The INSANE Dub Where Pingu Spoke English!
Фильм және анимация
Hey guys, bit of a shorter vid this time, but I needed to talk about it. Someone in the comments mentioned a Korean Dub of Pingu which has all the characters speaking English, BADLY. Honestly one of the funniest things I've seen in a while, so just really wanted to share it with those who were unaware of its existence.

Pingu speaking in full English regardless of speaking Penguinese in the original series is like Tom and Jerry can able to talk in full sentences instead of screams and giggles. That dub is strange but overall interesting nonetheless.

I worked as an actor in a Korean English Instructional Video when I was a kid (for something called "Yoon's Reading Pals" if I remember correctly), and I have to defend the actors in this. The stiff acting is actually intentional. At least in the video I was in, they specifically kept interrupting takes and telling me to slow down and focus on speaking each letter in each word clearly, which really hampers your ability to speak with emotion. Given the limitations imposed by the educational nature of this dub, I'm actually impressed at how well it came out

This situation kinda reminds me of the german version of Oggy and the Cockroaches. When it first aired in germany, they also added dialogue to an otherwise non-speaking cartoon. Except there, it was in the form of a narrator providing fanciful narration that added additional comedy as opposed to awkwardly making silent/unintelligible characters suddenly speak. It worked there, because of that different approach and because it was very well written witty narration, done by the same guy who also wrote the added narration for the german version of the Pink Panther cartoon. Just making silent characters talk doesn't work.

I honestly am not surprised a lot of it was broken English since I don’t know if this was the case but this is my guess: Since English and Korean have different language structures (in Korean, they use subject then object then verb where as us English speakers, we do subject then verb then object) plus unlike English, Korean (similar to Japanese) they have different ways to say certain things so I think what happened was that since Korean and English was so different (structure wise) that’s probably why it sounded so choppy and so many spelling errors
@finland4ever55

@@finland4ever55 I mean I do agree that it’s likely the actors/actresses were either American or Canadian (but I can’t say for certain since I can’t find a source that is creditable that shows who they were) so they could pretty much speak normally but I want to give them a benefit of the doubt where they had to read the stuff on the script even if the English was completely broken.

This is why I always recommend that people study a language's grammar first before learning their words. That's why so many people know how to speak Spanish words, but don't know how to make Spanish sentences. This is also why, here in the Philippines, with our many languages, we can still get the gist of what the other person is saying due to the same grammatical structure.

Erm.. you say this like the two shows come from the same place, but I'm pretty sure that's the wrong Korea.... Like 95% sure. I don't think the N.K government would EVER want thier children to speak english, much less let watch a tv show that teaches it.
1:36 for those who don't know, Arzt is german for doctor.
This is my childhood. I remember watching these exact tapes when I was little. They would sell these types of VHS tapes in unlicensed Korean video stores in LA. They also made “English” dubs of other cartoons that don’t have dialogue like the Czech cartoon “Pat and Mat”. Ngl, the fact the original Pingu didn’t have any actual dialogue always bothered me when I was little. So when I first saw these dubs, I was very satisfied. They also dubbed Pingu with actual Korean, which was much more higher quality as far as I remember.
"Pingu, let's play with me." That really made me laugh, because I have a sick, adult mind.
This is perfect timing. I’ve been watching “Steve Reviews” for the last hour and was trying to figure out which video to watch next when this video popped up on my subscription feed.

7:33 They probably didn't know what kind of fish the right-most one was supposed to be, although the other three are obvious; a lobster (which is a crustacean, not a fish), a flounder and an eel. It makes sense why Thomas has a US dub (and rightfully so), but with Pingu, giving Pingu the dubbing treatment of straying away from the fictional Penguinese language to an existent language takes away the charm from the original dub. Not to mention, the voice directing is terrible, the voice acting is terrible, some of the voices sound painfully bad like Robby's voice, and the line delivery is completely broken.
