THE INSANE STORY OF NINTENDO - At first, Nintendo had nothing to do with video gaming. Its president Hiroshi Yamauchi didn’t even play video games. Instead, Nintendo made hanafuda playing cards which were used to gamble, and their biggest customer was the Yakuza (essentially the Japanese Mafia). So, how did a small family-run card business turn into one of the best-selling gaming companies of all time - responsible for some of the most iconic characters ever created like Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, and so many more? As well as creating countless iconic consoles like the Gameboy, Wii, Switch and NES. It’s time to take a journey through Nintendo’s epic history. We'll not only cover Nintendo's strange origin story and the full Nintendo history, but also the birth of Mario, the Kirby vs King Kong lawsuit, the console wars with Sega, how Nintendo betrayed Sony, and so much more from Nintendo's crazy past. This is the insane story of Nintendo - a MagnatesMedia business documentary.

Sorry for the long wait for this video - it turned into a bigger project than I expected. Hope you enjoy! :) Also… let’s be honest, Facebook groups kinda suck. There is a reason many creators are now building communities on Skool instead. it’s a much better user experience, and much more fun to use. I’m part of a few Skool groups myself and I highly recommend testing it out yourself with the trial. Use my link to get started for FREE: magnates.media/skool

@@killerluuk More like, going into greater details and covering additional exciting history that wasn't touched on here. There was a lot more that could been have said about Nintendo of Americas legal battles for example, Universal wasn't the only corrupt company they took down. Then there's the story of how they acquired the legal rights to Tetris, which basically took them behind the isolationist wall of the Soviet Union and interact with KGB to a degree. Other competitors that had been using Tetris had been doing so without acquiring the legal rights from the creator which created another legal drama. You also have the story of how a guy in Sweden basically helped Nintendo enter Europe by lying about his company being a big distributor (when he was just a small one - it only became big later due to the partnership with Nintendo). This video was honestly just a quick summary of Nintendo history, there's so much more to it.

I find it a little disappointing that you didn't mention the Nintendo DS at all. At one point it was Nintendo's most important portable console as it had one of the first touch screen technologies, and also started the normalization of wireless technology in multi-player gaming. But I guess most people don't think much of it anymore now that everything has both touch and wireless.

Some are worse than others obviously, but Nintendo has given me so many hours of joyful entertainment. I’ll never forget my elementary and middle school years in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. I was the first on the bus in the mornings, and last off after school. You’re looking at about 2.5 extra hours a day just riding the bus. In the 4th grade, I got my first game boy along with Pokémon yellow. I had so much fun and it really made my bus rides enjoyable. Then endless hours on my N64 and then GameCube and then Wii. 20 years later and I’m playing on the switch, which I absolutely love. Thank you for the hours of pure enjoyment, Nintendo!

Convenient, you left out one key fact about Sony in chapter 9 in the betrayal is what that betrayal was discovered only now in recent years. They setup a licensing agreement in the contract to mimic what Nintendo did on the cartridges. Any game made on a CD Sony would get 100% of the profits, but as Nintendo was adamant on producing their own media, basically Nintendo would burn, print, pack, seal, and ship all these disc games out for Sony at their costs and Sony would get all the cash. Nintendo would have been wrecked as it's assumed largely most carts would stop being made due to the cheap media of the disc compared to chips. Nintendo had no course to take other than run to another CD maker or just bail entirely, after philips blew it with their design, they ran. Sony in the end even if it was a few years later still crippled them to take the lead.

Great video, well put together and a nice introduction for people that knew little to nothing about Nintendo's history. There were two inaccuracies I found on my first viewing of the video, Donkey Kong was NOT always called Donkey Kong, he was Monkey Kong and due to an error in translation the name Donkey Kong stuck. Second, though cited as one of many factors in Mario's development, the former landlord was NOT the definitive source for Mario's name. It's worth noting also that Shigeru has cited his childhood of cave exploration as his main inspiration for creating Zelda. I don't think there's much else if anything to point out other than the video would have benefitted from being a tad longer but it was a good video none the less. Thank you.

The last couple of chapters contains quite a bit of revisionism and outright misinformation. The first Xbox was not "hugely popular", it was outsold by the Gamecube. Online multiplayer on the PS2 only required an ethernet adaptor, but no subscription. Online multiplayer on the PS3 was also free of charge, PS+ only became a paywall with the PS4. Until then, only the Xbox and Xbox360 charged people for a recurrent subscription fee for online multiplayer.
