet the driver (who we always tipped well). Man, I still remember it as the best pizza my buddies and I ever tasted!
Really happy your issues were sorted out :) the content is really good and this story is great!
I think you're spot on when you mentioned technology being one of thier biggest success I've been a huge fan of pizza hut for a long time, but the reason I've been getting dominoes more over the past 5 years is because pizza hut's website and app is absolute garbage, Domino's app and website is easier to use and doesn't have the slow response time of pizza hut
So interesting, Stefan, and what a cool time to be alive! 🎉
Imagine that ... People appreciating honesty from a company.
So basically I want to be like Tom 👍
